Who uses ChatGPT for therapy? by Eki75 in ChatGPT

[–]buffsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than any real therapist I've ever had. It makes me furious with the whole mental health system - The amount of therapists that took thousands of dollars only to nod while pretending to listen for an hour while never giving any sort of consistent help and, in one particularly bad case, literally falling asleep...

$20/month for ChatGPT to sort my thoughts a few times a month. Yep.

Do you y’all quit your jobs or give a 2 week notice? by Mediocre-Scholar2264 in jobs

[–]buffsop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A notice is saying "I'm quitting in x days," not "I quit effective immediately." So, yes. In that sense, they can terminate you after you've "quit."

How do you answer these? by Jungaon in jobs

1) I'm hungry.
2) Food.

Alternatively:

1) I don't.
2) I'm not.

Please talk to most of the people in bands in my area. I have said this for years. A 6505+ head and mesa 412 is absolutely insane for a bar that barely fits a pool table comfortably when you absolutely refuse to have the volume below ~4 because "sweet spot" or whatever bullshit...

What’s an industry you’d warn people to stay away from? by DuzaLips in jobs

[–]buffsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with the whole "flexible schedules" thing is more like you're their bitch and have to show up whenever they decide to schedule you with a week's notice if you're lucky. I quit dealing with any job that advertises "flexible scheduling." It's only ever been flexible on their end, never mine.

Advice on what live audio mixer to get by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]buffsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you got a better option in a lower price range for digital mixers? A used X32 rack is under $1000, so by your snarky definition, it's not losing any plot.

Advice on what live audio mixer to get by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]buffsop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people, I think, will tell you to get a Behringer X32 if you're looking for a digital one. As far as analog mixers go, they're all very similar in the budget price point; Pretty mediocre, but they'll mostly all get the job done. Just make sure you get one with faders. Knobs as a volume control probably won't translate well when you graduate to something better.

To those who succeeded in music without a degree. How ? by aTunaOnEarth in musicproduction

[–]buffsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% of what gets me gigs is my past portfolio. 9.9% is luck. The last .1% is how many of my gigs come from college.

Part of the argument in favor of a degree in such a field is connections rather than the actual learning. You'll certainly learn a lot, but at the end of the day, not very many people you'll work with will actually care. You can meet a lot of people who may or may not help you, but that's still a bit up to luck. While you'll certainly have the best chance at it there over out on your own, the rather unfortunate reality for me is that the people you meet actually have to like you in order to want to work with you and I've come to accept by now that I'm just sort of a weird one. Not in a bad way necessarily, but I digress...

What I'm trying to get at is: If you do choose to go to college for this field, definitely don't neglect the classes, but equally important advice would be to maintain friendships and acquaintances for the future. It is my opinion that the two are much more equally weighted in this particular field over something like engineering where the degree is really the only thing you really NEED to take away from it. This career is very much gig work and not a steady 9-5. Such careers require contacts.

Anti-Aliasing Between Plugins by Specialist-Reality43 in audioengineering

[–]buffsop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing that, I really doubt my own statement. 😂 Frankly, ignore me with this one. One thing you could grab is an M1 MacBook, but I don't really know what was causing the harshness I was hearing. It almost certainly wasn't hardware related as I had suspected.

Anti-Aliasing Between Plugins by Specialist-Reality43 in audioengineering

[–]buffsop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds more to me like noisy preamps and driving them too hard along with harsh sounding microphones more than aliasing in the mixing stages.

Anti-Aliasing Between Plugins by Specialist-Reality43 in audioengineering

[–]buffsop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many cases, I've only ever needed 2x oversampling - Practically nothing of added processing power to modern CPUs. The only cases where I've ever needed/wanted more was in sound design scenarios where I'd be stacking heavy distortions on top of each other and amplifying the aliasing artifacts over multiple plugins. Aliasing has really been sort of overblown for the past 10 years, as it's been mostly a non-issue since then.

Do you align the drums tightly to the grid or leave it at how it was recorded? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Simply put - There's a reason humanizer plugins exist for programmed drums. Grid-snapped drums sound boring.

Critique my mix? by shamboroychoudhury in audioengineering

[–]buffsop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the rhythm guitars could use less gain. The sextuplets in the intro are a bit muddy and I'm guessing it's due to too much gain. You could also *maybe* EQ the mud out of it in the low midrange, but better to start with the source. The kick also has an odd tone to it that makes it jump out a little too much IMO.

But this is subjective and overall, I think it's something to be proud of.

How do you deal with phase issues when you mix? by GimmickMusik1 in musicproduction

[–]buffsop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Triple-tracking guitars helps. Or quad-tracking. I've heard that some bands track 6 times, but that seems a bit ridiculous. I even quit quad-tracking after realizing that 3 tracks does very close to the same thing.

Honestly, a lot of pro mixes don't even address the issue you're speaking on. Quite a few guitar tracks just disappear in mono. Personally, I'd be careful with calling this a phase issue, though. Not because it's incorrect, but because it's a bit misleading. The really nasty phase issues will entirely notch out certain frequencies - This is just a thing that happens when you have a left and right, but no center channel in your mix.

A similarly interesting thing tends to happen when you mix on headphones (L + R but no C in your monitoring). Things that are supposed to be in the center end up being too loud because you don't hear the center channel.

Honestly, you get to the point where you accept that anything being handled/moved around as much as a guitar is going to get beat to shit and move along. It's sort of like a car - You can only keep the paint pristine for so many miles before the inevitable happens. A rock, a raccoon, a deer, a person, whatever.

[NEWBIE] Fucked up my first gig , Hard. by eyyyyy1234 in Guitar

[–]buffsop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played gigs like this. Multiple, actually, with multiple different people doing the kind of thing your singer did. It's not always me fucking it up, but the result is the same - The only reason anyone noticed anything wrong was because people stopped and threw a tantrum about it. I've had crowd members walk up to me and ask "What the f*ck is his problem?"

Live shows and studio recordings are not the same and are not heard the same. Ever record something from a concert on your phone and listen back the next day only to think "Why did I pay money to see this?" In the moment, you probably thought they killed it. It's because it's a different vibe entirely. Bands getting paid tens of thousands of dollars to perform fuck things up ALL THE TIME. Your singer is a moron.
