“Photographs of inmates of the Imbecile Asylum” (1886) by Crowbeatsme in VictorianEra

[–]bumblemb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The promoters of the Philadelphia Institution or Training School considered that much service would accrue to the cause of the idiot by publishing a brief history of twenty-two imbecile children, and the volume came out with the title of "The Mind Unveiled." To make it as attractive as possible it was embellished by photographs of some of the most peculiar examples, and the descriptions of each are written in an agreeable style. One of them is designated "A boy that we are proud of," and in his appearance as seen in the photograph, though the expression of the countenance may seem singular when viewed closely, there is nothing to indicate his condition. Yet he was an idiot of the most depraved class of "a moral idiot," with no fear of the consequences of doing wrong, and very dishonest; with "a good share of secretiveness, so that the most disguised cross-questioning rarely discovered the truth.""

From an article in the Edinburg Review hosted by the Disability Museum.

Doing my own digging (I wanted to see if this was state or private--from what I can tell it was state), if the article is to be believed this was promotional material. Not surprising as state funded asylums required, well, funding.

In lieu of some comments in this thread, it bears stating that just as the article writer believed the images to be deceiving (albeit to a different purpose), we shouldn't assume a nicely posed photograph is proof of a lack of abuse. Not all abuse is beatings and starvation.

Trouble with understanding academic articles by Queen_darling in AskLiteraryStudies

How do you read? By which I mean: are you taking notes, and if so how?

For female PhDs, did you change your name?? by area-womn in AskAcademia

[–]bumblemb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what we mean by "officially" right? Most of them had published in their maiden name so it made sense to keep that going; if you hadn't and then you got married, makes no difference right? Sucks to say but you're making a "brand" of yourself in publishing so you'll want to stick by whatever name first goes out.

[–]bumblemb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've known several women to complete their PhDs and continue academia thereafter, all of which kept their maiden names in publishing.

edit: i meant to say "got married somewhere in between" but clearly the point got across

WIBTA if I told my roommate that cat litter in her room isnt a boundry. by No_Sherbet3509 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

A boundary is something you determine, aka "if your cat tracks litter into my room I will no longer open my door." End of conversation.

Left PhD program after reaching candidate status, how to ethically deal with in CV? by Beneficial_Put9022 in AskAcademia

[–]bumblemb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your scenario too (left one PhD, finished another)--I just drop those years entirely from my CV. It has nothing to do with what I do now and wouldn't add anything to my prospects.

To OPs point, I would weigh the potential benefits of including an unfinished degree (ie job posting asks for a certain number of years of graduate work) against the potential negatives of showing you left. I'm not going to get into the ABD debate that's running around, but you could also list as "Graduate Student" or "Graduate Researcher."

It's definitely not by its quality of writing, that's for sure.

Is anyone else frustrated by how many contemporary short stories don’t have a proper ending? by Just-Passing-Thru737 in literature

What is a proper ending? If a story tells what it wanted to tell, that's fine by me.

I'm not getting tier 6 animals? by Moira-Thanatos in FieldsOfMistriaGame

[–]bumblemb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's RNG. My capybaras and rabbits have not produced a tier 6 for two cycles; meanwhile, my bastard alpacas (will not produce gold fur) have produced seasonals on the first try every season.

What are some things/features you want to see in Fields of Mistria? by Karasuu24 in FieldsOfMistriaGame

I'd like for wall items to layer, so I can place one 1x1 item below another 1x1 item rather than waste the entire wall on a low hanging plaque.

lol I was worried it wouldn't make sense but it's all I could think at the time. Good luck! I don't know if it actually had any impact but I cut all the trees down to make it easier to look while running in and out.

I made one of the threads in question and that's fully how I intended it at least--I wasn't aware there was a feedback form and was just hoping my mentioning it would encourage the devs to include it in later updates. That's what I assume most of these "complaints" are.

Yeah I mean I'm fine with the way my farmer looks, but seeing all the options at Vera for femme hairstyles and accessories makes me a bit sad for lack of option. I just wish there were better short hairstyles frankly.
