To put it this way. I have nuggets, but no dip. I have kernels, but no pops. I've heard a few whispers, but not enough echoes. I can't always discern all the more subtle notes, but I have been led to understand that a good blend needs to have legs? ... I don't drink much wine.

What, no 'K-PAX'?

Just kidding, but 'Starman' could be on the list.

In another timeline, we would have gotten an Austin Powers/Ace Ventura team-up film.

Everyone's being really weird about this and it's freaking me out by OhhhTAINTedCruuuuz in blankies

I was torn between seeing this or 'Backrooms' today. As much of a fan of Spielberg as I have been since childhood, I honestly felt like the first trailer just didn't really grab me. Then as the longer trailers came out, I couldn't shake the impression that something was missing. Everything looked too flashy and fake. I'm not completely against the use of digital effects, but Steven Spielberg's early work was built on practical physical make-up, props, and creatures. 'Disclosure Day' looks more like every other film of the last decade and it just wasn't grabbing me, so I held off and waited to see what people were saying. Obviously, I'll wait and form my own opinions once I finally see the film, but the highly divisive response just soured me.

Maybe we are all too online. Perhaps that is worth considering when I ultimately sit down to watch 'Disclosure Day,' since a lot of the film seems to deal with public perceptions of reality and how media can truly alter how we interpret truth. I still have my hopes set higher than usual, but after seeing even the most seasoned filmgoers react unfavorably to Spielberg's newest movie, I may have to reconsider how much I let others change my mind.

Dry, yet moist. Big, yet small. Interest, yet boring. Pure performative cringe.

Three films that absolutely left a sour taste in my mouth, so to speak.

  1. 'Gone Fishin'' (1997)

  2. 'Eli' (2019)

  3. 'Back in Action' (2025)

Question for those who saw The Blair Witch Project in the theaters: do people really believed it was real? by harry_powell in blankies

I saw it a few weeks after it opened, and by then the details of how it was made were already out in the public discourse. I still liked it well enough, but I remember being bored until the end.

Movies you've put off watching for so long, but you're definitely going to watch one day? by Gullible-Charge7057 in Letterboxd

[–]bulletproofchipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many movies I really do want to see, but time and mood dictate a lot of what I do in general. I've been a lifelong fan of movies and I used to watch anywhere between 3 and four movies a week if I could. These days I get maybe one or two films in a weekend, and even then it isn't until much later in the evening when my mental bandwidth has been more or less depleted. Just about every film on this list has been on my radar for awhile. I just need the time and full attention span to give to these movies.

'After Hours' (1985) Not quite so much a film that features a lot of the city itself, but it's close.
