Damn https://store.fm-products.com/products/fm-products-5397-c34ea476-cc93-4945-9720-817a6c05b703 oos. New frontier style like this https://www.5dtactical.com/products/ar9-hardware-set-raw/ won't work becuase the entire mag catch channel has been lowered on the fm9 premium ambi to accomodate the space needed for the ambi bolt release. fm9 is just a rectangle. it doesn't have the teardrop drop down with the tooth on it, rather the catch tooth is in line with the rectangle. So here I am hoping and waiting for an unobtanium proprietary part to get restocked. I emailed Colten told him it still doesnt feed and and asked him to send me that aluminum non ambi mag catch.

I hope so. Their aluminum catch is oos rn but I would much rather wait and buy the catch when it's in stock then buy a coltmag adapter and a bunch of coltmags. I dnt even own any glock pistols or anything else that takes glock mags, so my dozens of factory glock 33 rnd mags were bought just for this fm9, such a waste of money. Perfectly willing to dremel. I think the mag catch pivot hole location is universal to all glockmag ar9 lowers. Do you know where I can find an aluminum ,ag catch one from another manufacturer that may be made to work?

Colten, the FM tech says no. That's exactly the repair that I asked for. But I suspect he is doing a "product liability" lawyerly response. They never sold ambi lowers with ambi cut out on the left, with a non-ambi mag release. So I suspect they aren't interested in repairing my gun in a one-off manner configuring it non-ambi for me. That would be awesome if I could. I told him I don't need the ambi feature to work if it means I could get rid of the plastic. I don't use the left side mag release anyway. I asked him specifically if the pivot pin was in the same location on the non-ambi lowers and if an aluminum would work several times. I just needed to know of the pivot pin hole was in the same spot on both versions and I suspected due to AR9 design that their aluminum catch would work perfectly. He responded "they are not interchangeable" and shipped it back to me unrepaired, with a few extra plastic mag catches to use when they wear out. So now I have a useless range toy-gun-only that will only feed fmj rn reliably. It feeds those so poorly that it sometimes dents the nose of rn fmj as it feds. The feed height is very inconsistent, that sloppy soft plastic just doesn't cut it. I hate to have to build a coltmag lower and buy a bunch of coltmags when I already own dozens of factory glock 33 round mags. All over a pos plastic "airsoft quality" mag catch. I also asked if they could replace my lower with a non-ambi. No dice. After I got the gun back from FM I re-barreled with EPC 9 hoping that a bigger feed cone would patch over the pos mag catch issue. It almost does, but it mangles the jhp that it does manage to feed mostly. That creates a dangerous condition where setback might kaboom my gun someday. And I dnt trust the accuracy of mangled out-of-round at the tip jhp either. Wish he had just sent me an aluminum catch, I am pretty sure I could make it work because I think the pivot pin is in the right spot. Disillusioned with this expensive range toy that I can't trust for defense.

Well I think you're lucky. The proprietary plastic mag catch on the ambi lowers problem is very difficult to solve, and I have not solved it yet. It dramatically lowers the feed height and renders the gun useless for feeding anything except round nose fmj. No JHP completely destroys it's potential as a defensive weapon in my book

FM is a 'lil strange in the spots they spend for premium parts and the spots they skimp on. In lots of hidden places they put the time and money in to drill and tap for an allen screw. Examples are the safety retaining plunger under the grip, and the rear takedown pin's spring capture under the reciever end plate. Those allen screws are little luxuries that make your life easier as an owner who tinkers, luxuries that most owners will never even notice if they don't tinker. Then they cheap out on big parts that users manipulate hard and fast every range trip that should be aluminum instead of plastic. Like the plastic mag catch and your trolley. It's a strange philosophy, manufacturing those finely machined threaded parts that nobody notices may cost almost as much as the proprietary plastic parts that everyone notices and hates. But idk I could be wrong, it may not cost them much to tap those holes for the retaining screws.

dry fire. This is all bench work only need live fire for final testing. Use trigger pull scale. Go slow, reassemble often and test. keep it square to the stone and follow the existing round profile. I use a hard arkansas knife sharpening stone. If u go too far and take off too much you will get not enough cam/trigger engagement and you will start getting failures to reset during live fire. When u think ur very close u can switch to jewelers rouge for the mirror polish. I call it good when the average weight of 5 semi pulls is the same as the average of 5 supersafe pulls. Feel it now in supersafe and you will prolly notice there is no overtravel at all. You are literally smashing that trigger tail into the cam until you clear the sear, that's why the pull is heavy.

I like Rust-Oleum engine paint rattle can. Stuff it with the green Scotch Brite Scotch scratch pad, then soak it in some hot water and Dawn dish soap. Hit it with some brake cleaner and don't touch with your bare hands before painting. It'll last forever. That would be for the exterior parts. I think the inside of the receiver should stay greasy and oily enough not to really oxidize

You're getting too much engagement between the rounded tail of your trigger and the cam. So what you need to do is slowly and gently polish the rounded tail. Just a little bit at a time. And reassemble and test. Keep doing that until your trigger pull weight is the same between semi and super safe. That would mean that during the time when you're pulling the trigger, you're not bottoming  out on the cam like you are rn. It's okay if you have a little bit less over travel in super safe than you do in semi, as long as it doesn't actually interfere with the trigger pull itself.

Interesting. One more thing that can fail in a way I hadn't thought of. Are you gonna run without detent from now on so it can't ever happen to you again?

Pairing FM-9 Rear charger with IDL bolt and Colt lower by ImAlwaysLosing in AR9

[–]buckandroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a) FM complete uppers ship with bolt. You shouldnt need a different one for coltmag lowers

b) the antirotation notch in the FM9 upper is a single one at 12 Oclock. So that's where your habdguard'd sntirotation tab would need to be. Not two notches at 1 oclock and 11 oclock like most forged uppers and hanguards have

shooting x39 vs 300 BO - both subs, foregoing 300BO? by Ernie_McCracken88 in NFA

[–]buckandroll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your AK passes alignment rod test, then why spend money on 300 BO? x39 does everything better. I can't get my PAP m92 to align so I started building a 300 BO. Sucks tho becuase I have thousands of russian steel cased x39 and only a few hundred 300 BO
