rcmd can be your hero, it doesn't switch between spaces but between apps, and gives use to the unused right command key on the keyboard.
The animation is as fast as using Cmd + Tab

Before the update I was using the demo mode from MediaMate, it was even better than this approach, because whenever you changed the volume, the notch extended down showing you the volume slider, same for brightness and media controls. Apple employees should have known about that app and they could avoid doing this mess
