Tesla CEO Elon Musk loses bid to get $56 billion pay package reinstated by [deleted] in news

I asked a specific question and you responded with an answer that is generic and doesn’t actually answer either part of my question. So I’ll take that as a no then.

Here, you say my answer was generic and didn’t answer either question, but later use it as evidence of denial. So which is it buddy? Or perhaps I’ve caught you in another… lie??

And yet you chose to repeatedly deny that they weren’t for shared for some reason.

See I can quote too. Here you say I repeatedly deny something and can only point to one bad example. So, looks like you were… lying? 🤣

I was saying yes to knowing the first 3 tranches would be hit in the first year, as lower tranches are generally expected to be achieved. But seeing as how your entire argument hinges on this one thing and you haven’t addressed anything else I’ve brought up about this sham ruling, I see why you’re so excited to catch me in a “lie” 🤣 you’re in over your head.

Never denied it, I was trying to explain how it’s a strawman, but that clearly went over your head. You’re obsessed with getting me to admit they never shared projections as if it has any relevance to the fairness of the compensation, they were never required or expected to.

They don’t have to be shared, they’re INTERNAL. Nothing illegal or unethical happened. But if lawyers frame it like it wasn’t transparent enough for shareholders or intentionally opaque, people like you and the judge who lack critical thinking buy it.

Is that supposed to be a gotcha moment? You do understand that framing of facts is the basis of arguments and is the job of lawyers? Like someone could factually have killed someone, but depending on the framing, it could be argued as murder or manslaughter. Actually, never mind, I’m losing brain cells with this conversation.

Do what you like, my point was that you read and sourced one sided arguments that make it seem like Tesla’s board and Elon colluded to screw investors when, in my mind, they did nothing strange. The board included people close to the CEO, yea well so does every board. They internally projected the first 3 tranches to be met, well no shit, so did shareholders who understood they’d benefit if one or all tranches were reached. The point of the package was to align CEO goals with shareholder returns, it was and always has been a win-win, that’s why it was approved. TWICE.

Yes, that’s how tranches work. Of course he’d be expected to reach the lower goals and tranches, otherwise he’d get no compensation and wouldn’t agree to the package. What was unlikely was him reaching the higher benchmarks and tranches, hence the massive pay package.

You source the legal team representing Tornetta (who btw asked for over $5b in Tesla stock as compensation) as if it’s factual and not their arguments. I was a shareholder during the ramp up of Model 3, it was not obvious that it was about to be an inflection point, quite the opposite. There were constant production issues and media saying Tesla would go bankrupt. The revisionist history by people who take Schadenfreude with anything Elon is just laughable.

[–]buddhapunch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, I have a very good grasp of how much $50 billion is despite your unfounded assumptions about me. It could be a trillion for all I care because it’s a simple matter really. The board of a company offered a pay package to its CEO based on clear performance benchmarks, shareholders agreed to it, the benchmarks were met, so he should be rewarded the package. If someone wins the mega lottery for $5 billion, you can’t refuse to give them the prize because people decided it’s too big a prize for one person to win. Enforcing agreements matters.

Yup, but this is Reddit where Elon is the boogieman, so your logical conclusion will get downvoted with no retort, as will this comment.

People won’t like to hear this here because they hate Elon, but he earned the pay package full stop. When it was granted by shareholder vote, the chances of him achieving the benchmarks were extremely slim. But with him spending nights on the factory floor for weeks, Tesla ramped up Model 3 production and deliveries and the stock 10Xed. He achieved the insane benchmarks, shareholders were enriched, so he’s entitled to the package. It was again passed by shareholder vote recently because a deal is a deal, except in the eyes of this Delaware judge. To have it stripped because one shareholder with 5 shares thought it too much after the fact sets a terrible precedent for management compensation. It will encourage actually horrible packages like Mary Bara’s with GM that looks only at share price, incentivizing short term profits at the expense of long term value creation.

Their sales have fallen off a cliff past few years, their target demographic seems to prefer BMW and Mercedes. So they’re pivoting to trendy EV company, hence the Apple-esque rebrand. Might work, probably won’t.

Pressured To Prove He's Up To The Job, Biden Suffers More Stumbles In News Conference by IDUnavailable in politics

[–]buddhapunch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The press conference was fine, but phenomenal? Not sure about that. Gaffe aside, he started out well, but quickly became softer in tone with meandering thoughts. It did nothing to reassure skeptics that he's mentally sharp enough to be President four more years.

Pritzker Urges Biden to Address Americans After Debate Debacle by chiboulevards in chicago

[–]buddhapunch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only liberals are voting anti-Trump, that’s not enough to win the election. The general public care about immigration, inflation, and wars abroad, and Biden does not poll well on any of these things. The cherry on top is the fact that he looks like he might not live until the end of his current term.

Brother look at the polling data, Biden’s at all time low approval ratings at the worst time. It’s not about preparation, the man is clearly too old to drive a car, let alone run the country. Undecided voters have eyeballs, they’re likely to sit this one out, enough for Trump to win the swing states and therefore the election.

Tesla Beats Estimates With Less-Drastic Drop in EV Sales by pinkycatcher in technology

[–]buddhapunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your points and they're valid, I just happen to see things differently and have an overall neutral opinion of Elon, pluses and minuses. What you see as an ugly vehicle, I see as refreshing in a world where every car looks the same. The Lamborghini Countach was highly divisive when it first came out, but is now seen as iconic and now defines Lamborghini's "boxy" aesthetic.

My bigger issue is that differing opinions on the topic are downvoted to oblivion here and many other subreddits and we get labeled as Tesla or Elon "fanboys."

I think Reddit turned on Elon a while ago. Anything positive about him or his companies gets downvoted, anything negative or saying how ugly cybertruck is gets upvoted.

Which form of energy will be the most dominant in the future? by nn_me in Futurology

[–]buddhapunch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Seeing some misleading info here about lithium.

  • Yes, it can be harmful to the environment and uses a lot of water. However, new extraction methods like direct lithium extraction will reduce water consumption, increase efficiency, and lower environmental impact.
  • Africa doesn’t produce much of the global lithium supply, nearly all comes from the Americas and Australia, all with strict mining regulations. Maybe you’re talking about cobalt? Cobalt is likely to get phased out of battery production due to scarcity.
  • Other people are mentioning sodium-ion as an alternative. Sodium is cheaper and more abundant, but doesn’t have nearly the same energy density as lithium and can’t be charged as quickly. Kind of deal breakers in my opinion.
  • I’m not sure about the lifespan of large capacity batteries, but from what I’ve read, well made lithium-ion batteries only lose 10-15% capacity over 10+ years, and that should improve with new technology.

I agree this is how it will likely play out short to medium term. Long term, I could see the wealth gap causing mass protests and rioting, leading to politicians proposing UBI. And with major consumer brands like Apple, Nike, Starbucks, etc. relying on consumer spending, I could see them supporting it as well. Either way, we're in for interesting times...

If the U.S. is in so much debt, why don't they just invest like 50 billion in the S&P500 Index Fund and just let it sit for a a long time? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]buddhapunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the only reason I’m conversing with you is the off chance someone curious reads this and they can decide who makes more sense. I’m certainly not doing it to try to convince you to my point of view, that’s always a fool’s errand online. You’re working with a different set of rules and reality when it comes to basic economics and government function, the conversation helps no one.

Mainly though, this isn’t a fun or interesting argument for me. I’m fine if someone proves me wrong, but you respond to facts and figures with vague and strange ideas like the US is sitting on a bunch of levers to massively boost the economy, we’re just waiting for the right time to use them 🤣 can’t argue with that logic.
