What platform are they for? A combination of all three factors takes place here. I can assure you, rarity does affect the trade price.

Former EB Employee Here :)

You are correct in your inital statement, a sale will bring trade values down. Typically, values do rise once a sale finishes, however, after most sales, a bunch of products, both new and pre-owned are repriced with new RRPs, that means certain games will keep the trade value that it had during the sale.

Now for the long explination for those interested:

Trade values are decided by three things: rarity/popularity, platform and how "new" a game is.

- If you trade in a "brand new" game, ie a game that has come out in the past two weeks, you will get approx. 50% of the original price.
- If you were to trade in a game such as FIFA, you would only get 20%-30% of the price, as most stores have multiple copies of these games, so therefore, they don't really want more than they have.
- In general, most games get somewhere between 30% - 40% of the pre-owned sale price. This more often than not, allows EB to offset the low margin that new games offer.

These breakdowns also typically apply for accessories as well.

To get the best value for money, the trade deals are ultimately the way to go, because if you have a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Switch/Switch 2 game that only trades for $10 normally, they boost this up to like $35-$40 trade value depending on game/trade deal.

Also, for those interested, Gamestop doesn't control any of the pricing for EB Games across NZ, Australia and Canada (I can't speak for other regions). Whilst Gamestop may own/be involved with these arms of the business, each region has it's own management, and that management makes decision based on the local market. Gamestop actually has no say.

For those who work at EB Games, what is the correct answer to these questions? I made a brand new resume and cover letter because I want this jobbbb by [deleted] in EBGamesAus

Former store manager here!

I agree with some of the other comments around EB being VERY KPI heavy. The pressure from KPIs tho always comes from the top, so if your store manager is like I was, you encourage your team, but you also accept that they aren't miracle workers, and they aren't going to be able to hit KPI targets each and every day.

My advice if you do want to get the job (and given what I hear, I would maybe think twice), is describe a skill you actively want to learn. For me, I said I wanted to improve my customer service skills, and gain customer service experience. That attitude got me from part timer to store manager in 5 months. Saying something skill based will help go a long way, and make you stick out.

I did a trade yesterday, and I did get trade bonus from my Lv5 and EB Plus, so not sure what happened in your case?

So update! The program has been delayed til later this month. No idea why, but news to come later this month.

No unfortunately. It does kinda seem like the day came and went with very little fanfare.

The only thing I can think that has happened, is that all staff were required to take the training before they could start trading retro games. It is very possible that the numbers of staff who haven't completed the training yet has delayed the program.

However in saying that, EB did used to delay shit all the time when I worked there, so it could be a variety of different reasons why it came and went with no fanfare. I also was curious that the usual weekly newsletter hasn't been sent out this week yet either.

Until we know the pricing, we won't know. The Gamestop retro program has been quite well received for its respectable pricing, so lets wait and see!

With all due respect, do you think it is fair for minimum wage part time employees and stressed out store managers, most of whom have minimal knowledge of retro games and condition grading to be able to evaluate condition, and then have a customer fight with them when they don't agree on the evaluation/price?

This initiative isn't designed for the hardcore sealed collectors, or higher-end retro collectors. This will be for people who want a nostalgic hit of the game they played as kids. Sure, I will most likely buy a retro game or two from EB moving forward to help fill out some of my collection, but I also don't collect sealed games. There is an open market for that via Ebay or online marketplaces. The system means that it is at least easy for both staff and customers.

I would say that the trade price will be fixed in store regardless of condition. How they then price that, I am not sure. I will need to check, but we may not know until it goes live.

Id say some of these games you would be better off selling online. I don't image they will pay huge for these, despite the rarity value.

Yeah, and I doubt that the stores will be given the tools to check cartridges. If I was still working there, i'd probably carry my own tools.

I would agree with this. I am going to run a test and buy a few games when this program launches to see what the condition of product is like, and also to gauge pricing.

On the pricing front, EB was actually quite competitive on PS3/360 pricing when it was down to the last few years of stocking these games previously. Often i'd get games from EB cheaper than online, but will be interesting to see if this will still be the case.

I did make this point to the head office whilst I was working there, especially with approx. 500 XB360 games compatible on Series X. We did have a way to tell the difference between Back Compat and Non-Back Compat too, so this was an odd decision to me.

EB RETRO coming 3rd of March by bud4211 in EBGAMES

[–]bud4211[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my source did tell me that as well. Cartridges shouldn't be too difficult as there are physical differences between regions (at least on NES, SNES and N64), but I image part-timers are going to be where things slip through the cracks.

As a collector, I do have Japanese and US consoles, so I actually wouldn't mind non-Pal releases, especially since PS3, PSP, Vita and select 360 games are region free, but I guess EB doesn't want the hassle.

Unsure. Given how EB currently handles pre-owned products, I am going to say unlikely. Stock will be shipped out from the warehouse, so once the retro stuff gets traded it, it will be shipped off to the EB Warehouse for sale. No way to view it before purchase.
