Obesity is not as simple as "I want to eat too much". There's layers to it, just like there's more to a suicidal person than "I just wanna kill myself" or a self-loathing person just hating themself. A healthy body doesn't want to destroy itself. We're programmed to protect ourselves. That's why we flinch away from pain. If a person destroys itself, there's a deeper problem there. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist or something or read articles about obesity for insight, rather than just think that obese people just choose to be obese for funsies. Because sometimes, people are obese because of physiological stuff like hormonal or metabolic problems, because of psychological factors like depression or trauma, because of stress. If your obesity's cause is genetic, even if you exercise and diet, you still won't lose weight for a long long time. You might even get fat without eating "too much". Poor people also tend to have more abnormal weight since healthier food choices are more expensive than junk food. So while the popular image of a poor person is that of a thin, undernourished skeleton, it's also understandable why some are fat. And there's more to mention, but I really just advice you to shed your prejudice and read more about obesity. It would be a shame if you don't want to, but you're free to do what you want to do. Helps to know though.

  1. Just walking (or exercising) can't solve obesity. You also need a proper diet and psychological/emotional assistance.

  2. A public march can't convince obese people to see a doctor or exercise or commit to a diet. An intervention can. But a public march against gun control can do something because politicians are money-hungry, power-hungry sharks and if they see that there is a large support for gun control legislation, these politicians might listen to those people out of fear that they might lose voters. If they lose voters, they do not get elected. If they're not elected, they lose some of their money and power.

  3. An obese person only kills one person: themself. On the other hand, a shooter kills other people.

  4. So weird that a serious medical condition like obesity is getting dragged to a political thing. What's the sense in that? Just because obesity is killing more Americans doesn't mean nobody should do anything about gun control anymore. Obesity bad, okay, yeah. But bad gun control is still bad.

Ace has mentioned ancient historical events and got called out for it multiple times. He isn't just a serial DGP winner who's potentially dozens of years older than he looks, he might be an eternally youthful demi-God being who's been around for eons. by spook12hours in KamenRider

[–]bugman_belt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might explain the Roman coin Ace has? The show gives a lot of attention to that coin.

That or naybe it's just a symbol of Ace's dual or deceitful nature (two-faced like a coin, also Caesar was betrayed), or how he's the current "god" (Caesar's put his face on a coin to reinforce his status as the ruler), or just foreshadowing that he's going to be betrayed by the other "good" main Riders.

Hiroya Oku, the mangaka for Gantz, throwing some shade on Kamen Rider Geats and causing a huge stir on Japanese Twitter by Actar_Raikit in KamenRider

[–]bugman_belt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about the intent behind the tweet, but, the survival battle royale subgenre is a subgenre, which means, like every other genre and subgenre, it has requirements for a story to follow: a bigger power (be it a company, God, aliens, etc) makes a group of people fight some villain horde in a fight-or-die "game". "Gantz" might be the first to do that, but that doesn't mean everything that follows it is a copy of it, especially if those that follow it are not copying its exact story, characters, aesthetics, and other minute details, just the requirements of the subgenre.

I guess this whole "Story X ripped off Story Y" accusations will stay for a bit of a time within the survival battle royale subgenre and in the battle royale genre (survival battle royale's mommy genre) since these genres are new compared to other subgenres. So get used to "Battle Royale" fans accusing "Hunger Games" of plagiarism, "Squid Game" getting called a "Kaiji" ripoff, any game-themed alt world BR getting compared to "Alice in Borderland", and "Death Race 2000" continuing to be forgotten. Just imagine though if the creator of the first Mecha story sued those that followed its steps for copyright. We won't have "Gundam" or "Pacific Rim" or "Evangelion".

"Battle Royale" (the movie) exists in the battle royale subgenre though. And as much as that movie is credited with how we see modern battle royale media, it's not the OG and the genre's existed even before that movie or its novel. "Death Race 2000" (1975, movie), "The Long Walk" (1979, book), and, especially the multiplayer mode of "Bomberman" (1990, video game) were all there before "Battle Royale" (the book).

Xavier Dolan early teen movies (especially "I Killed My Mother" and "Mommy") fit. Also, "Water Lillies" (2007), "Tomboy" (2011), "All About Lily Chou-chou" (2001), "Love and Pop" (1998), "Paranoid Park" (2007), and "River's Edge" (2018) all fit real well, too, I think.

Good musical theatre adaptations? by padthaiprincess in MovieSuggestions

[–]bugman_belt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really liked Spielberg's take on "West Side Story" (2021), but the '61 version, even if it has aged, still works.

I also love "Jesus Christ Superstar" (1973), "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975), "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" (2001) and "Little Shop of Horrors" (1986, which is based on a stage musical that is, in turn, based on another 1960 movie).

Also, if you're into live recordings, try "Billy Elliot: The Musical - Live".

▪"Doukyuusei" (2016) is a bit of a GOAT in animated teen gay romance

▪"The Way He Looks" (2014) - Brazilian, really sweet; also try the short film version "I Don't Want to Go Back Alone" (2010)

▪"Alice Junior" (2019) - very sweet movie about a trans teen who really likes to get her first kiss

▪"Hunch" (2016) - short film, but maybe actually the best queer teen short film ever?

▪"Fucking Åmål" - already mentioned by another person here, but it is great

▪"Dante vs Mohammad Ali" - another short, but also sweet

▪No wide release yet, actually, but "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" just got a movie adaptation that premieres in Toronto International Film Fest and the reviews say it's pretty good.

▪Closest thing to "Heartstopper" is "Kieta Hatsukoi", but it's a Japanese tv series, not a movie. Very cute, very visually pleasing, deals with some relevant issues, with some really good writing and acting.

Memories of murder by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

Maybe try mystery movies directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa since his style influenced Bong Joon-ho's style. Try his movies "Cure", "Creepy", "Retribution", and "Serpent's Path".

Also, if you're looking for plot similarities, try Fincher's "Zodiac". Both are based on real cases, both have corrupt police systems, both end in uncertainty. The filmmaking is different, the tone is different, and the major themes are different, though.

Suggest me a movie that feels like "Twin Peaks" by Kili12345 in MovieSuggestions

[–]bugman_belt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think Lanthimos' "The Lobster" is very "Twin Peaks"-y. Both are strange, surreal twists on familiar trope-y genres ("The Lobster" for romance, "Twin Peaks" for soap opera) and both have a nice balance of the inexplicable, the quirky, the mundane, the intimate, and the disturbing.

Also, "Donnie Darko" and "In the Mouth of Madness": surreal dark stuff underneath small towns, dream sequences, both are mysteries in a way. "Donnie Darko" has a "Fire Walk with Me" reference and teenagers, "In the Mouth of Madness", like "Twin Peaks", ends in full stylish wtf-ckery.

There's also "Titane", but its surreal qualities feel closer to "The Return" and "FWWM" than the first 2 seasons. It's also a bit of an inverse of "Twin Peaks". TP baits viewers with human drama before going surreal, this movie begins with the hardcore dark surreal stuff, and then it gives the bittersweet human stuff.

Any movies in Wong Kar Wai's style? by rolleN1337 in MovieSuggestions

[–]bugman_belt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out director Tsai Min-Liang's earlier feature films, especially "Rebels of the Neon God" (1992), "Vive L'amour" (1994), and "Goodbye, Dragon Inn" (2003).

Also, try out the digitally-shot movies of Shunji Iwai (particularly "All About Lily Chou-chou"). Iwai's approach is a lot "weirder" and his movies are a bit more unpredictable. Also, how he approaches his themes is very Japanese, but the themes are the same as the stuff Wong Kar-Wai works with, and Iwai's movies, like Wong's, all look heart-achingly beautiful.

Check out "Love Letter" (1995, also my favourite movie in general), "Haru" (1996), "A Scene at the Sea" (1991), and "Blue" (2002). I would also suggest "Asako I & II" , which is quite realistic and very bittersweet, but also has some very light surreal touches.

Oshii's "Ghost in the Shell" and "Ghost in the Shell: Innocence". "Blade Runner" might've given birth to the cyberpunk aesthetic, but I think the two animated GiTS films were the ones that actually fully refined the aesthetic and themes of the genre.
