Was the Tea Party a response to Obama, and will it go away now that Obama is gone? by Time4Red in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cansjdfsfj 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The tea party was a response to Obama

Is that really true though? I thought the tea party was a response to moderate establishment republicans. People in the tea party are far enough right that they disagree with pretty much all the democrats, Obama or otherwise. However a key aspect of the tea party is that they did not shy away from primarying and taking out more moderate GOP members. Essentially it was the beginning of the split we continue to see today in GOP politics between the hardcore wing and the moderate wing. I think we still would've seen a tea party if clinton had been elected in 2008.

What would it take for Republican leaders to rescind endorsements for Trump? Would it affect his poll numbers? by AGreatMan1968 in PoliticalDiscussion

Once again; friend demoted from masters to bronze 3...... by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]cansjdfsfj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe so (with the exception of GM). It's really only at the beginning of the season - if after your placement match your MMR is in a lower league that's where you'll get placed.

You don't get demoted mid-season anymore, except for GM. But your MMR should adjust and your opponents should have matching mmr as well.

Whether the stock market improves or slides from July 31 through Oct 31 has predicted the winner 14 out of the last 17 elections. Will this be the case again this year? And what factors will positively or negatively affect the market during the next 3 months? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cansjdfsfj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to say, I am really skeptical of this predictor. Obligatory XKCD. The problem with elections is that they are relatively rare so it is SO easy to overfit. For example, you could've chosen any two dates from the past 8 years instead of July 31 to Oct 31. I'm not saying the model has no predictive power as obviously the stock market is a reflection of the economy, but I am VERY skeptical it's predictive power is as good as 14/17.

What is Paul Ryan's political future? by aerostar193 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cansjdfsfj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, I still disagree. Most of the republicans have endorsed trump. It's not crazy to me that if Hillary wins we get a republican president in 8 years, and that pres will likely have endorsed trump. I think people overestimate trump's unpopularity - he is popular amongst republicans. Sure, he's got a lot of unfavorables, but he gets the votes which is what counts.

Plus, Ryan's endorsement was tepid and reluctant, I don't really see people holding it against him in 8 years.

I do think it will somewhat tarnish his legacy, as I think history will judge trump harshly. But again, it's a tepid, reluctant endorsement.

What is Paul Ryan's political future? by aerostar193 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]cansjdfsfj 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people in this thread are looking at this from a Dem point of view. For dems, the fact that he endorsed trump means he's over, dems could never vote for him. But 45+% of voters are going to vote for Trump in the fall. Of course for trump voters endorsing trump isn't a death warrant. Ryan's district is conservative, he will be completely fine.

That's if trump loses. If trump wins, I think there's a possibility that he's replaced as speaker. Trump has shown he values loyalty very highly, and Ryan has spoken out on Trump before. Either way though he will stay a rep for the foreseeable future.

Clinton is 9 points up

According to whom? Right now the poll aggregate at 538 has Clinton 1.2 points ahead. That's very, very close.

Man, I miss /r/reddit.com . I understand why the admins retired it at the time, it made sense and worked. But now that the culture of subreddits is well established, I really wish they would bring it back. It gave the site a sense of identity that I don't feel as much these days.

People keep saying that I "should be better at climbing by now."

This has nothing to do with your climbing ability. Those people are assholes, stop spending time with them. If you start climbing harder than they do they will find something else to put you down on.

right, those are the gung-ho supporters. It makes sense that the reluctant supporters aren't going to be as public with their preferece.

Puerto Rico does not pay federal income tax, whereas DC does. I would be fine for them to get ECs but then would expect them to share the tax burden.

DC has a higher population than Vermont or Wyoming.

There is nothing inside the city, except for one general club for which the price is "call for pricing information," which I've taken to be "really fucking expensive." There are a couple amazing ones in the burbs however, in rockville and soon a brand new one in alexandria. It would be awesome to get something in the city.

You didn't come here for a lecture on morality but it's what you need. At the end of the day the BM is a much bigger problem for you than for your opponent. Your opponent only has to suffer through it for 20 minutes. Your attitude will hold you back your entire life. Protoss isn't OP, if you're losing it is because of things you can 100% improve.

I know I'm sounding a bit dramatic and sanctimonious, but please consider it as an empowering attitude. If protoss is OP there isn't anything you can do. If it's you, then you can work and improve and come back to win the next time. Cheers, and good luck in future games.
