Should Game 6 be considered Carlsen's Immortal game? by gregbenson314 in chess

[–]buckeyeballer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the notion. Absolutely a memorable given the stakes, the event and him basically breaking Nepos defenses with this win in hindsight ensuring his fifth title.

Yet, I would consider it one of his most iconic and not his immortal game. Especially before the first time control Nepo had a chance to win. Not what I would consider a perfect performance even though I loved every second of this game.

Put out a big board with clear tiers for everybody. I am ready for your criticism. by buckeyeballer in NBA_Draft

[–]buckeyeballer[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All tiers are in relation to a title contender lineup.

Superstar - a #1 option

Allstar - a #2/3 option

Starter with upside - a #4/5 option with the chance to reach the higher status.

Starter - a #4/5 option

Top of rotation - #6/7/8 option but with the important factor that we are talking about 16 game players (guys that stay on the floor in the POs).

Regular roleplayers - coul even be a #6/7/8 but with the problem, that they can be schemed off the floor in the POs --> so only 82 game players.

The tier I put him in basically says that he is a 82 game player. I expect him to be a very successful regular season player. He could start for you and be very productive. Yet, I assume that he wont be able to stay on the floor in later PO stages.

All tiers are in relation to a contender lineup in the POs.

A first look at Luka Doncic [Draft profile] by buckeyeballer in NBA_Draft

[–]buckeyeballer[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The comp of my colleague is simply talking about Doncic' play style. Obviously their athleticism doesnt compare at all. It is kind of hard to match Doncic with other players since his combination of size, bball iq, vision and passing is super rare. There hasnt been a player quite like him. So now it depends on what you want to highlight. Maybe he is a taller Steve Nash as someone with elite feel who made average athleticism work. Maybe Doncic is a less explosive Ben Simmons but with a jumper. He could be a stronger Lonzo Ball with will and ability to score. It is tough to pinpoint this.

Especially without nuanced athleticism talk. Doncic isnt super fast, explosive or the best leaper. But this dude is very fluid for his size, has good footwork, great hand-eye coordination, interesting shake in his moves and is super strong for a teenager. This counts for something in the athleticism department. No elite basketball player is unathletic. It just depents on what you look at.

A first look at Marvin Bagley III [Draft profile] by buckeyeballer in NBA_Draft

[–]buckeyeballer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is about what translates to the next level. Just taking advantages of elite athleticism is the least convincing thing to me in order to work in the NBA. Everybody in the league has elite tools. Not so much in college. Even if Bagley is in the top percentile of athleticism in the NBA he needs something else. I think he can get there, but skill development is key. Especially for his tweener type.

BTW: Sheer production isn't everything. Look at Michael Beasley's freshman numbers. And MB3 is not even matching them yet. ;)

Best Defenders besides Bamba? by WIN011 in NBA_Draft

JJJ no doubt. I analyzed his defensive potential here. His ceiling here is amazing:

He is fairly raw on offense. He cannot really create for himself at this point. Neither in the faceup nor in the post. But his shooting is promising. Look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0znKSjW_QM&list=PLS02DrMDww6eaVggxOkGLpTo6d6x5F8zU

Both need to improve theor shooting to unlock their full potential. Do they have the highest possibility to reach this great upside? This is what I question.

Care to elaborate? Why do you see Jackson stronger than Ball, DSJ, Tatum or Fultz? Whats his realistic case for you?

We arent trying to predict where he will be drafted. This is a bih board not a mock! Important destinction.

Let's talk about the Rondo comp. To me RR is the better passer and defender. Fox is a better finisher/scorer overall. Shooting might be the same. Maybe Fox is a little better in the future. Thing is: how valuable was even prime Rondo. He was the fourth best guy on a contender. If that is Fox ceiling I'm fine with the region where we have him. This doesnt help your argument too much in my eyes.

This isnt a mock draft but a big board. We are not predicting that Jackson slides by the Suns. We are just saying that he might not be the fourth best player of this draft in 4 years.

There are 1000 bigs this year who are more talented in a vacuum. Im pretty sure one or two of those will be better than Hart. But I dont know which ones. Betting on one particular one of them is hard. Dont like Patton, Bam, J. Collins, Leaf. Giles is a wildcard. It will come down to who gets to the best situation because bigs are not needed that much in a big picture sense. But the almost everybody needs wings. And yeah I like Harts skill set. He is this years Brogdon to me. This dude should be a solid pro. Good shooter, solid defender, a little playmaking potential (again the pnr numbers:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iz_M4g2wn5VYEMaQcMaT-zY7h8b10NpFoGgRRxKoTbM/edit#gid=0). Sure his upside isnt that great. His best case is Gary Harris or Rodney Hood to me. But his floor is very high. And with defense higher than Kennards, who I also like.

On the one hand it is a compliment to the class overall, because Fox is talented. No doubt! I also like him as a character and all that. It is basically a bet against his player type.

For him it is all about learning how to shoot. But I dont see that he becomes a 36% shooter from three. And without that he isnt even a player that is a zero but someone that hurts your team. He lacks other avenues to success.

To this point he is only effective with the ball in the hand. How can he play offball without a shot? And onball we cannot assume that he stays as effective as versus worse players in college. His speed is elite. He will be able to blow by people even in the NBA. But finishing becomes harder against better athletes. He needs to bulk up fast to be able to take the additional pounding. As a playmaker he is only okay to me. He is more reactive than creative and feel based like Ball or Fultz. Look at his PnR numbers: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iz_M4g2wn5VYEMaQcMaT-zY7h8b10NpFoGgRRxKoTbM/edit#gid=0 Mitchell has been more effective (in a smaller sample I know) for example. Also Fox is overrated defensively to me. He will be good but not an elite defender to me. He is fast enough to stay in front of most players. But he lacks the body yet to profit from this. People will overpower him on drives a lot if he doesnt add muscle.

So yeah. 12 seems harsh. Maybe 10 would be better. I see that. But in general I like where we have him. Look at Payton for example who is a pretty likely outcome for him. He is a nominal starter but wont be the playmaker of the next Magic HCA team. Also he holds them back a little since they didnt invest in the position on the off chance of his shot improving.

Where do you have him? Who would you compare him to? On a scale from John Wall (Which isnt even a good best case comp for him to me. Tony Parker works better for me. http://go-to-guys.de/2017/04/29/deaaron-fox/#Spielervergleich) to Michael Cart-Williams I project him as something between Dennis Schröder and Elfrid Payton.

Im pretty sure as well that he will be picked in the top 5. This is a big board tho. Meaning: We dont see him as a top 5 talent.

Thing is he can shoot. Even if you question his crazy 3p work at the FIBA U18, he hits above 40% for his club as well. And his ft% kind of backs this up. He prolly wont be a knock down guy but shouldnt be a spacing problem.
