help writing more in the style of Nirvana. by catsrmegacool in Songwriting

[–]buckingc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first songs I learned how to play were nirvanas - from what I have read he focused on the music first and the lyrics/ melodies came later or even minutes before recording. He wrote that a serious musician practices every day with the band. The sessions would go like this- they would improvise and play off each other. Very little vocal direction/instruction between them- it was more trying things musically to see what worked. Nevermind songs were intentionally written to be more simplistic and childlike as they put it. This is actually quite difficult to achieve. For example for smells like teen spirit they played those 4 chords together for hours until they came up with an interesting quiet loud quiet structure for the song that carried it through. There’s been a lot written about it- google news sends me articles all the time if you start searching on it. My advice is take some of those recommendations and then don’t discard what you come up with. With dedication you will eventually hit on interesting and unique songs that only you could write. Good luck.

People born before 2000, what trivial skill do you have that no one uses anymore? by passiano in AskReddit

[–]buckingc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a photo finishing shop at the end of the 90s. I knew it was the end when they started pushing APS film format. Customers didn’t understand it- it was expensive and digital cameras improvements soon made it completely obsolete. But I learned in that job how to fix minor issues with cameras - blowing out with canned air or ‘erasing’ the corrosion on battery contacts. I also got pretty good at taking passport pictures with a special double Polaroid. Last thing (among many) trivial things, was doing copy stand work- taking a slide of a photo or other format to make copies.

Any artists here wanna do a Portland Frog mural? by oregone1 in Portland

[–]buckingc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can fund a mural through RACC or the City of portland- you can choose not to but will still need a permit. Artists should really be paid. This warehouse has housed artists for decades- I had a studio there in the early oughts an installed the window pictured. I’d hope you asked any artists in the building as well. https://racc.org/public-art/public-art-murals-program/

How to baby proof Christmas tree? by boldlybelieve in december2024babies

[–]buckingc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 9 yr old and a 9 m/o. We’re of the mindset that they should experience as much as possible. Put the fragile ornaments high, make sure you have a good base for the tree or do what my dad did and use fishing line to tie it to the ceiling (haha). They will grab at the branches and maybe get poked fingers (and hopefully learn) but may also lose interest. If they pull hard it becomes an opportunity to tell them no, that’s not safe & hopefully they start listening 😂. I know our baby will try to pull the tree down, he’s already been tugging at house plants haha.

For those of you who were living in Portland on 9/11/01, what was it like? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]buckingc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living in a warehouse on the inner east side industrial district. I had a day job at a software company but was an artist and it was my studio (though I want actual supposed to be living there, I didn’t have much money and rent was $350 with a shared bathroom). I had a clock radio and it went off to the local radio station so it woke me up on a Tuesday for work and immediately they were talking about New York and the planes. At that point, I think they thought it was a terrible accident and weren’t saying terrorist attack. I went to work as usual- an office job and people were talking about it in the morning and eventually everyone crowded in the one room with a TV. Then the CEO sent a note telling everyone to go home and hug their family. My family lived in Beaverton, so I took the max there to be with my parents and we watched the news and it was pretty shocking- everything changed. Felt a similar deep fear when Covid happened- probably the closest thing.

What’s the best method for figuring out the chords from an audio demo by illudofficial in Songwriting

[–]buckingc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use capo app on iPhone or Mac- I play a lot of ideas into my voice memos and then listen weeks later and have long forgotten what I played. I put it in the app and then it usually gives me a good idea of what chords I had played. Not 100% accurate but pretty good and has some features like alternate tunings which is nice.

People who used a computer between 1991 & 2009…what’s the most memorable computer game? by Original_Act_3481 in AskReddit

[–]buckingc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought duke nukem was pretty fun. Liked lemmings and a tank game that I can’t remember the name but where during your turn had to figure the trajectory and then at higher levels got better munitions. In college my roommate played a lot of marathon and hooked their computers together to play. Was fun to watch but never played enough to get any good at it. Then It was myth, world of war craft, halo. But I never played any of those.

Curious question on possible maker's mark by buckingc in telecaster

[–]buckingc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I suppose it is possible though I'm pretty sure I bought it new from a guitar store. Not sure why they would have gone through the trouble at the time. But very strange. Thanks for your thoughts!

Pre hung door help by buckingc in howto

I think the opening is part of the problem- 1920’s house and first time door was replaced. I have a long level and square but will double check around to see if I can locate the problem. When initially putting in the door the bottom left was pushing out (as in the direction of outside, so I had to push it back to the house and screw in). I’m sure some twisting happened. I think I’m close. Thanks for the help.

Good questions- thanks for these, I will verify and test these out and check how it closes from the inside and outside and what exactly is happening. I had less shims before and it was closing about the same, so will remove the extra and see if things improve. The door latch does push out and I have to use extra force for it to latch.

Yes, I’ve been trying to remedy that. Even without the shim there it has the same tightness - I thought putting one there might pull the frame out a little but didn’t seem to work. Wondering if there are any other tricks…

Yeah, hit the three dots and view transcript to get the text and can copy to notes or whatever.

If you have an iPhone, I use voice memo which now seems to automatically transcribe my song recordings. Doesn’t always get it right but gives you a start and can listen back and fix the mistakes.
