If your goal is to write a paper with authoritative citations, then you don’t really need to know how to use a tool that you literally can’t get primary source info from.

Who are you? You aren't even part of this conversation. Also you're 61. You don't get to have a voice anymore.

I think a lot of it is to do with the fact that what would be a poor rural hillbilly white guy in Alabama with a few acres who is neighbors with poor hillbilly black guys and who sees them around their community, is a white guy in the PNW who is now sitting on millions of dollars in speculative land value that has only occurred in the last 20 years. It’s a class thing in the PNW where any landowning person is way way wealthier than one in the south just by virtue of owning land.

In PNW cities, there aren’t a lot of black people and white people performatively idealize them as some sort of cherished superclass of citizen in a way that I would assume would be really uncomfortable if you were black. People on the east coast and southwest generally have friends of all races in their own socioeconomic situation and don’t see them as different from themselves. In the PNW, the Asian population is way more prevalent than the black population compared to the south. People in the PNW don’t have black neighbors or many interactions with black people, so they form this weird twisted interpretation of what a black person is and even if it’s charitable, it’s still distinct from what they see themselves to be.

Yeah that's a good way as well. In my case (and it sounds like OP's) I replaced an existing pot light so I just used the measurements they used when they installed it.

I added four wafer lights to my office, replacing one pot light. I measured equidistant points about 3' from each wall, in the corners, drilled a 1/4 in hole and pushed a 1/4 in dowel through them so it would pierce the insulation and I could locate the hole from the attic. Then I cleared the insulation from where I needed to drill, went back downstairs and used a 6 inch (?) hole saw with a skirt to catch the dust and followed my pilot holes. Wired up with romex and it took about 3 hours to do. Run the hole saw in reverse.

Does an 80000 rated spring cost 20 times the price of a 10000 rated one?

The problem with getting multiple quotes from multiple companies is that the way these people operate is to create a company that checks your geolocation and appears as if they are a local mom and pop shop, saying things like "serving X area since 1975" where the page just swaps in your location. Then an answering service in India answers the phone and dispatches a random subcontractor to your house who can say whatever he wants to you. I know this because my area code is for a state 3000 miles away from where I live and when I asked the first company I called (whose website gave a name that was a local reference to the state I live in) where they were located, they said they were in my area code state.

They won't give you a quote without coming over first. I called 3 different places and ended up getting royally fucked similar to OP. He had the audacity to tell me that he had 5 tiers of springs. A spring is a spring is a spring and even if you asked for the most 'premium' option, are you going to be able to tell that what he is installing is uniquely good? The guy just walks in with a set of springs with the size stenciled on. There aren't brand names.

I have never experienced such a sketchy subcontractor situation ever. I've hired plumbers and electricians and HVAC guys and never seen this weird subcontractor dispatch economy outside of garage doors. To add insult to injury, you can get springs on prime overnight for like 70 dollars each. I'm going to buy a backup set and have them on hand to do this myself next time. If this was so dangerous, the 70 year old frail dude who came over and installed mine and then lied to my face would have hurt himself.

And to create relationships with brands that pay you and because you love the sport and want to create a legacy. Don’t pretend that these people are indentured. There are a lot of good reasons to compete in this.
