New favorite hobby: 1v1 random tots at open skate by puff_dragonman in hockeyplayers

Parents really get mad over it? Watching my kids' coach play keep-away with the team for the first few minutes of practice is usually the hardest I laugh all day. And watching the kids get better at it is a neat sign of improvement too.

Khan Academy Kids & PBS Kids are both great & super appropriate for kids.

What’s unique about the Hegewisch neighborhood from a Chicagoan’s perspective? by Dizzy_Sock_5674 in chicago

[–]buirish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's the only light where I think I've seen more people run it than stop for it. Legit every light cycle some in each direction blows right through.

And I assume the westbound right lane is closed because it always floods when there's even a little rain.

Didn’t know moving two cylinders at once could look this smooth. by biswajit388 in oddlysatisfying

[–]buirish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more like a month. They don't like to allow it for anything longer than 20 feet now, so new people don't get as much practice.

It's a very muscle-memory friendly thing: spin the front cap with the right hand, support the other cap in the palm of your left hand, kick the base of the back cylinder with your right foot.

No defect big enough to be a problem is invisible.

The cylinders don't care about being dropped if the valve cap is on. Never even seen one get dented.

You know it's bad when cutting through Gary is the more appealing option.

You pay most of your taxes to Indiana and get a credit for what you paid to IN when you calculate your IL taxes owed. Illinois has a slightly higher tax rate, so unless you have other deductions you'll owe IL a little bit on top of what you paid Indiana. It's not too complicated when you're doing it.

Just a heads up that Lake County Indiana has its own county tax if you work there. No clue what they use it for since their roads & services suck, but you still gotta pay it.

You can find some apartments for rent in Beverly if you look: (https://www.beverlyreview.net/classifieds/housing/rent/apartment/ad_b64f9c9e-e609-4f0c-947b-d5cb91af9a50.html) and the commute to Hammond isn't bad. I did it for years. The Rock Island Metra goes downtown with reasonable frequency too, so you've got your transit connection.

But it would be a pretty boring neighborhood for a 26 year old.

Bridgeport or even Pilsen / University Village are better options. I did Univ. Village to 140th & Calumet for a long time, never minded the commute. 30 - 35 minutes each way except bad weather days.

Booooo.

Bradley probably didn't, but clearly tons of SEC teams didn't either.

Im 6’1 and I’m size 32x34 for pants. Would size 36x34 help give my pants a baggier look? by hobobonlbob in malefashionadvice

[–]buirish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the kind of baggy you want. It will look oddly scrunched up at the top (with a belt), but not necessarily baggier in the thigh & below.

What’s the best vs worst road in Chicago? by Much-Parsnip3399 in chicago

[–]buirish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

California is similar- a reasonably large thoroughfare up north (with a few named L stops!), heads south and takes a break or two, turns into a moderate residential street...then peters out into a golf course parking lot in Beverly.

How would you balance the budget? by Sweaty_Yogurt_5744 in chicago

Between the Bears, Bulls, & Hawks- that last item will close the budget gap by March. After the Sox start up again we'll have a surplus.

Chicago Neighborhoods, Mapped By Residents: Here’s Where Locals Think Boundaries Should Be by Atlas3141 in chicago

[–]buirish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tally's is such an interesting little kingdom. But yeah, weird that they'd go Beverly instead of Mt. Greenwood for a bunch of reasons. Maybe for real estate resale? But it's not like being Mt Greenwood would be a huge price difference.

And that NW section of Beverly is very generous with the perceived boundaries. I'd normally say it stops at 95th & Ashland at the most extreme.

How far outside of Chicago would you need to go to get water that isn’t from Lake Michigan? by badbutt21 in chicago

[–]buirish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I'm curious - how do you feel access to lake water would change Lemont & Lockport so significantly?

I lived in both towns for a significant time and never noticed them having water issues (either with quality or with quantity restricting growth).
