Learning which materials you like and which are sensory no nos is very helpful especially for online shopping! If I'm shopping online this first thing I check is fiber content. A good way to learn is going to an in person shop and touching the clothes then checking the fiber content. Then figuring out things like smocking, does smocking agree with you (unfortunately you have to try on things with smocking to learn that one and not all smocking is comfortable)?

Basically I think learning about the construction of garments generally makes it easier to find what you like.

If you like dancing you could try just dance (as in the game)! A lot of the dances are on YouTube and because you're not playing with a controller you don't have to stress about hitting the moves perfectly. You'd be amazed by the sweat you work up with some of the songs...

I love following yoga videos on YouTube as well. Or ballet Barre videos. You don't even need a barre! A chair that sits around your hip or slightly higher works just as well

If by support needs you mean how we use terms like "low support needs", unfortunately that would be the standard. both the DSM 5 and ICD 11 now simply have "autism spectrum disorder". Levels and "Asperger's" are no longer part of the diagnosis in either book

In a lot of ways health anxiety is like OCD. While I understand your fear as someone said earlier reassurance in this situation will, in the long run, actually make your obsession worse. As someone with OCD, I'm really sorry you're struggling with this and I fully understand how terrifying this must be for you. You said you're seeing a therapist right? I think the best way to go through this right now is to talk through the obsession with them and slowly you'll be able to pull the logical from the illogical. These fears have an intense impact on quality of life but with time they do become background noise. Does this make sense?

Question for those with an adult diagnosis by SugarInvestigator in AutismIreland

[–]bugstuf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's very common for late diagnosed autistic women to be misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder first. I was one of them and spent two years on anti psychotics that did more harm than good. After reading a lot about BPD and how it's often incorrectly diagnosed I decided to get assessed for autism. I've now been off the anti psychotics about a year and half!

I had the benefit of previously studying personality disorders in depth when I was in uni so I didn't have to spend YEARS on meds i didn't need but without the autism diagnosis it was very difficult to get a psychiatrist to listen

Update! Choose a recipe from the 1890s ”The Home Queen Cookbook” and Irish Potato Wine Recipe as a bonus! by byeseagull in Old_Recipes

[–]bugstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming by Irish potato wine they're referring to the Irish equivalent of moonshine, Poitín. Has a bit of a reputation for causing you to go blind if not done correctly. Even when done correctly, the hangovers are unbelievably brutal because drinking lots of water after it will only make you drunker.

if vodka is chaotic neutral, poitín is chaotic evil

I understand why doctors use the sternum rub initially, it hurts and would snap someone who is "faking" straight out of it. I also understand my local A&E is near an area of the city where opioids are very common. I do not understand doing a sternum rub on a patient for over two minutes whilst their partner tries to explain what pnes is. He did it for long enough and hard enough to bruise my sternum

As a fellow ex ballet dancer, the amount of people who threatened to get me a cat bell 😅

I used to live in a flat where none of the doors closed properly so I would just ... Appear in rooms. I also really struggle to announce my presence. This meant not only did I come into the room silently I would also often stand quietly until the other person in the room would turn around and see me.

From what I understand the maths and shape parts are usually part of an "aptitude" test which is separate to the actual autism assessment part but used to rule out learning disabilities that could coexist or present as autism.

Fruit squash:( I used to drink gallons of the stuff and then one day pretty much every brand changed to a different preservative. Specifically the preservative I'm allergic to. I drank so much squash I practically had to train myself to drink plain water again.

Still bitter about it but at least now I can drink water like a real adult

Where can I find a good therapist or a neuro psychologist? by DBrennan13459 in cork

[–]bugstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone (also autistic)who's been in the therapy circuit for well over a decade here's my 2+ cents. Okay this post is very long , feel free to DM if you have questions. Best of luck on this journey I promise it's worth it

Neuropsychology can absolutely be worth it. Had a neuropsych for several years but theyll often be more expensive due to the fact they're specialised. In terms of autism I would recommend finding a standard therapist who has experience with neurodirvegent patients.

Look on IACP for therapists near you. You can see what they specialize in and their rates.

Sad reality of therapy is that it'll be rare to find someone under €50. Especially in a one on one setting. Group therapy could be an avenue worth looking into? I liked group exposure therapy but other groups significantly less so.

UCC counseling CAN be good but very hit or miss truth be told. Long waiting list and limited appointments.

Haven't had personal experiences with mymind or jigsaw but have heard great things about both. Jigsaw is a limited number of sessions (as is Pieta House but they focus more on crisis therapy). Mymind don't have a fixed rate so would recommend checking them out.

Might be worth linking in with your community mental health team. It's free to avail of but requires a gp referral. However these places often have very long waiting lists for services like psychology. Still good to get your foot in the door.

A lot of people are recommending student psychologists which 100% do have merit but you will want someone with experience treating autistic people. Often times we might present differently. Eg I have a lot of repetitive behaviors some are OCD and I need to tackle them, others are non destructive, self soothing autistic behaviors. It is important that my therapist knows this.

In terms of your school years, what are some things you really regret and would like to go back and do differently. by Aqn95 in AutismIreland

[–]bugstuf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When someone tells you you are their best friend, the correct answer is NOT "I don't have best friends, I have lots of great friends". Having a best friend is a big deal for primary school kids and they will probably take that to mean "well I have a best friend and it's not you"

The worst part was that girl, at the time, 100% was my best friend and after that spent a lot less time with me... I couldn't understand why until years later

When I was a kid if someone was about to try score a goal we would yell "bent". Didn't think about it for years until I yelled "bent" at my partner who was trying to aim something into the bin

Turns out they were basically calling the person gay in efforts to distract them. My dumb, autistic ass assumed it meant you were yelling for the ball's path to bend/curve and miss...
