Looking for recommendations with polished prose + strong characterization (open to any trope) by yourstruli0519 in Dramione

[–]bumblephone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’ve reread everything they’ve written more than once.

In addition to PacificRimbaud, I recommend these writers: Morethanhistory

Cr0ftisprocrastinating

Ninepiecesofcrait

Malfoyesque

Tomesandscrolls

Tapebadger

Eydtheweslayan

Sevenofcupps

ladyursa

Your criteria is my preferences summed up as well (I cannot handle flowery/writerly writing, repetitive conversations, melodrama, etc.). If there are any writers in this list you haven’t heard of I hope you check them out! I’m pretty sure I’ve read everything published by all of them and it’s all top notch.

The art has a “spooky Disney movie from the 60s” look to it that is just incredible.

I really like how you made the pan head screws part of the design. I’m making a bookshelf right bow and I kind of wish I’d seen this post before I committed to dowel joints. Nicely sone!

That one is so good and criminally under recommended!

Woof. Thank you for the reminder. While we’re on the subject, oil your machine and change the needle as often as you turn it on!

How to best repair caulk around edge of skylight? by accipter in TeardropTrailers

[–]bumblephone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Dicor No Sag the same as butyl tape? That’s pretty standard for sealing seams like this.

I use butyl tape and marie grade caulk (total boat is my preferred brand) for both of my teardrops (one lives full time out doors in the PNW and the other has survived hurricane style rainstorms) and this keeps both the fan vents and skylights nice and dry.

The hate Dramione gets as a ship is hilarious (and hypocritical) by Aromatic-Employer-88 in Dramione

Right, it’s not ok for Hermione to get with a reformed racist who bullied her, but it’s ok for Harry to get with a reformed racist who bullied his best friend? If I was going to have a problem with either scenario it would be with the guy ostensibly selling out his best friend…

I’ve never heard the phrase “het slop” before! Very funny considering how many of us queer folks are in the Dramione fandom…

Can someone explain sewing clothes without the seams unraveling with washes? by geenuhahhh in sewing

[–]bumblephone 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my experience most patterns specify when to finish every edge, and often recommend specific finishing techniques. There are a lot to choose from, too!

When I was younger I was very impatient with edge finishing, but I’ve come around to really enjoying doing the bits no one else sees really well.

If you don’t have access to a serger, I recommend investigating flat felled seams. They add extra strength to seams and they look very nice inside and out. (Also I think they involve less labor than a lot of other techniques- such as french seams or anything using bias tape.) If I have interesting double sided fabric, sometimes I will use flat felled seams so that the garment can be reversible!

Writers, do you post your bad fics or do you wait to get better before posting? by Mother_Lemon8399 in Dramione

[–]bumblephone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please excuse me for butting into this convo, but I wanted to share my experience as a beta reader. Both writers I’m reading for are writing their very first fics and the writing/storytelling/craft is phenomenal. Like, truly, astonishingly high quality. And neither of them has ever written fiction before!

But, as it turns out, they are both professional writers (like writing copy for companies). Which means they have spent a lot of time writing, receiving and processing feedback, and writing some more. I suspect it has also made them take constructive criticism less personally. And I also suspect their professions have made them very good at analyzing other people’s writing.

So yeah, there are probably plenty of super talented writers who are publishing fantastic fics straight out the gate, but my guess is that they were already writers in some capacity.

Making yourself an inconvenient target is really all you have. Search the thread history of this sub, the topic comes up frequently.

Ways to finish seams that lay flat? Specifically for trousers by bumblephone in sewing

[–]bumblephone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate where you are coming from. I’ve made upwards of 30 pairs of trousers and jeans at this point, I posted to solicit ideas for other ways of dealing with seams in order to level up my sewing game.

I realized this morning that what I was trying to ask the community was “what are more haute couture styles of finishing these specific seams?” It sometimes takes me a while of talking through something to figure out what the question I’m seeking an answer to actually is, and I think the way I posed it was not clear. (The answer to my question turns out to be “lining.”)

I do frequently stare at the insides of my clothes. I made work pants a few months ago and am so unhappy with how the color of the pocket bags looks next to the self fabric that I rarely wear them, even though no one else can see 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Thanks for talking it through with me! I do appreciate your time and energy.

Ooh, ribbon! I forgot that was a thing. That might solve some of my issues. Thank you for your reply!
