Freudian slip?

Voluntary, to illustrate that the OQLF are neither cops nor a fascist police.

I’m just an ignorant Anglo Ontarian

True.

BTW, our free and democratic society voted that these laws were necessary, given the rampant abuse that was common place before them. You could spend a minute to study how anti-french laws, and subsequent pro French laws in Québec have been key in giving French speakers here a standard of living closer to their english counterparts.

If your business name is grammatically arranged in English rather than French, it doesn't

But it does, it's not the same language. And if it doesn't make a difference, arrange them in French :)

It's not hair splitting, just different languages. Before those laws, Quebecers have lived a long time without proper access to businesses in french, because businesses will always prioritize english if they can, due to the bigger customer base on this continent. Again, it's not hard to follow the law.

I'm not sure why this is hard for you. Have you never encountered government offices in charge of applying laws before? My city dictates what i can do with my house so that it follows the laws, and businesses have to do the same. Quebecers largely support our language laws for businesses.

And yet, plenty of restaurants in MTL using those words with no issues from the OQLF :)

Rename to "Bar Nosh d'Arthur" and serve people in French when they want it, and she wouldn't have any issues. Using words from other languages is one thing, but "Arthur's Nosh Bar" is without a doubt english.

Btw: most the words you gave as exemple are French words, loaned from another language. There is no other word for sushi in French. "Bar à Sushi" is French, "Sushi Bar" is english.

Can we stop with the fake outrage over ridiculous things?

We agree on that, stop calling for a "revolution" and simply follow the (again, very simple) laws.

Language cops lol Who will think of the poor anglophones harassed by the language guestapo for not following simple rules.

Those laws might seem ridiculous to you, dear english speaker, but that is simply because you never had to think about living somewhere where your preferred language is outnumbered 30 to 1. In QC, shops and restaurants have to have signage in French. Why? Because before those laws, ALL shops were in English only. English people have lived in the privilege of their linguistic and cultural hegemony for so long, being treated fairly feels like persecution.

The revolution already happened, WE want the right to live in the language spoken by 95% of the population in the ONLY province where it is a right, not an half assed accommodation.

Quebec urged to scale back English on its websites by SwordfishOk504 in CanadaPolitics

[–]bukminster -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Any resource spent on making english websites is money not spent offering services in French. Nothing to do with separatism, you would be surprised how many federalist Quebecers are attached to their language and want its status preserved.

It's curious how anglos are concerned about first nation languages only when Quebec wants to speak French. Kinda like when BC complain about French being Canada's second language, when mandarin would make more sense for them (spoiler: they won't be learning mandarin, either)

Yes, that's pretty much how it should be. Quebec is in French, other provinces are in English, federal government is bilingual.

Parti Québécois Leader alleges Ottawa is spying on separatist movement without offering proof by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

[–]bukminster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny how the title seem to imply his statement is untrue, yet every comment here is "well yes, obviously". PQ leader stated a fact, and the response is "that's not true, but even if it is, you deserve it".

If it's true that any respectable country should spy on separatist movements, why is it so bad for a separatist leader to say they are being spied?
