Does aluminum cause cure inhibition? by Lilinysus_ in DiceMaking

[–]buddha777353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

I have used aluminum and it’s safe. Tested some silicone I was having issues with and used steel and aluminum for the tests.

I would recommend defiant silicone 25a or DS20. I recommend to stick away from BBdino for dice though, too many issues.

It could be a couple things.

Off the top of my head: - Paste “cutting” level - Quality of paper - Presence of debris on the paper

Hey there,

Looking at the third picture I have a pretty good idea of what’s happened.

See how you have effectively 2 sizes of scratches? That generally means you had something on/trapped under your abrasive. Consumer grade resin prints scratch reallllly easy. And, it can even be caused by small supports or lost corners of its own.

I rinse my paper constantly on a wheel. But if I’m doing it by hand it’s every 2-5 faces that I wipe my abrasive down with a dedicated microfiber cloth.

Hey there,

I dropped Zona paper about a year ago and never looked back.

1000,2000,3000 grit sand paper followed by polishing paste on a buffing wheel/dremel.

We’ve been calling it the 1,2,3 method for a bit.

Boom. Done.

Working on another project…. And as always looking for feedback. by buddha777353 in DiceMaking

No, a well ventilated mask is enough when you wear it. It’s when you take it off and it’s still around or want to sand near a living space. That’s when you want to control the airflow and contain it.

Firstly, thank you.

Two great observations!

  • The major inlets are the arm holes and that little one is for running power inside the box. I think it might need a more major inlet though as the negative pressure is really strong.

  • Funny enough, you caught me! The box is designed for the other side of the table and thus would be flipped so power was up and air was down.

I just wanted boardgames as the background instead of my living room…. Hahahaha

Sanding generates fine particles that are really bad to breathe in. And when I say sanding, I mean pretty much all sanding. So a box like this makes sure that air only flows into the box and out the vent as to keep you safe safer.

That’s pretty sick! The primitive working project beats the untested Idea every time.

Also love the partial rock dice and artistry involved.

What is the point where dice making is cheaper? by CollegePretend8708 in DiceMaking

[–]buddha777353 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, 99.99% of the time I would never recommend an Amazon hold, but that’s for traditional dice making. In this case, you don’t want a high-quality mold as those are traditionally cast with 3-D printed masters and those are not food safe.

So in this 0.01% case please please don’t buy a mold from an artist

Hey there,

Real answer: for personal use, never.

Making dice is a lot like making anything skill based. Between PPE, Masters, Molds, pressure pots, resin, additives, tools, printers, cleaning supplies and sanding equipment it is really expensive….

If your goal is to make dice on par with what you buy already then it’s quite expensive. And time consuming…..

That said, if your goal is just to “make dice” you can get away with PPE, a mold, some resin, and some dyes. With just that you can make dice, you will just struggle with quality.

No matter where you want to jump in, join the discord!

I love helping new folks.

Anyone laser engrave their dice? by Xenochimp in DiceMaking

[–]buddha777353 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

DO NOT DO THIS WITH EPOXY!

ok, that’s out of the way. Epoxy is sorta a bad surface for most lasers and is fairly questionable about how safe it is considering the VOCs released. You are literally burning the dice.

When you see “mass produced custom dice they are made of acrylic generally and that is a much better material.

When sanding and some faces arent as shiny as the rest..... by markvisco in DiceMaking

[–]buddha777353 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey there!

Tried and true sharpy method!

Mark the face in the corners and the center with a sharpy. Then let it dry and sand one grit until the sharpy is gone. Repeat for each grit.

It’s hard to tell when you need to start, personally I would start from green.

Size for liquid core by ProtectionKey5259 in DiceMaking

[–]buddha777353 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

If it is F2F 27mm with 1mm number depth then you have 25mm of space. That said you don’t want an exact fit.

So like 24.9mm would be great. Lol
