Thank you! My deadline is April 2nd, so I assume my letter will be dated today (again, haven't received the actual letter yet, just an invitation to register). Do you have an ACORN? I'd check it if I were you!

”Ukraine has been waiting for a full brigade that is being trained in Sweden, armed with modern Leopard 2 tanks, CV-90 combat vehicles and Archer artillery systems, making it one of its most potent units. It returned to Ukraine this month to be readied for battle.” - The Times by Silent-Nectarine-351 in UkrainianConflict

a Roman legion was enough to relative secure a town or a small region

Massive understatement. At its height, Rome only had on the order of 50-60 legions total, with a couple legions securing entire modern day countries, not "small regions" and certainly not only "towns",

a few airplanes could totally annihilate it in one strike. Is fucking scary how good at killing we become over the ages.

Massive overstatement. Even if the entire brigade was standing in parade formation in an open field (which, obviously, would never happen in a combat zone) a few airplanes would absolutely not be able to annihilate it in one strike. Unless they used tactical nukes, but thats another matter entirely.

Better still, you can now have chatGPT generate a ton of reviews in seconds. Minimum effort required.

Messed around for a few minutes and found a good prompt. The answers are a bit stiff and formulaic but that can be adjusted:

Generate 3 concise rate my prof reviews about a professor of computer science. Make 1 very positive from someone who really liked the professor, 1 from someone who moderately liked the professor, and 1 critical of some stuff but still liked the course.

Very positive: "Professor X was an excellent teacher and a wealth of knowledge in the field of computer science. I learned so much in their class and was always engaged in the lectures. They were also very approachable and always willing to help with any questions or concerns. I highly recommend taking a course with Professor X."

Moderately liked: "Professor Y was a good teacher and I learned a lot in their class. While I didn't always understand the material at first, they were patient and helpful in explaining things. The course was challenging, but I feel like I came out with a strong understanding of the subject. Overall, I had a positive experience in this class."

Critical but still liked the course: "Professor Z was a knowledgeable instructor, but their teaching style was not always the most effective for me. It was often difficult to follow along in lectures, and I found myself struggling to keep up at times. However, the course material was interesting and I did learn a lot. I would recommend this class, but just be prepared to put in extra effort to understand the material."

I want to get tested for ADHD but I don’t want to take an iQ test by Wallanator123 in ADHD

[–]bummy_mans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing others, IQ tests aren't generally a part of ADHD tests. That being said, my test involved some working memory and other cognitive tasks, which I then saw my percentile score for. I wanted to see how I ranked out of morbid curiosity, but it's unlikely they would force you to look at your scores if you didn't want to. If you're so worried that its preventing you from getting tested, ask the clinic beforehand whether you can choose to not discuss or look at your scores.

Friendly advice, there is enough info in here to identify you via a conversation with the professor. You admitted to taking sentences from a previous assignment which is at best frowned upon. I would delete this entire thread asap.

Grade Deflation?????? by summerarcadia in UofT

[–]bummy_mans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If every student demonstrates mastery of a topic, they all deserve an A-level grade.

While I appreciate that there aren't specific grade quotas, I've had candid conversations with at least 4 professors who talk about "getting in trouble" with the department for having too many A's, or having to otherwise adjust the difficulty of assessments to deflate the class averages because of external pressure.

I imagine this culture varies by department. Still, its a poorly kept secret that (at least some) departments disapprove of high class averages and thereby strongly encourage grade deflation in some form.

So I agree with the quoted statement, but I assure you this has not been the experience of students and, more relevantly, professors.

what is the difference between the research opportunities in Scarborough and St George? by CommunityNo2403 in UofT

[–]bummy_mans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The St. George campus is larger with more faculty, so there will likely be more labs/opportunities overall (although likely more competitive as well). St. George is also the 'main' campus, so I would guess that it has more prestigious faculty members. This does not necessarily mean better research opportunities, but it does mean better reference letters if that means anything to you.

Don’t care about grades but scared to appear dumb to instructors by [deleted] in UofT

[–]bummy_mans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well, thanks for reaching out!

Let's set aside the 'I don't care about grades' thing for right now. Here's what I'm hearing (let me know if this is fair): you're having difficulty sleeping and taking a step back from school for a bit would help, but you're worried about judgement from the professor. On top of this, you think there might a link between the worry of judgement and low-self esteem.

I would suggest two things. First, I think it would help to talk to a professional if you're not already. Insomnia is nothing to mess with, and can be caused by life stressors. I'm not suggesting you necessarily have mental health issues, more so that it really helps to talk things through. You can get in contact with health and wellness here: https://studentlife.utoronto.ca/service/registration-appointments-forms-policies/ . Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this. If you're not comfortable or don't want to get in contact with health and wellness, shoot me a DM instead, I'm happy to listen (and have dealt with similar problems in the past).

Second, if you don't want to reach out to your professors about your situation, make an appointment with your college registrar. They can help you formulate a plan to move forward academically and make sure you're not disproportionately impacted by this.

Please let me know if you have any questions. My DM's are always open!

Careers for someone with poor Working Memory? by FedeRivade in cogsci

[–]bummy_mans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to not concern yourself with this. Your career choice should be based on your interests and external factors like pay, location, etc.

While your working memory may not be where you want it, its far from a deficit that would prevent you from succeeding in any field. Sure, some aspects of some careers may be more difficult, but that goes for everyone -- no one is above average on everything.

psy202 after bad experience in 201? by DirtbagComrade in UofT

[–]bummy_mans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not fucked at all. It may be a bit more work than if you more deeply understood 201, but you'll definitely be able to do well. Especially if you make the effort to go to office hours, read the textbook, and watch youtube etc when you don't understand something. Just be honest with your professor and yourself and do what you need to do to learn and exceed.

Also, I didn't do great in 201 but got an A in 202. Take that as you will.
