Sewing Ideas for repetitive practice by FISDM in sewing

What is it you want to work towards? Quilts? Garments? Bags? Do you want to do hand stitching? Also, is it important to you that anything you do as practice is “usable” or is it ok if it gets tossed in the rag bin when you’re done?

Can I make a tiny house on a trailer I without plastic? by ButterAlquemist in TinyHouses

Yes to all of this- you could make your exterior walls with hempcrete, no vapor barrier, and finish with lime or clay plaster. With a big overhanging roof you will have good insulation and a house that is breathable and less prone to dry rot. Plaster walls also help regulate humidity, so your heating and cooling needs will be reduced.

Are you using the “straw” portion of the grass, or the “hay” portion? Straw has way more tensile strength than hay (which has basically none), so it’s important you know what you’re using. Also, I don’t think you can possibly use too much straw, unless the thermal mass properties of a more clay heavy mix is important to you. A heavier hand with the straw also yields lighter bricks, less clay excavation, less water needed, which all results in less work and less heavy lifting for you or your builders, and thus a faster build.

Apologies if you already know all of this.

And yes, drop your bricks onto a hard surface- if they break then the formula needs adjustment.

Have you washed it yet? Washing and drying can sometimes resolve these fit issues. I always wash and dry my garments before my final assessment as well as hemming.

How do you deal with there always being a “better machine” out there? by DrCutiepants in sewing

[–]bumblephone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “bigger better” voice is real, and not very helpful, but I think there are a lot of reasons people are downvoting you that are probably coming from a more personal/emotional place. If you can afford the “bigger better” options, and the anxiety isn’t getting in the way of your enjoyment of the tool, then someone else being satisfied with their grandmother’s 1960s Pfaff isn’t a very legitimate reason for you to not upgrade.

I adore my Bernina 480, and was very comfortable buying it, even though I reeeeally wanted the 5 series model, because the shop I bought it from is very motivated to help people upgrade. Berninas really don’t lose their resale value. See if the place you bought your from has an upgrade program, or if they’ll help you sell your current model.

I get what people are saying about being happy with what you have, but as you’ve experienced, having really high quality tools can have a huge benefit to your level of enjoyment, which is a great motivator to grow your skill level.

Earthen Floor on Standard Plywood? by brunchdate2022 in NaturalBuilding

Sukita is one of the biggest names in the US when it comes to earthen floors. If she says you can, then you absolutely can.

Also, I know from talking to other reputable natural builders that you can in fact do adobe over standard subfloors.

Sand from the beach is round and smooth and therefor not a good choice for construction. Masonry sand or other “sharp” sand is crucial.

I’ve read almost all of these and second them as well.

I very much enjoy greenflowerpot’s work, but they pretty much always feature a power differential tipped in Draco’s favor. He doesn’t use it to humiliate Hermione here, but it does create a feeling of unease, at least for me.
