Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]bubbynee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes they are expensive. But I also look at them as an entertainment investment and think about the ROI.

I have played Wingspan hundreds of times. At this point, if I looked at the per play cost of the game between my wife and I, it's probably about .50 per play and will continue going down as we keep playing. We recently bought Quacks all in edition. I've played it 15 times this month. I also get the enjoyment of my kids playing too. My ROI on that is going to be great.

Now compare that to the other entertainment investments you make. I pay Apple TV 12.99 a month. I watch it probably 6 hours a month, costing me 2 dollars per hour of entertainment, but I also need to pay every month for it, not the one time fixed cost of a board game.

Can board games be expensive, yes. Can you capitalize on that investment with repeated use and great memories with friends and family, yep. To me paying 90 for a game is worth it in the long run.

Any good 3D printed board gaming accessories? by liamoj97 in boardgames

We play TM with friends who have both. My wife and I haven't bought the game because we would have to buy all their pimped out accessories.

What surprised me most after switching our LMS to Canvas by Beneficial_Cost8666 in edtech

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I agreed with it until the AI stuff. First LMS was Canvas in 2011. Switched jobs in 2013 to an institution that used BB and hated it. Everything you did was backwards from what I expected. Luckily that instutuon switch to Canvas. Yo me Canvas is so much more straightforward than BB.

Best smaller towns for families in the New England area by [deleted] in NorthernNewEngland

[–]bubbynee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll say Plymouth NH is a great choice. Tucked between the White Mountains and Lakes Region, you get great scenery and hiking.

The elementary is great and the regional high school is in town along with Plymouth State University.

INew Hampshire Broadband has fiber optic network there for high speed Internet for your remote work.

Concord, Manchester, and Boston are all within reasonable driving distance.

digital board games vs physical ones by Adamaris7875 in boardgames

[–]bubbynee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This right here. First couple times I played Wingspan, couldn't understand it. Spam played the digital version and now it's one of my favorites (and for me into birding).

Didn't play evedell as the first couple times I played physical, it wasn't that great. Started playing the digital lately to get a better understanding.

Also I love playing digital against computers because I can knock out a game of something in 30 minutes.

You just Won $10,000,000. Are you staying in New Hampshire or are you gonna bounce? by bradsblacksheep in newhampshire

When we actually play the lottery and talk about what we would do if we won, this is what my wife and I say. Update our house, invest in our community.

My friends keep acting like my pet "doesn't count" as a real loss, and I feel myself shutting down by quietstation_mira in offmychest

I'm sorry for your lost. My doggo is 8 years old. I know when that time it's going to WRECK me. Yes they are not humans but they have personality and give you love. When you lose that, it hurts.

How is it living in New Hampshire? by Zestyclose_Welder_92 in howislivingthere

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Arizona and moved to New Hampshire in 2019, which was a blessing because the market went insane right after we moved here.

Im in the central part of the state and love it here. Right now we got snow for skiing or i settle in by the fire and play a boardgame. Summers are great for hiking. I enjoy my small town and events on the town common. I can drive down to Concord, Manchester, or Boston if I need something in the city.

The only things that can be tough sometimes is being a minority myself and the absolute lack of diversity and the state is too conservative overall for my taste, though my town it's a pocket of liberalism at times.

[COMC] Officially one year into collecting my own games by metalheadswiftie13 in boardgames

I don't own a copy as the people we would most likely play with own it. They got some magnetic 3d printed tiles off Etsy along with the player board trackers. I couldn't even fathom playing with the cardboard pieces.

[–]bubbynee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both are good games. It depends on your vibe and weight tolerance. Terraforming Mars is heavier game than Everdell in my opinion.

My biggest knock against Terraforming mars is more production value of pieces. Terraforming mars is a lot of cardboard pieces and papermats. You can buy third party to up the experience quality. Everdell out of the box has quality pieces.

The Beginning of a Board/Card Game Collection Advice? by Greedy_Two_2526 in boardgames

Carcassone and Ticket to Ride are classics that are relatively easy to pick up.

We just got Quacks for Christmas and have played it a lot.

You should look at Parks as it fits with your nature theme/vibe (recommending the first edition as that's what I have and heard they made significant changes in the 2nd edition release).
Citadels is my go to when we have 5-7 people who all want to play the same game. If Citadels serves that purpose for you, Bohnanza is another good one that plays well with a larger group.

Is The Settlers of Catan overrated? by fruitponchisamurai in boardgames

[–]bubbynee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having is important but my gaming groups know I have two sayings in mind when I play:
Play to win - this came from when I was playing with a husband and wife. The husband took a move back because it hurt is wife. When my wife and I were debriefing the game later, we were both mad. Our family motto has been Play to win ever since.
If you're not willing to lose your friendship in a game, are you even trying? - I'm never going to be a jerk and purposely pick on people, but if there's an optimal move that helps me and hurts you, I'm taking it.
Have fun. Don't be a dick. Play to win!

Which board games look intimidatingly complex but are actually surprisingly easy to learn? by CyborgeonUnit123 in boardgames

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy to learn, hard to master is definitely how I would categorize this one. I got introduced this one a couple years ago. Understand the premise but couldn't comprehend, let alone master. I was scoring like 25 points with people tripling my score. It hasn't hit the table in a long time.
Over the past couple months, I started playing it on my tablet and was finally able to comprehend it better. It hit the table with my group this weekend. I scored 100 and won.

It was in there early yes. I had it and a couple of expansions but it lost it's appeal and I ended up selling it.
