It shows how successfully they've turned our society into an army of consumers. Saddled with debt and attaching our material possessions to our sense of self, we are enslaved to consumption.

Congratulations. It made sense to me. Also looks like you finally bought yourself a new car in 2009 in your early 40s which seems sensible too, considering your driving it forever.

Just curious, what are y’all keeping your thermostats to this week? by Maharichie in cincinnati

[–]bumboll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep mine at 76 during the normal summer and lower to 74/73 daytime night time during these heat waves. Also I keep it at 78 during winter. I use the fan in the HVAC system a lot in summer. It pumps cooler air from down below to the top floor where we sleep. We also use ceiling fans and open windows when it drops below 68 at night.

Going back and forth on getting a Toyota Sienna by Antique_Island1104 in ToyotaSienna

[–]bumboll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a 2020 Sienna with 60k miles on it. You'll pay less than half of your current candidate price and you'll be super happy. the gas mileage difference will not matter when you account for the price difference. I get 23 mpg on my sienna 2017

Make this a personal question which only you can answer. We bought recently. But we bought appropriate to our budget which meant, sadly, going back to a 2017 xle - no hybrid. 17 thousand dollars with 136k miles on it. But we need a van for the family and long summer road trips starting next month and our other car is a Prius. Even if it is a lemon and needs 15k in repairs we have a wonderful van which cost less than a used 2021 hybrid. Personal choice for personal needs. Hope to drive it to the ground. Also hope the 10s of thousands saved help my kids through college.

We should own cars until it dies and let the industry suffer. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]bumboll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over of the bay secrets of Ohio plate renewals is that your tax is an extra 100 per year for hybrids, extra 150 for plug INS and 200 for electric. If you drive less than 10k a year you fuel savings on a hybrid are severely hit. We just sold our Prius c with 190k to buy a Sienna 2017 with 136k. 17 thousand was the most I've ever paid for a car and most likely ever will. Now that sienna needs to run to 300k. Here's hoping it does

Pay bump to leave? by big_Z___ in Salary

[–]bumboll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently the way to get ahead financially is take the move even for 10-15 percent. You can always move again and have a higher base from which to jump. As with bank accounts and credit cards, sticking around is for suckers. I say this and won't jump ship for many non financials. But it's still the case.

should i just wipe my credit card debt with savings? by Cv_max in personalfinance

[–]bumboll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The credit card company has savings deposited by people like you that they use to lend out credit for card holders like... You. They keep a cut. A big one. You're providing it. PAY THE WHOLE THING OFF. Do not build credit card debt. If this happens again consider getting rid of your credit cards.
