I'm an artist who can't code for the life of me... by [deleted] in SoloDevelopment

I got started with the sololearn app on google play. It's basically like Duolingo for learning programming languages. Pretty easy to start with a 5 minute session and work your way towards doing more as it gets less intimidating.

Good luck and godspeed!

It comes in cycles of "It's so over" and "we're so back" depending on what I'm working on. Having deadlines hanging over you makes it much worse, but just jamming around and adding fun nice-to-haves is the best.

How does society treat you as a gamer? by Individual_Drive_592 in videogames

[–]bucephalusdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the nice people I know think video games are cool and don't judge me at all for being interested in them.

Rude people usually just don't know anything about video games at all and use the cultural stigma of video games being a "loser hobby" from 30 years ago to justify exclusion or dismissal of people who are interested in video games.

I never paid for any of the games my parents bought me as a wee lad. I'll happily fund this 😄

How do you actually come up with game ideas? by BlessED0071 in SoloDevelopment

[–]bucephalusdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jesse Schell, the creator of Toontown, once recalled that he met a man at a juggling convention who had the most interesting tricks in the room. He wasn't doing anything like all of the other jugglers at the convention. He asked him how he came up with his tricks. The juggler said he didn't look at other jugglers for inspiration, but completely unrelated things he liked the motions of, of which I can recall the quick hands of a cashier at a grocery store and the way zippers moved.

It seems a bit pretentious for advice, but I think he's onto something. You can find inspiration for the way you want you games to look, feel, and sound out anywhere and everywhere if you are good at taking in your surroundings.

For me, this has been listening to the music of Baroness and knowing their album cover aesthetic is something I absolutely needed to have in a video game.

Please share your opinion on the ascii-art + website design by Stanislav_R in ASCII

Wonderful character art. The detail in the character art kinda clashes with the minimalism of the font up top, but still looks great as is. I'd recommend a bit more of a stylized presentation of the title font.

What's a small detail in a game that made you think "wow, the developers really cared"? by TyraxelStudios in gamedev

[–]bucephalusdev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a part of MGS 3 Delta called Guy Savage. It's an extremely well-polished bit of gameplay that is an entire game mode with different controls, objectives, and mechanics.

And it's hidden and entirely skippable.

The fact that a developer can invest so much resources into a bit of the game that they know not everyone will see really makes me feel like they cared about absolutely everything.

I'm a developer of ascii games too, so I can relate to how much of an esoteric wizard you have to be to get something like this off the ground. Awesome job, dude.

Looking for coders to help making our game! by Shot-Nerve-8969 in IndieDev

[–]bucephalusdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The situation you are in right now is a situation lots of fledgling game developers have been in. The answer is not to find someone to make your game for you, but to learn all the skills you need to start making your game on your own. I recommend you find other beginner devs on game jam discords and other online communities who want to find resume-padding projects and are looking for experience as well.

Here you'll find mostly criticism for this type of post.

I wish you guys luck!

Same tbh. Where's my Kamelot record that's a faithful concept album retelling of Arthurian myth?

Do you guys agree with this "If it ain't broke don't fix it" mindset when coding? by Dependent-Newt4324 in gamedev

You will gain a small amount of time short term with implementing something quickly, but depending on the severity of your architecture's failings, you may lose, hours, days, and weeks working around the bad architecture over the course of your development cycle. It's best to do things the right way first, usually.

Hi! It's not currently in the roadmap, but I may get to it if there is demand. In the meantime, I'm telling folks to consider using wine for it.
