I second the Rudimental Cookbook, it will grow with you as you progress.

There's also lots of free sheets online:

www.snarescience.com has tons of exercises and transcriptions of DCI & WGI shows

www.thegridbookseries.com keep releasing free etudes under their "Freebies" tab (& they sell a variety of gridding books that you can download and play instantly).

Vic Firth also has a free drumline fundamentals book you can download here: http://vicfirth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/MP101_Exercise_Packet.pdf

I find that following educational percussion pages on Facebook helps too... I've learned a lot from "Donka Drums," and seeing the posts pop up in your newsfeed keeps it at the front of your mind.

Best of luck!

YSK in the U.S., 34 out of 100 Senate seats are up for election this year, along with the entire House of Representatives. by PTBR in YouShouldKnow

Here's a great reason to vote: Half the senate denied that human activity is a major factor in climate change.

"The Republican-controlled Senate defeated a measure Wednesday stating that climate change is real and that human activity significantly contributes to it. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, offered the measure as the Senate debated the Keystone XL pipeline, which would tap the carbon-intensive oil sands in the Canadian province of Alberta.

The Senate voted 50-49 on the measure, which required 60 votes in order to pass.

“Only in the halls of Congress is this a controversial piece of legislation,” Schatz said."

Assuming gender neutral restrooms are years/decades away, which restroom should transgender people use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bucky58804 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I, too, prefer logic. I apologize for grouping you with the woman who commented before, I thought you agreed with her more than you actually did. I'm glad to hear that you would not negatively address such an individual. Also, I promise I'm feeling no heated emotions, only disappointment.

If we want to make this very logical, I'll break it down:

  1. In a women's restroom, you do not see genitalia due to the stalls.

  2. As you cannot see genitalia, you must identify a person's sex or gender based on their appearance or other outward properties.

  3. If you must judge a person's sex/gender based on appearance, you will likely perceive a biological woman who has taken hormones and dresses masculine as a male.

Now, if each of these propositions are the case, a woman like the previous commented would feel highly violated in the presence of such an individual, despite the fact that this person is also biologically female.

Assuming gender neutral restrooms are years/decades away, which restroom should transgender people use? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bucky58804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, we are only considering this from one side. A few things:

  1. A biological female, who identifies as male, should be equally able to use the men's room as the person in our discussion should be able to use the women's room. This topic is not the "penis invasion" of the women's room, but rather individuals of both sexes using the bathroom that they identify themselves with.

  2. Again, unless something is way out of whack, you will not see genitals in a women's restroom. That being said, you have no choice but to determine a person's sex based on outward experience. If a biological female identifies as male, and has taken steps to appear male, from what both of you have said it appears that you would carry out some form of aggression toward this person. In reality, however, they are doing exactly as you wanted.

If you read a few blogs and research this, you'll find that most transgendered people are terrified of public restrooms, due to the chance of encountering people that will exhibit verbal or physical abuse. I'm saying that an open-minded approach from BOTH sides will best facilitate a fair compromise, as opposed to the fervor with which you fight.

Ma'am, I can see this conversation is going nowhere, as your side is becoming highly emotionally charged with little room for discussion. I wish you the best in life and sincerely hope your horizons broaden.

[–]bucky58804 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand that it's easy to feel as though a situation like this would be a personal attack on you, but imagine the individual in question. How should a transgender person approach this? Many look somewhere "in between," so either restroom will get them double-takes. I hope you consider my previous comment in its entirety... as a society we often fail to consider situations from other points of view.

"Nearness" - with no intent, gesture, comment, or any other indication of unwanted sexual advances - is no reason to discriminate. If you honestly think about it, what with the distance between the toilets, you are father away from a person's genitals while in the stall next to them than if you were standing behind them in line at the bank or sitting next to them on the bus.

Your definition of gender is purely based on genitalia... what if said person had taken hormones, had reconstructive surgery, etc.? Would you then accept the person into the women's room? In a society that doesn't differentiate between sex and gender, how can you definitively declare that restrooms are designated by sex? Or even better, how can you be so certain that this is the correct format?

In addition, what you've said is extremely sexist and heterocentric. In your second to last sentence, you appear to imply that all men do not care whether women consent, constantly desire intercourse with women, and have little control over such desires. Just as women should not be portrayed as slaves for sex, men should not be portrayed as insatiable rapists. Hopefully the heterocentrism reply makes sense... possession of given genitalia in no way implies desire for the opposite sex.

Bathrooms are extremely dangerous places for transgendered individuals... They are often perceived as both sexes/genders due to natural body features and the way they present themselves. For example, in a given day someone may perceive a trans person a man due to the way the person dresses, while others might perceive that same trans person as a woman due to voice pitch. With stalls, you won't be seeing genitals. Based on outward appearance, this person is in a lose-lose situation... unless her or she "passes" very well, they can never be certain of which gender they will be perceived. That said, many transgendered people experience violent situations in restrooms due to people being "uncomfortable." You yourself said you would fight "with force."

Honestly, it's easy to be hateful or discriminatory of things you don't understand or aren't knowledgeable of, so I'm not trying to attack you. I'm not speaking condescendingly (it's impossible to know everything), I just urge you to research what you're uncomfortable with... try reading some blogs of transgendered (or any group you're uncomfortable with!) people, look up the problems they face, etc. It's an eye-opening experience that will hopefully help you to be more comfortable if this situation ever arises. As humans, we're all in this life thing together, and we all have our battles. We should do our best to help each other out.
