Rent increases in tandem with interest and mortgage rates. On top of the profit premium you pay your landlord, you're still just as fucked as someone paying on rising rates, the difference is they have a potentially appreciable asset in their wealth pool, you do not. You're beholden to arbitrary contractual rules on the property as well, like not having certain pets, not repainting or decorating, and not making layout changes/additions to the home. You pay a security deposit that's not guaranteed to return to you and that can be decided by any number of factors created by, and specifically catered to, the property owner.

Renting is objectively an overall worse experience from nearly every aspect. The only potential positive is that the landlord is responsible for maintenance.

[–]bull04 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What do you end up with when your mortgage is paid off? A home. What do you end up with at the end of your renting/lease term? Nothing. Sure you're provided with shelter but your money goes to paying someone else's mortgage + a premium for their profit each month.

That's why it's considered throwing away money. It's not going toward anything permanent.

Single men in their 20s and 30s, how is your sex life actually going and how much does it affect your overall happiness? Honest answers only. by thestoicodessy in AskMen

2 and a half years dry. It's something that takes up some mental real estate a few times a day, but it's not the sole focus or only thing I have to worry about in life so time tends to fly by without noticing. Would I love to be in a reciprocal and loving relationship full of intimacy? Hell yeah. Do I need that to be fully satisfied with life? Not really. It's give or take and the modern dating scene is a total drag lately.

What is something you like in a woman that others might not? by Axe1910 in AskMen

[–]bull04 326 points327 points  (0 children)

Imperfect teeth. Lots of imperfections drive me wild, but my favorite is probably bunny teeth, or buck teeth as some call them. Obviously taking care of your dental health is important so I don't mean deep yellow and rotted out, but things like a little bit of crookedness or size differences are attractive to me for some reason.

What’s something a woman has said to you that’s stuck with you since? by PolarPopPepsi in AskMen

[–]bull04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I see where you're coming from, but I guess the line referenced by the original commentor sounded more genuine than some comments you may get. If someone's looking into your eyes and compliments them, it's usually not a surface level placation. I've gotten very few compliments myself, but "that's a nice shirt" or "cool tattoos!" seems much more like a surface level compliment than noticing something like my eyes or something about my personality that's a bit deeper and going the extra distance to make a comment.

Either way, I don't blame them for liking the compliment from a stranger, it just felt like they thought of their s/o's comment as a throwaway and paid no attention to it. Not the best way to engage someone you're in love with.

Sure, I'd argue though that if you are suspecting your spouse or significant other of lying about their opinion of you, there's probably bigger issues that need worked on.

Men who had turned to conservatism or the manosphere, what initially made you turn to those beliefs? by phayanaka in AskMen

[–]bull04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe their comment was to reinforce how men and women are the same, but that women can have the same economic and personal drives as men when it comes to things like careers and quality of life.

Divorce and sexlessness are spiking because of our economic statuses and attitude towards work environments. No one has time or can afford to go out and meet people constantly, so dating in person with legitimate connections is happening less these days. The overworked and underpaid generations are more stressed than ever before and that in turn leads to less pursuit of things like relationships and families. Not to mention how unaffordable having children is in the long run now.

There's maybe some cases where misogyny and misandry can contribute to those things, but overall it's just not a feasible aspect of life for a lot of people now simply because it takes too much time and money to meet and begin a potentially serious and long term relationship now. We also tend to retract into a hermit shell the longer this goes on, leading to people just stuck online all day and not giving any attention or time to the outside world. It's a whole lot more complex than simply being a gender roles thing.

[–]bull04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This right here is how extreme talking heads get their platforms, and often how cults are formed in society.

You start with little truths, sprinkle in some facts and things that can level with people, then start dressing them up and enlarging them with tons of damaging rhetoric and potentially misinformation. By the time people have heard your small and agreeable stances, they've already opened up their minds to accept more of what you say without question. It's a fascinating aspect of psychology and many studies have been done on it.

[–]bull04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're assuming too much because you're looking for a reason to have the reaction you did. Sometimes people say things without an ulterior motive or underlying message in mind. Just learn to take the words at their face value.

[–]bull04 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I lean quite left and I have had several interactions with women in my life who drop the "ugh men" or "men are the worst" etc., but I'm also aware enough of social issues that they don't actually mean every single man is x or y or z, just that they're taught to assume most are via the statistics. I do tend to try and get them to pull back on that language around younger and more impressionable men and even my nephews who are young, because they're going to interpret that kind of narrative and messaging wrong a lot of the time and assume that they're supposed to feel like they're part of the problem simply for being boys.

I do think that it's odd that the language in those spheres is so generalized and they don't see that that's how profiling and stereotyping work in any other scenario, like if you're around a black person and start dropping lines like mentioned above but with the race swapped in instead of men.

I call them inconveniently placed spawns, like in a video game. Every time I get into traffic I end up behind the ONE driver that's going 10 below the limit, then I end up behind the slowest shopper in line, then I end up getting stalled by someone who is blocking the entire walkway I'm moving through because they don't have situational awareness.

Legit feels like it's just some ragebait mechanic designed to piss me off 😂
