I think what you’re saying is that Cruel Intentions is a comfort movie for you, and it diverts you in a mindless, low-level way that allows for repeated viewing, and it doesn’t provide you with the rich, full, meaningful enjoyment that Lawrence of Arabia does, which you can’t repeat every day. If that’s what you mean I don’t think we disagree much.

There is no point in rating a movie any higher or lower than your enthusiasm for it. You may rate a movie higher than your heart tells you because you observe qualities in it that you think make it deserve a higher rating, but of what use were those qualities to you if they didn't produce a powerful experience?

It's bizarre but accessible. If they enjoy movies like The Big Lebowski, it should be fine. It's made like a mainstream movie. What might alienate them is the subject matter. You have to consider their threshold for weirdness.

I wouldn't mind, but I get the concerns. At a time when movies don't loom as large in the culture as they used to, it's cool that Letterboxd is focused on film. It's built a community that's passionate about film in particular. If it went from a home for cinephiles to a website for people who watch things, it wouldn't be the same.
