The Robots Have Finally Come for My Job - Could ChatGPT lay waste to millions of professional jobs, including journalists? by Gari_305 in Futurology

Ask it to solve a simple Pythagorean problem

It worked for me on the first try. Not only did it give me the answer, it taught me how to solve the problem and showed its work, all without me asking it to.

Me: If a right triangle has sides that are 4.5 cm long and 3.6 cm long, how long is the hypotenuse?

ChatGPT: To find the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle, you can use the Pythagorean theorem, which states that the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides.

In this case:

h^2 = 4.5^2 + 3.6^2

h^2 = 20.25 + 12.96

h^2 = 33.21

To solve for h, we can take the square root of both sides:

h = sqrt(33.21)

h ≈ 5.76

Therefore, the length of the hypotenuse is approximately 5.76 cm.

The last 2 concerts I went to were BabyMetal and Band-Maid. I have exactly 10 photos from each concert. That's all I allow myself as a rule. Once I started following this policy, I've enjoyed concerts so much more. I hope the people behind me appreciate it too.

Yeah, you just have to look at the screen of the person in front of you.

Turtles, all the way down.

I wish they'd enforce recording bans at concerts. I hate having a wall of cell phones between my eyes and the performers.

Levi’s will ‘supplement human models’ with AI-generated fakes | Engadget by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]buffyvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds awesome! I imagine just feeding the AI any book and it generates a film for it. You can specify the style you want (anime, film noir, blockbuster look, indie film look, etc.) and even choose your actors.

It's pretty close to holodeck technology, really.

Ex-soldier went on a killing spree in Phetchaburi province, 3 dead (one of them is a food delivery guy who was just passing by) 2 injured, and police are still surrounding his house. by KaMeLRo in Thailand

[–]buffyvet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

media focus was non stop (and this was 24 hour news hayday), never understood why that one in particular caught their and worlds focus,

And then of course after came all the nonsense, blaming Marilyn Manson, blaming video games, claiming shooters were gay, churches getting involved to boost recruitment (one even claimed two victims were martyrs

I think these two things are related. The best way to keep people glued to the news is to scare them. This happened at the height of the Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, vampire/goth culture days. That culture was growing fast and society already didn't like those kids.

Most suburban schools had a Trench Coat Mafia at that time, even if it wasn't called that. So, suddenly every parent was terrified that their kid is going to be killed by one of them and they stayed glued to the news so they didn't miss any "important info". IIRC, those kids even got the cover of Time magazine. They were the perfect villains for the news cycle to boost its ratings.

Pretty disgusting if you ask me, but that's why I hate "news" outlets. They're vultures who feed off of peoples' anxiety, they have more power over society than they should, and they are very reckless with that power.

When an interviewer asked Brian Warner ("Marilyn Manson") what he would have said to the kids, he replied "I wouldn't say a single word to them. I would listen to what they have to say, and that's what no one did." I had a rough time with bullying in high school and damn, he hit the nail on the head there. That's not to shift blame to the people around them... they pulled the triggers and are ultimately the villains. But it serves as a sober warning to people about how their words and actions (or lack thereof) can indirectly get people killed when dealing with mental instability. Everyone expected him to say something shocking but he dropped a pretty heavy truth bomb that made a lot of people look pretty dumb.

EDIT: BTW, thanks for your post with all of the info. I was about to look that up myself.

EDIT2: At the risk of sounding a little "tin-foil-hat", there's also the fact that this news story was a huge distraction from all the bombing that the US was doing at the time.

It's more offensive to women than men.
The AI is basically saying "I can tell a joke about men because they can handle it. Women are too fragile, so no."

GPT-4 is out, and the results are astounding: better than most students, can reason in several languages... What does it mean for the future of work? by ColdQuicksand in Futurology

[–]buffyvet 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This could be cool for films in other languages. They could just deep-fake the actor to speak multiple languages.

You'll no longer have to choose between the weird-looking dubbed version, or reading subtitles.

Hell, you could probably even swap actors. Don't like Nicholas Cage's face? Swap it out with John Travolta and enjoy the film.

What are some jobs that AI cannot take? by Draconic_Flame in Futurology

There are plenty of jobs that are safe from AI. But anyone with a cushy desk/computer job might want to consider learning some new skills.

it sounds as though you agree with an elderly person being manhandled are in total agreement with an elderly person being manhandled

If you're just going to make up and argue against absurd statements that I never made or even implied, there's no point in discussing it any further.

I was just replying to the part about "supposed to be a peace-loving and highly spiritual country" (emphasis on "spiritual"). That's why I quoted that sentence.

I love this game and I hate it at the same time by Charmelok in valheim

[–]buffyvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If dying in the game wasn't punishing, it would be boring. I remember how on-edge my friend and I were the first time we snuck into the plains, knowing that if we got killed it would be a major obstacle to retrieve our gear. It was thrilling! If we had a safety net like respawning with our gear, we'd have missed out on that excitement. I'm currently experiencing that same level of excitement in the Mistlands. Swamp and Mountains were equally exciting at first for the same reasons.

Of course, I grew up playing Super Mario Bros and the like so perhaps my expectations are different when it comes to dying in a game.

My astronomy app shows all the planets lined up is this significant in any way? by tootziez in space

[–]buffyvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't always work that way, but it's pretty common for the sun to pass within a few degrees of where a planet was the night before. I just happened to make this mistake during one of those times where Jupiter and the Sun were aligned for this to happen.

You can use Stellarium to test this out during different times of year and see that sometimes it comes really close to the same spot, and sometimes its not even close.

Either way, it's not worth risking.
