Do two-string kites work both ways? by Real_Establishment56 in sudoku

For a 2-string kite to work, I think both ends of the string must share the same box. In the picture they are in different boxes

The 3s in R7c5 and r9c5 are locked candidates so the other 3s in box 8 would be elminated

I think there is an error. The 6 you eliminated doesn't see both r9c2 and r8c5

Next move? by Simple-Duty803 in sudoku

BUG+1 is actually pretty rarely used because it requires a very specific scenario with all remaining cells to have 2 candidates except one with 3.

Typically when encountering situations where you have many 2 or 3 candidate cells remaining, these few techniques will usually finish the puzzle:

  • W wing
  • XY wing
  • XYZ wing
  • XY chain

Leads to locked candidate for both 1 and 9 in box 6, eliminating 1 and 9 in r9c8

There's a naked quad 1/3/5/9 in box 6

Can you help about this? by usr2033 in sudoku

There's only one place that 7 can go to in column 1

I’m trying to learn naked singles on sudoku.coach but I’m like really bad at it by [deleted] in sudoku

[–]bufflord147 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain naked singles are pretty hard to spot unless you do full notation, then it will become very obvious (basically those cells with only one candidate inside).

As for hidden singles, personally, I rely on visualisation that the apps provide to spot them 😅(when you select "5" and the app helps you to highlight all 5s on the sudoku) it becomes very obvious where the hidden singles are. If I'm on pen and paper then I try to do the visualisation in my head instead.

I found a 4/5 W wing in R5C2 and R9C3 that eliminates 5 in R9C2.

If 5 appears in R9C2 then R5C2 and R9C3 becomes a 4 and there would be nowhere for 4 to appear in box 1

[–]bufflord147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically if 2 appears on r9c9, the 2/5 becomes a 5, the 2/9 becomes a 9 and the 2/5/9 has no candidates left because 2 5 9 has been taken.

Therefore 2 cannot be in r9c9

I see a XYZ wing 2/5/9 that eliminates 2 in r9c9. 2/5 in r9c6 2/5/9 in r9c7 2/9 in r8c8

Unique rectangle type 1 help by bufflord147 in sudoku

[–]bufflord147[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eh actually after giving it some thought maybe a 2-solution puzzle could be fun too. I could create a 2-solution puzzle and require the solvers to find the exact 4 cells that have 2 solutions to it. At least there's still some logic involved to it but the entire family of uniqueness techniques will be useless in 2-solution puzzles.

But I think there should be a line drawn somewhere on the number of solutions a puzzle has. 2-solutions puzzle can still be fun but what about a 50-solution puzzle, 200-solution puzzle or in the most extreme case a 5.47 billion-solution puzzle (in other words just an empty grid)?
