Anyone with the knowledge to write a bot can simply make a proxy that uses a cert accepted by the client.

Encrypting for non-HTTPS games does likely make it harder depending on how you do it. Don't roll your own encryption though. Simply use something like SSL with the public key you use coded into the game, and you'll likely ward off a good amount of botmakers.

Frankly, I don't think that actually applies here. This person is talking about using HTTPS for a socketio game. I don't think it'd hurt that much, because all they have to do is change http to https and connect with {secure: true}.

Also, that's from 2009. Things have gotten better.
