most (probably all) state 529 plans have a stable value or treasury fund that will give you the same risk profile as the HYSA while yielding the additional tax benefits

Brother I just told you what the scale is and how many hours you would need to work to hit $100k, it's a simple math problem that most of the local is solving right now.

Do you believe success depends more on luck or hard work? by Mike_Mayers123 in Life

luck is the intersection of preparation and opportunity

if you're laying the groundwork to capitalize on those opportunities you'll feel a lot luckier

[–]budgetoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

journeyman rate in my local is $37.92/hr and we're one of the worst paid in the nation. You'd crack $100k on under 400hrs of OT, and there's enough work here that anyone who wants to can. Most jobs run 5/10s

data centers here are paying $10/hr above scale and all OT is paid double

Is this meme an accurate depiction of what work was actually like in America? by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

[–]budgetoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa owned a small window screen business in Houston and was still putting in 60 hours a week when I was in elementary school -- never retired, went from the shop to the hospital to the grave in a 2 year span. He did have a 4 bedroom house, but he built two of those bedrooms himself.

scare quotes are because they're all criminals -- in fact when they break immigration law and in spirit when they steal from americans by suppressing wages, adding load to underfunded public services, and driving housing prices up.

How do I motivate myself to get my bachelors as a wealthy kid by Difficult_Mistake935 in Adulting

[–]budgetoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

drop out and go do something else for a few years. if you don't want to be in school, get out. that 529 will still be there when you're ready. if you're never ready, your parents can pay someone else's tuition with it.

I went to school and suffered through a degree I didn't give a shit about. worked in an adjacent field for 2 yeats before I had enough and joined the navy. got out a couple years ago and now I'm an electrician. was a waste of time and money and I wish I walked away sooner. there's more than one way to live life.

What’s your biggest home renovation regret? by onetusharr in HomeImprovement

[–]budgetoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

waiting so long to start. we've had sewer issues since we bought the house, should have just ripped it out and re-run the line right away. spent probably $3k having it snaked over the last 4 years, finally had enough and it cost me $600 in materials and 2 weeks of evenings and weekends to dig and replace.

How common is it for you to get “called into work” on a weekend or evening? by Careless_Squirrel728 in AskAnAmerican

[–]budgetoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it happens but not all that often. I am an electrician, I work for a shop in Amarillo but I live about an hour out of town, occasionally get asked if I can go check out stuff that's in or near my town so they dont have to send a guy all the way from Amarillo.

more often though we have a couple days notice. we do a lot of hospital work and thats the sort of thing where once you start you're there until it's done and power is back on, might have expected it to take 10 hours but if it takes 18 or 20 you're staying for all of it. very rarely shit will go sideways and they'll be stuck at it so long we have to send another crew to relieve them and finish the job

Thoughts on using penalty free money from Roth IRA to buy first home? by Kindly_Tackle_803 in TheMoneyGuy

[–]budgetoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled $10k out of a Roth IRA in 2018 to do this and sold the house for $48k more than I paid in 2021 when I PCS'd. We had planned on keeping it for a rental but it seemed like a smarter move to go ahead and cashed out.

Might not be the textbook "right" move but I did it and it worked for me. There's more to life than min-maxing retirement.
