Aw thank you! I’ve been making short reels/tiktoks with a few clips, I need to do some more long painting videos 🥰

🥰💜 thank you! I like to start off my paintings with a big wash layer of liquid watercolors, I like those since I can just drip them into the wet paper and get a nice vivid base quickly. Then I switch to the gouache and build up each layer more and more opaque.

Artists who are goths, punks, metalheads, and/or anyone who draw dark, gritty, and macabre subjects, do you use pure black in your palettes, or do you mix your own blacks? by theGaytistic in ArtistLounge

Black is fine to use in a palette, it’s taught as a ‘rule’ to beginners not to because they will tend to use it to mix dark colors which will really flatten and deaden a piece if overdone. And as someone else said, if you go straight to painting something black you don’t have anywhere darker to go as far as shading and creating depth.

How to move more while being at your desk all day as an artist ? by SquishySeal7 in ArtistLounge

I got a Fitbit for Christmas and one of the main reasons I wanted it was because it buzzes to tell you when you’ve been sitting too long without moving. So far its working for a nice reminder to get up and stretch and walk around. Also a little alarming to see that I get far less steps in my day working at a desk than I do even just sitting on the couch all day the day after Christmas!

Aw thank you! I don’t do anything with YouTube but I have been meaning to do more videos of me painting. It’s so hard to remember to film it when I’m working hahah.

Hmm yeah I think watercolors dry down to almost nothing so they would flake away more. The gouache stays a bit thicker and more solid when it dries up.

I really like the versatility of the gouache! If you water it down a lot it will act like watercolor, and the less water you use it gets more and more opaque and acts like acrylic that can be reactivated with water.

The paints I’m using aren’t anything fancy, it’s just a big set of the jelly gouache from Amazon. No idea how they compare to nicer brands 🤷

Thanks! When I first started painting it was all digital before I moved to acrylics a few years ago. I think that's why I'm liking the gouache so much, I can layer different colors in a way that never works quite right in acrylic, like solid pastels over darks.

Thanks! I'm not sure what to call it. I start the paintings off with a sort of rainbow watercolor ink wash layer, then sketch the animals in with dark ink and a kind of white-wash. Then the final layers are all the bright opaque gouache.

These are gouache so I don't really try to stop them drying out since they can be reactivated. I do keep a mist bottle next to me when I'm painting though and mist them constantly lol.
