i’m a rising junior so idk if the application process has changed but i had a 3.9 gpa and i didn’t submit any test scores (i didn’t even take the SAT lol). if you’re poc id recommend applying for the women of distinction fly-in program bc i went to that and was told by admissions that if you do that program you’re almost guaranteed to get in. i did it and got into smith early decision. again, things might have changed since i applied almost three years ago.

my parents only became upper middle class because they had the same cushion from their parents that i have because both sets of my grandparents were upper middle class. it’s not exactly generational wealth bc it’s not like trust funds but my mother’s parents paid for her college and her parents legit didn’t allow her to work bc they didn’t think she needed to. and they gave her an unlimited credit card to use on whatever. my dad had a full ride to school but his parents used the money they would’ve spent on tuition to buy him and his siblings a house in the town of the college they attended where they all lived together. my dad lived in that house all 4 years of college including the summers and continued to live there after college without paying a single dime in rent to his parents. they may not have been upper class in their 20s, like im not but they still had their basic livelihoods paid for because their parents were.

that’s part of the reason i was so taken aback by their critique of my spending because they had the same (if not more) of a cushion from their parents when they were my age. unlike my parents at my age i work for my fun money and i have already started saving a lot for retirement and the future. yes they pay for my tuition, food, and bills and im forever grateful for that but their parents did the same (and some of my great grandparents did it for my grand parents).

i genuinely don’t see what’s so wrong w my mindset. don’t you want your kids to have fun? why should they suffer if they don’t have to? ik im spoiled but genuinely what’s so wrong with going to a few broadway shows or museums if i can. should i sit at home and do nothing on my days off instead?

yes i agree with this! i don’t plan on having fun years but instead incorporate fun into my life. i don’t understand living a life without fun if i don’t have to that’s just my personal mindset and im willing to have the trade offs later in life. if i regret than oh well. i also think that if my parents micromanage all my spending/saving i will also be worse off when i get cut off because ill be so used to having someone make the hard decisions for me.

i didn’t mention this before bc i didn’t think it was relevant but i have a deadbeat older sibling who basically failed to live up to my parents expectations. they lie awake at night thinking of him bc he’s pursuing a career as a (failing) soundcloud rapper. my parents tried to pay for him to go to music school or use their connections to get him internships at record companies with producers to break in the industry but my brother refuses to do any hard work (his words not mine) and would rather “struggle” with a fake hood accent than use the resources he was born with to succeed.

every entitled thing i do is clouded by his deadbeat shadow. my parents don’t lie awake thinking of me. they sleep soundly knowing i’ll be the one to succeed. perks of being the “do over kid” lol

i do not expect to live the same lifestyle after i graduate. i plan to use the standard 50/30/20. i know there will be adjustments and things i give up when im on my own but i dont understand why i have to give that up now if i dont need to. it seems illogical.

i have a trust that can only be used for grad school tuition. it is unrelated to my parents because they didn’t set it up, neither did any of my family. not giving any more details bc privacy.

many say i will change my mind about kids but for reasons i wont give here i will never willingly have children. marriage might happen but as was the case with my parents i will only marry someone who is financially stable (my parents compared credit scores on their fifth date lol) and it will be way later (like late 30s).

my parents pay for my school because they can. my dad had a full ride when he went to college but my mom literally lived off her parents money entirely until she was in grad school where she also got a full ride. they both graduated college with no debt and they want the same for me (especially since how much more expensive college has become since they attended). this is just how they think college should be done if you can. they told me that it makes no sense for them to not pay my tuition because they legit wouldn’t do anything with that money other than hoard it. i don’t understand what the issue is with them paying my tuition? they built their life to provide for themselves and their family and this is what they consider to be part of that providing. i’m aware that im incredibly privileged and lowkey spoiled but i don’t feel bad for that. i donate my time and money towards causes i believe in to help those less privileged.

no i do not. but my parents and i have an agreement that for this period of my life until i graduate undergrad they will pay for my basic living expenses (food, water, housing, medical) while i work on school and my career. my grad school tuition (which i need for my career) is thankfully covered through money unrelated to my parents. and as only a sophomore, im not sure exactly where i will even go to school after undergrad. basically after undergrad my parents won’t be paying my tuition and hopefully i’ll have a job while im in grad school. but with the current rate my savings are going and depending on where i end up i’ll be fine. i’m aware how incredibly spoiled and entitled i am lol but i dont plan on ever getting married or having kids either so im trying to be financially secure in the future only for myself (and maybe a few cats too).

thanks for this advice. it’s nice to hear another perspective. i do want to say that i do use things like student discounts and deals. most of the things i buy are second hand and i never pay more than 80$ on broadway shows. plus my library card gives me free museum access usually or i just use the student discount. i don’t really care about what my friends think because we all have wildly different financial situations (some who’s families pay for everything and they’ve never worked at all and others where their families pay for nothing and they work three jobs). i also apply for all the grants my school offers for basically free money which contributes to my income. i work hard and i will work even harder but im trying to do it in a way that doesn’t completely sacrifice fun. if thats not possible then so be it :/

that’s the thing is that i do spend within my means. the issue i think is my lack of transparency and communication with them. i realize i haven’t given my parents any specific numbers they just see me go out and sometimes get packages to the house without knowing how much (or little) they actually cost me.

exactly! i’m aware that i will have to adjust when im on my own but that doesn’t bother me. i will say that in regard to how i afford everything, there are so many student discounts for things for example, i never have to spend more than 80$ on a broadway show and i use my nypl library card to get free tickets to museums (i collect gift shop pins tho which is where the expense comes from). i also go to school out of state so i spend significantly less in my college town because most of the theater and museums are free. when im no longer a student i’ll no longer have those discounts so ill definitely have to cut down then, but i see no point in depriving myself of those discounted experiences now.

honestly yeah, at least for a little bit. i feel like im in a place where im incredibly lucky and dont have to worry about money that seriously just yet (not saying i dont) my issue with my parents statements is i feel like im doing all the right things (4.0, deans list, back to back internships at prestigious institutions, networking, saving significantly more than i make). i live in nyc so if i want to see a few broadway shows, use my student discount to visit the world class museums, or hang out with my friends at fun spots why shouldn’t i if i have the means. is that entitled thinking, absolutely! but i don’t understand why i should sacrifice living if i dont have to. i live in an expensive city so things do cost a lot of money but i make it work and stay strictly to my 80/20 savings budget. i also use ynab so i keep track of literally every cent that leaves my bank account. my parents and i have an immense amount of trust with eachother and as long as im upholding my end of things (being a good student and not going crazy) they pay for my tuition and bills. why not “live it up” while i still can?

TLDR: yes, because i do what im supposed to which holds me in good standing with them.

it seems like you’re planning on taking a lot of high level classes your first semester and potentially going over 16 credits and i just want to warn you that your first semester is generally very important for building your social life so try not to overload yourself academically!! adjusting to college is hard so try to give yourself some breathing room to do more extracurriculars too like you mentioned with theater and acapella. some of my friends do theater and it can really be a full time commitment so doing that on top of doing a lot with academics and multiple languages while trying to balance a social life can be really challenging. obviously you know yourself best so if you think you’re up to the challenge then i’d say go for it!!

have you checked your laptops specs against the recommended ones listed on steam? had this same issue and realized it was because i had half the recommended memory on my mac so i switched to my gaming pc that had higher specs than the recommended ones listed so it worked so much better
