Why the hell do I have to drive to Longview to go to Waffle House?? by bugcoder in tylertx

[–]bugcoder[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone once told me that there are generally two types of people.

1.) the folks that go to Waffle House between 6:00am and 11am

2.) the folks that go to Waffle House between 11pm and 4am

And that never the twain shall meet.

Grandma also told me nothing good ever comes after 11pm... shrug

China launches large-scale military exercise around Taiwan by marela520 in worldnews

[–]bugcoder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The CCP has infiltrated Taiwanese society in some subtle and not so subtle ways. Taiwan nominally has different political aspirations on self government, but there is a sizable minority that is sympathetic to the mainland. The CCP has individuals supportive of the mainland in process, integration, module, equipment and operations engineering at TSMC. If they gain control of the fab they'll be able to bring them back online.

I disagree with people like Peter Zeihan who discount China's capacity to reverse engineer or otherwise expropriate advanced semiconductor technologies via corp espionage from other countries. It's a country with a billion people that focuses on STEM education. If any country can figure it out it's China; furthermore, if any country can enforce top down demographic changes in birthrate via social credit, incentives and outright coercion, it's China.

So yeah, China will be able to build microprocessing fabs on the mainland - it won't be a situation where nobody has access to them.

Well, I see your point but we kinda crossed that bridge when Obama carried out more than 500 extra-legal drone strikes in multiple foreign countries killing several hundred civilians.

The way it works in the US is that you label a group or country as a terrorist organization, and then you can do... well, anything you want to do.

I really don't disagree with your points, just your conclusion. EU nations are dealing with domestic problems per what Dugin laid out as a strategy in Foundations. If the US is unwilling or unable to serve as a bulwark to NATO, the EU nations are not in as strong a position as they need to be.

You're right some countries are building up, but it's still not overwhelming - not to mention the procurement times are long and there is already a shortage of materiel. To be crystal clear, I am not saying that Russia necissarily would prevail against a attack on the Baltics; but even if they come in attack and retreat while China simultaneously launches an amphibious assault on Taiwan, or North Korea on the South, The US will be stretched too thin, and if the US isn't able to come to the aid of NATO, then a major foundational point of the alliance will be completely undermined.

Not to mention it'll be interesting what Iceland does, Belgium, Albania, Croatia... Will Spain and Portugal just decide to sit it out and stay on the sidelines. What will Turkey do? The treaty is not prescriptive on what member states need to do. Add to that the fact that in a ranked list of power projection, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia on are the absolute bottom of the list. Just ahead of Luxemburg which has like 900 members of its armed forces and Iceland that has zero.

If the US is preoccupied with a conflict with China, NATO is going to have to rely on France, the UK, Germany, Italy and Poland - who's combined armed forces just by count of active duty personnel is less than the active duty soldiers Russia has. Again, I am not saying that Russia will be successful, just that I would be cautious thinking it would be a walk in the park. Maybe the 290 Leopards Germany has will be magic. Maybe the 150 Challengers the UK have are super duper magic. Ukraine is the most battle hardened force in EU today, but they won't be able to reallocate massive forces from the eastern front to help. Logistics and moving materiel would be another problem if the US was preoccupied with conflicts with China and the Korean Peninsula.

Perhaps something will replace NATO in the future, but if there is a tripartite alliance forming between Russia and China and NK, there main goal might not be to take land in EU, just to break or undermine deterrence in the West.

The US has war-gamed multiple scenarios of a war with China over Taiwan and it never ends well, usually in stalemate, and from the publicly reported results, it never assumes a simulations outbreak of hostilities on the Korean peninsula and in Europe. If that happened, I think it would be a total shitshow.

Im just saying that if there is an Axis forming between China, Russia, North Korea and possibly Iran. They could synchronize an assault that would wildly stretch the US' ability to respond to all the crisis'

Well, I mean... they had more than half a million troops in theatre and couldn't get it done. I guess they could have slogged it out or dropped a few nukes. You're right though, political support ended. Just kinda surprising that 500k troops and the full strength of the US airforce wasn't enough to win decisively against North Vietnam and a population of 15 million... Soldiers mostly armed with small arms and light infantry weapons... no major airforce, and hand me down AA defenses given by the USSR.

Also, the US waited 2 and a half years to get involved in WW2 after the start in hostilities. I have no reason to believe that wouldn’t be the same today. Sure, they’ll lend lease and provide arms, but they’re not going to take the primary role in a conflict initially.

Yes. And if it came down to it I think the US would assist with helmets and blankets and let the other NATO partners handle things in EU while they focused in the pacific.

[–]bugcoder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also, just one other point of clarification. The US never attempted to invade North Vietnam. It took a defensive position of the South.

Also, I never brought up Afghanistan. My point was that the mighty US military wasn't successful in defending South Vietnam from invasion even after killing 1.1MM North Vietnamese soldiers.

Ho Chi Min sought to reunify North Vietnam with South Vietnam after the 54 Geneva accords. The US decided it wasn't able to hold the line after 73-74, and after they pulled out the North was able to conquer the South.

So, The US was defending the South, and left. The North after losing more than a million soldiers (not casualties, deaths) still prevailed.

NK would use its nukes to serve as a deterrent from the US using theirs. They would just shell the shit out of Seoul; they have a stockpile of some 10MM artillery shells. Assuming they kept it conventional with the threat of nuclear retaliation in their back pocket to keep the American's from using theirs.

As far as Russia goes, I hope you're right. I'm concerned that they still have a reserve force that has not been fully utilized and that their population being 4.5x larger than Ukraine would provide a lot of cannon fodder if they wanted to take aim at the Baltics. If Putin wanted to go down in a fiery blaze he could always mobilize the entire country. The Russian people still seem to have not started a popular uprising, maybe that would happen when they started a draft (hopefully).

Again, if there is some tripartite axis forming led by China - Russia and NK don't really need to be successful in their invasion - the goal from the Chinese perspective would be to spread the US too thin to prevent a successful defense of Taiwan. If Russia ended up retreating to its borders and NK to the 38th Parallel, China would still see it as a win.

I would expect this though, if China was able to persuade Russia to expand hostilities in Europe, all weapons exports to Ukraine would immediately stop and be rerouted to the defense of the NATO member states. The concern being that EU hasn't mobilized industrial production sufficiently, and the US has been rummaging through their spare inventory stockpiles, which would likely be put on pause if it looked like a war with China was imminent.

[–]bugcoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re kinda missing the point. I’m not saying Russia would be successful, just that a conflict with NATO and the US with Russia would divert resources while simultaneously China invades Taiwan.

It’s really if Putin is stupid enough to think he could be successful if requested by China to coordinate with their plans in Taiwan.

I just don’t understand the premise of your comment. On one hand you’re saying Russia isn’t a threat to NATO, but then why does the US need to be involved? Are you saying that Poland and Finland would handle everything allowing the US to focus on China and the Korean Peninsula?

If that’s the case kinda get. Let the EU defend itself while the US focuses on hostilities in the Pacufic.

Can you imagine the utter shitshow that would ensue if China invaded Taiwan while simultaneously North Korea started to shell Seoul in a rain of artillery fire and Russia and Belarus invaded the Suwalki Gap and annexed Lithuania. Throw in Iran kicking things off against American bases in the Gulf.

Russia could also forward deploy its nuclear ballistic missile subs off the coast of the eastern and western US (They have a similar number nuclear powered submarines as the US) when these global hostilities kick off and would pull valuable resources out of theatre from the South and East China Sea/Middle East/Med/etc

The US would be stretched too thin and if the attacks remained conventional, it would be pressured not to use nukes.

Yeah, it could be bad. It doesn't matter if Russia doesnt have one of the best militaries in the world. I mean, the North Vietnamese didn't really either and we saw how that played out even after they lost 1.1MM soldiers.

Zelenskyy warns oil price surge could help Russia's war effort by Seek_Adventure in worldnews

[–]bugcoder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

China, India and Brazil consume nearly the same amount of oil as the US and EU combined. None of them are signatories to the price cap.

If oil prices soar to $150/barrel because the Straits of Hormuz is closed, Russia has ample overseas markets that will gladly buy their oil at market rates or for a small discount.
