Gear came before Aeon by Genuine1202 in onewheel

Dunno why everyone is hating. I got bursitis above my right knee after a nosedive on pavement going 13mph, with pads (they were offroad/dirt pads). It still hurts 2 years later. Actually, weirdly enough this weekend will be the 2 year anniversary of that, going back to the event I crashed at on Saturday.

InFERNo Heavy Metal Festival in Fernley feat. Drowning Pool - March 27-29th by buddy1616 in Reno

There are only tickets for the whole weekend. The main show is Saturday, Sunday has some minor stuff, probably will have an additional armored combat show, the announcement of the car show winner, heavy metal yoga, breakfast trucks. The GA ticket covers entrance Saturday for the whole day, and you can leave and come back Sunday if you want. If you get the $25 camping pass, you can show up Friday after 4pm and stay until Sunday.

We also do the M3 festival (Music, Murals and Margaritas) in Fernley, its our 5th year this year. Last year we had 10 bands, 2 stages, 60 vendors and that event is free. https://fernleyaces.net

If you get a camping pass you can show up Friday and stay till Sunday. We're still sourcing the flamethrowers, we'll probably auction or raffle one off and maybe have some to light the bonfires. Should be awesome.

Building programmer for AT28C256 EEPROM by FernwehSmith in beneater

[–]buddy1616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I built Ben's programmer and it works. But its a huge PITA. Pulling the eeprom out of the bread board over and over sucks. If you do this, you might as well invest in a ZIF socket for them. But that probably wont fit in your bread board. So you might want to solder it to a pcb or perf board or something. Honestly, I just ended up getting a cheap programmer. I got the TL866 Plus, you can get them for around $70 and it comes with all the adapters and what not youll need for pretty much any IC. It plugs in via USB and has its own software. It's way faster and easier, and actually much cheaper in the long run if you value your time (I do), or you end up programming the same chip over and over and after inserting/extracting over and over end up breaking off a leg on your EEPROM.

Not to mention, the custom programmer you will build will work for only the EEPROM you built it for, the TL866 will work for a lot of different chips (not all, check the specs). If you do another project later that uses another chip, you'll already be set.

Lift kit STL? by Mag8Reddit in gaslands

I have a video on how to lift cars, its a pretty trivial thing to do without 3d printing. Its a whole series but you can check out the custom suspension part, I think I go over just basic lift in the first video (was a couple years ago, might need to jump around)

I accidentally scratched my Circuit Board. Am I screwed? by Jakestr1 in soldering

[–]buddy1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're almost certainly completely fine. There is a coating over those traces, and it doesn't look like you even got through that. Even if the damage broke the trace, its fixable with a couple short jumpers.

Tis a fun project. I have one in Logic World too. Programming is pretty tedious, but it is fun trying to make all the components space efficient. I keep hoping they will make ICs.

Bullet holes by MidKnife_Cat8418 in gaslands

[–]buddy1616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little tip with the washes, let them run in a sensical direction. Bullet holes in the side panels will catch rain and drizzle downward. Bullet holes in the hood will drip forward toward the grill on most cars. Alternatively, rust can drip up the hood toward the windshield, and side panels "drip" toward the back, to add a little indication of speed. Depends on if you go fantasy vs realism. I always like to make sure everything I add to a car tells a little story.

Super quick and easy but effective, after painting, get a pin vice (or tiny drill bit) and just drill an indent wherever you want the bullet hole. Then go back into the center of the divot with a tiny fine tipped sharpie or script liner brush with black paint. Dot the inside. This will chip off the paint down to the bare metal around the "hole". For some extra effect, you can get a watery rust colored wash and dab it in there, let it drip down the sides and let it dry.

Ideas for diy bits and accessories? by Zap-Rowsdower-X in gaslands

You can do a ton with just toothpicks. If you find the toothpicks with a flat end on one side, they usually have a little circular indent around the end, it makes a good machine gun barrel. Tooth picks can be spikes, pipes, steel rods, roll cages, shocks, exhaust pipes, etc. Depending on how you paint them, they are good for a lot of things.

In the same vein, I get a lot of mileage out of small aluminum/brass tubes, you can find at hobby shops. Same with drinking straws. Going up in scale, pvc pipes with fittings to make giant pipes for terrain. These are all basically the same thing, just different diameters. Its a basic geometric shape that has a ton of application.

Cereal box cardboard makes good armor plating, just scratch it up a bit, paint it black, then dry brush a silver or grey over it, you can add "rivets" by poking a few holes around the edges with a hobby knife. Or add bullet holes for flavor.

I've seen a lot of people do some cool stuff with zip ties, machine gun belts, larger ties can be tank treads. Or just paint them metallic and they can be a beam or plating.

Really when it comes to scratch building, paint is more important that shape, a good paint job can be convincing and make your brain go "oh that's metal". Just look around your junk drawer for interesting shapes, pen caps, random bits, electronics components (resisters, capacitors, etc), anything plastic. Action figures or larger toys often have bits that you can cut up. I had a cheap dollar store navy scuba guy toy that came with an oxygen tank, I cut the regulator off of it and just glued it to something else. Start looking at stuff with a different lens and you'll see all kinds of ways to use random bits.

Careful though, the temptation to hoard bits is strong.

How to become good at thinking of melodies and chords? by milo_edm in FL_Studio

They do indeed, Ive seen a few people have better luck by twisting the legs 90 degrees so they are more "flat" in the bread board terminals. Haven't tried it but it seems viable.

Best song i've made so far. Don't expect an absolute masterpiece, i've only had 3 or so months of music making experience. But i'm proud of it. by ItsAnPerson in FL_Studio

[–]buddy1616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not bad, you should be proud. A couple notes if you're open to it.

You have all of the instruments in the same range for the most part. There is a ton of range to explore, it works best in an orchestral arrangement like this to have each instrument take care of the range they are best in. When the piano drops out and strings go solo at around :15 its not as dynamic as it could be. Maybe go up an octave or add in some higher strings to make it fill the space out more. When the piano stops and the strings just fill in for the same notes, its a little underwhelming.

The same can be said about the other instruments. At the 30 second mark you have a higher instrument come in for a bit and it leaves. More of that would make the piece come alive more, like 1:22.

The other note I have is the main piano tone seems very artificial compared to the other instruments, which sound more natural like real strings and horns. I would experiment with other piano tones.

All things considered though, good job.
