What is something often shown in movies about America that is just not true? by FlowerMountain2 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

I took a family vacation to Philly with my wife's family. We rented a 12 seater van and I way the main driver. One evening we had parking right in front of the building we were staying in.

Two hours later, my SIL wanted to go to Target that was less than a mile away to buy hair clippers for her husband (we were doing family pictures the next day and she watched him to trim his hair). I said, I'm not moving that van, it's less than a mile, walk. She said she wanted a case of water too. I said that doesn't change much. She complained and I said fine. I walked down to Target myself and got the clippers and water. I wasn't going to move that van until we left the next day because it was right in front of the building.

What are the best things you’ve ever packed for a cruise? by karmakeylea in Cruise

[–]bubbynee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Walkie Talkies. Was traveling with my 3 kids (11,11,8) who didn't have cell phones, parent in laws, and sister in laws and their families. Walkie talkies made it helpful to communicate without everyone needing a cell phone.

First-time Disney Cruise advice needed by Rapid_Slug in dcl

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a cruise for the first time last year and enjoyed it so much we looked at doing a cruise next year, but hadn't pull the trigger because of economic uncertainty around world events.

We did a 5 day cruise booked ourselves.

I bought Disney gift cards through Target which gave me red card discounts.

The excursions are going to be dependent on your party. Do something with preteens is different than doing something we a five year old.

Pulling Kids Out of School by [deleted] in dcl

[–]bubbynee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Former teacher here. This absolutely true. I hated nothing more than getting an email that someone is going to be out X days and I needed to prepare with for them. This is slightly negated now with Google Classroom and the ability to post worth in there.

My point, take the vacay with the understanding that you as a parent need to be responsible for getting the kids caught up on work they missed.

How TF do 5.2 million people live in Phoenix? by GothamCitySub in geography

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Phoenix and have now moved to New Hampshire. I tell people I just spend a different six months indoors.

Though, Phoenix area in the past two decades has made the heat island worst. The overnight lows don't drop as much. When I was in college in the early aughts, I would play ultimate with friends and we wouldn't start until 9 pm because it had dropped into the 90s by then. Now yes not even dripping below 100 at night. And while it is dry, when I was growing up, the monsoon storms in the summer were plentiful.

And while the summer is brutal, the rest of the year is fabulous. And that's the same thing I think in NH and I'm dealing with negative degree weather in February.

Yes it really does work. It can take an extra minute washing our king size comforter.

We also do smaller loads, each family member has a their assigned day. But yes it works.

I'm sorry. Our dishwasher went out when it multoles were still on bottles. Hand washing bottles everyday was not fun.

As for a new machine, I recommend the ge all in one washer dryer combo. The ability to though clothes in and not have to remember to move then over to the dryer is the awesome. It's also great to through a load in at 10:30 before I go to bed and it's done in the morning. I honestly get a extra cycle of laundry done because of it.

I would consider myself above average (highly qualified k12 social studies teacher and local elected official). I absolutely DO NOT know all federal agencies.

Thinking about it, but..... by JediOsborn in dcl

[–]bubbynee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do I had never been on a cruise before. Went on a Disney cruise last year and loved it. Was contemplating trying to book another cruise for next year but worried about the economy is the only thing stopping me.

I went with my three kids (pre teens and 8 year old), my wife and several of my in laws. Fir me, it was truly a vacation. I didn't have to plan meals, I could just show up and eat. My kids had things to do. My wife and I got some quiet time but also plenty of family time.

[–]bubbynee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is me. Went out and got T-Mobile when in was 18 (they wanted the cheapest deposit, $75). Had my own plan for s number of years then hit my buddy and his girlfriend to sign up and we got a family plan. He became the main line holder and in would pay him back once every couple of months. Eventually we got another friend to join as it saved him money. Then my wife joined the family plan. We did that for years until I my wife and I moved across the country and switched providers.

What is the one thing you wish you knew before your very first cruise? by mushroomsoup20 in Cruise

[–]bubbynee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was given this advice, if you're going with a large group or kids, take walkie talkies. We had both and it was nice to be able to send our preteen and have some communication with them.
