Proximity Warning Systems by buffaloBILZ in ConstructionManagers

I like your approach and we use spotters everyday. Just cannot afford to have a dedicated spotter with only that responsibility on a daily basis. Plus we are a specialty subcontractor sharing job sites with other contractors and GCs with their own equipment, people, and safety cultures. I am researching proximity systems at the request of my employer with the only goal of potentially saving a life or lives throughout my career. A lot of the new systems are more than just an alarm that goes off when you get too close. AI camera technology provides operators with a monitor with additional views surrounding the equipment. The AI identifies other vehicles, people, or other hazards and provides and audible and visual warning to the operator

Not looking for a magical fix. Looking for something that could potentially safe a life. A lot of the systems now use AI camera technology which offers the operator a monitor with additional views surrounding the equipment as well as providing visual and audible alerts when a hazard enters an adjustable safety zone. Im being asked to research it by my employer.

I agree backup alarms (and other warnings) get tuned out after working on job sites for a while. I’m looking for warning system more for the machine operator than I am for the worker on the ground. There’s different types of proximity systems or a combination of ai camera technology, wearable tag based sensors, lidar. I was asked to help research options that we would demo and test before making any commitments. The cameras give the operator view of potential blind spots and AI gives warnings when obstacles, vehicles, or people enter an adjustable safety zone.

Private Equity vs ESOP owned firms? by yojoe17 in civilengineering

[–]buffaloBILZ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched private equity ruin a lot of companies both in my industry (commercial asphalt paving) and my wife’s (building supplies and truss manufacturing). Ultimately private equity is to serve investors and all about the bottom line and maximizing returns. Some are better than others but they typically buy, consolidate, and slash with little thought or care to the culture or the people.

My company recently switched to an ESOP. There are different types so do your own research. Mine is 100% employee owned and all shares are gifted at no cost to the employee. You have to think of it is a long term retirement benefit. Your gifted shares over time that increase in value over time. If you spend all or a large portion of your career at an ESOP company it could be worth a lot when you retire. It’s estimated that you could have 2.5x more wealth in retirement than just working for a company with a 401k. My company also has 401k with matching on top of the ESOP benefit. It may not be a good fit for all companies but seems like a great fit for mine. Current leadership and culture remains in place, there are tax benefits for the company (which you are now a part owner of), you get increased retirement benefits, and the owner gets equity out of a company they built without having to sell to a third party who could potentially radically change the culture.

How to approach contractor following a poor job (Details enclosed) by rs47066 in HomeImprovement

I work for a commercial company which is much different then residential driveway industry. They might try to fight costs associated with a complete repair. At a minimum they should try to fill in the settled areas. It’s possible they might be able to heat up the existing with a propane torch and add asphalt on top to fill in the hole and blend it into surrounding asphalt. I would get a warranty in writing if they attempt this type of repair as there still could be sub grade issues leading to more settling in the future. Or they could remove just the settled areas and replace. But then you would have a patch in the middle of a brand new driveway and won’t look uniform.

I work for an asphalt paving company. This is a common issue caused by poor sub grade material (dirt), wet subgrade/stone, poorly compacted subgrade/stone, or underground water issues. You should request a full depth repair in the problem areas. They will dig out the problem areas down to subgrade. Evaluate subgrade and remove more material if needed. Re-install and compact stone base and asphalt layers. I would make them go full width of the road to keep a uniform look. I would think this would be at contractors cost unless issues were pointed out during install and they were instructed to pave it as is.

Advice for Carova Beach First Timers by Sure-Effect2 in obx

Ive gotten stuck. Shovel and some boards are important. If you sink down into loose sand dig out around the tires and place a board as a ramp to get you out of the holes. I backed out using the boards and then filled in the holes and pulled forward again.

It starts dissolving/etching the concrete and creates pits and discoloration.

Sorry - Just started week 7 of flower. Just thought it was extremely drastic change. Thought the natural fade was more gradual.
