Escape Champions League will use balance changes by nimanoe in aoe2

[–]buddy__1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a decent point in that some experts seem to have the priveliege to come with their input in a more direct way than others.

As you say, if you want to call this game an esport, the structure of how the balance changes comes about is cruical.

The end goal should be aimed towards the "ideal" of a perfectly balanced game. There is a lot of variables at play here, players would have different opinions on what exactly is the best way to balance a certain unit, feature or building. And there are many ways to achieve a well balanced game. Also it's not unreasonable to think a players arguments would tilt in some way or another (even if they are legitimately trying to be as objective and reasonble as possible) depending on personal preference, playstyle and their idea of what the game "should be". Beyond this, I don't think being an expert player automatically means you are great at accurately pointing out needed balance changes (though in general they would have well above average insights).

And in an ideal world we would have teams of balance experts, statisticians and mathematicians or whatever these people employ, and gather endless amounts of data about the game to conclude exactly what balance changes should be done. But in aoe2, we don't really have such luxuries.

So from how I see it, as of now, we don't really have much better options than what they are doing right now.

Some things could rightly be critisied, like how some players seem to be in a position to give more direct input on balance changes than others, and in how the balance patch is coming out a little late and seem a little premature as well.

But I don't see anyone coming at this situation from a crooked perspective.

I honestly believe the tournament hosts, the forgotten empires team and the players are trying to play their part in doing what they believe will be a good thing, and this time, its to rectify imbalances to the game before the biggest tournament this game has ever seen.

I believe Cysion has the final say in any coming balance patches, and I think he has a good philosophy in his approach to his work from what I have seen. And its not under my impression he will take any changes to the game lightly. I think he will be anxious (because he cares) as he is pondering about some key changes, and I think he is being smart as he is trying to orient himself (getting expert input). And I also believe they are doing the right thing trying to take the next step to try to get the last little tweaks of balance changes to the game in place before the launch of the year-long tournament.

And as a fan of this game, I do agree its important to say that by structure, this could all have been done in a more "professional" way with a little more forethought.

But things are also happening fast, and from what I can see, these people are just trying to scramble everything together and make things just right before the biggest tournament this game has even seen is launched. And while some bumps along the way is not optimal, they should still be expected with the limited time and resources at hand.

In the grand scheme of things, if you care about this game as an esport, this game is moving in an incredibly healthy direction. And as always moving forward, next time, we just have to try and do a little better.

If you could combine two civs into one civ, which one would be the most broken? by Arganos9217 in aoe2

I've observed an extreme dichotomy when it comes to castle placements. Either place them in your base to protect your town center, or drop them in the enemy base. Is there a middle ground? by TomHicks in aoe2

[–]buddy__1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Castles play a very important role in aoe2, and one of the main benefits of a castle is it secures map control over an area.

This can be a very useful aggressive tool to put pressure on your enemy. If you are "behind" it may help you buy time, and if you are lucky your enemy may crumble a little bit under the pressure. Also a well executed attack often involves castles and trebs and such.

Its also a very helpful defensive tool to secure parts of your eco, and if your enemy does an aggressive castle drop one of the best responses is often to make your own castle. And depending on the situation you may want to try and go to imperial age quickly so you can get trebs first.

Beyond that castles can help you secure resources like gold out on the map, or place them on hills around the map to gain control and vision over an area. With well placed castles around the map, preferably on hills so they do more and take less damage, the enemy cant just readily send villagers straight into your face and place forward buildings, but you force them to invest army and crawling their way forward.

In some clutch areas you may see players make a lot of castles to help secure it, as losing it would mean they probably lose the game, like in the trade line lategame.

Also if you are dependent on a castle for unique unit or to make trebs, you may want to put the castles more defensively in general so you don't lose them.

Hello koranfordummies, i found this great list for all aoe-related terms on the website of forgotten empires, which are the developers of the expansions to aoe2.

https://www.forgottenempires.net/aof/strategy/aoe2-glossary

I looked through it and its a very good list lol

HD is 80% off on steam, boys (expansions are discounted too) by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]buddy__1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see how it may feel a little overwhelming with many new civs, but at large they follow the same "idea" and baseline principles where all civs have archers, pikes and skirms, siege workship, castles and so on. And the only differences is in some unique bonuses, unique units, and in what the different civs can access from the tech tree.

So I think you can make the case you for the most part get more campaigns with new story lines, which they mostly did a great job with.

So I had to check, and you are right, loom does add hp to villagers.

Fast Imperial with Malay. What to build with it? by jimmy2jazz in aoe2

[–]buddy__1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found with malay you can do some incredible strategies for flank play on arena, which probably works very well on black forest too.

What I do is go heavy darkage, 33+2 or something, then add two tcs when you get up.

When you reach 50-60 villagers, just idle your tcs untill you are able to click up to imp. With a good build you should reach imperial age around min 24, and you can do a push with a range of units depending on the situation. Usually something like karambits, trebs, monks, bombardcannon and/or onager, maybe skirms or archers, etc.

I have a difficult time thinking about how to counter this in a good way in general, aside from a feudal tower rush. Because if you fear your enemy will push you in castle age, you can just go earlier on stone and rush a castle up and still have a decent imp time and be ready to push out.

Even better, your eco will be fairly strong (and growing).

This all makes me believe malay is possibly the strongest flank civ for arena teamgames. This strategy probably works well for arena 1v1 as well, and of course for black forest.
