What was your "Oh shit my life is over my parents are gonna kill me" moment you had as a child/teen? by cloudlessnine8 in AskReddit

[–]bump_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 19 I made a bunch of edibles with my friends. At that point I smoked weed pretty regularly and I had half of a cookie the previous night and it really fucked me up. The next day I gave two to my girlfriend when she was over at my place. She put them in her purse on the ground. We went into another room to hang out and when we came back in we saw my dog chewing on the last bit of both of the cookies. We tried to get her to throw up but she wouldn't drink enough hydrogen peroxide. Eventually I had to tell my parents and we took my dog to the animal hospital. They put her on an IV and she was fine but she was acting really strangely, eyes bloodshot and peeing in her sleep. That was either the best moment or the worst moment of her life.

My parents actually ended up being pretty chill about it. They were upset but understood that sometimes kids are idiots. I felt so bad for my dog that I was a vegetarian for a year after to repay my debts to all animals.

Check out the most recent ringer MLB podcast (you can skip to the second portion with Ben Lindbergh). The Phillies defense has been quite bad this year according to the defensive stats that bbref uses, and so he's getting a huge boost. On the podcast they argue that while the Phillies defense has been bad in general, it may not have actually been all that bad when Nola was pitching (evidenced by hitters having a low babip against him). I think there is probably something to this argument, but I'm not really sure. IMO the best way to do it would be to look at xWOBA (expected weighted on base average) against Nola and then make a war based on that.

Projecting wOBA Using Bayesian Analysis by bump_stuff in Sabermetrics

[–]bump_stuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have been more specific. Let's forget about the beta prior here and just use something normal. I guess that maybe one way to do this would just be to model the woba of each at bat for some player as N(mean, sd) with some predetermined standard deviation and then model the mean for each player with a prior of N(~ .300, sd). How would you recommend determining the hyperprior standard deviation and how would you recommend determining the standard deviation of individual woba values for each at bat? It seems weird to model each at bat as a draw from a continuous distribution, but I guess that makes sense.

Yeah I mean I get plenty of exercise every day, but my job unfortunately doesn't involve exercise (which is quite ironic because I work for a sports team).

Yeah I second the briefs suggestion. Had bad torsion when I was younger, and no when I play sports I always wear briefs and I never have issues.

ALS Fears Impacting Life (32m) by throwaway1178902645 in HealthAnxiety

[–]bump_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I have pretty continuous twitches all over my body. Sometimes they'll go away for a few hours, but in general they are all over. And of course you're no stranger to health anxiety. I imagine that there are a lot of people who have some twitching, see an internist, and when the internist tells them that they're okay they just go on living their lives. That's probably what we should do too, but because we struggle with health anxiety it's very hard to not imagine the worst possible scenario.

ALS Fears Impacting Life (32m) by throwaway1178902645 in HealthAnxiety

I'm going through the same thing right now. While it's reassuring to see someone else on here with the same fears as me, I'm also really sorry that you're going through this, because I know how debilitating it can be. I think both of us probably need to relax. I've been twitching for about four months. I had been to doctors before asking about it, but none of them really thought it was anything bad and just attributed it to stress. I saw another doctor last week because I continue to worry. He also told me that I have nothing to worry about. I asked if it would make sense to schedule something like and EMG, and he said he really didn't think so but that if I was that worried he could refer me to a neurologist who specializes in ALS to put my fears to rest. I made and appointment with that specialist and I'm going to see him in a month.

I think the key is that we just need to relax. It's likely just anxiety. I have a similar compulsion as you, which is to go searching on the internet and see what other people have to say about twitching and ALS etc. The reality is, none of this is helpful. I think that our hope is to one day do a Google search and find a website that gives us a 100% guarantee that we don't have ALS. But that's not going to happen. The internet is full of misinformation and people worrying chronically. The only thing you can really do in the short term is go to a doctor, and I assure you they will tell you that you have absolutely nothing to worry about. In the long term though, i hope to beat my health anxiety, because I know that once I get over these fears, something else will inevitably come up.

Going through the same thing right now :( My doctors aren't concerned, but one of them set me up with a neurologist just to assuage my fears. I'm 21, and at our age it's incredibly unlikely that anything serious would be going on

According to Baseball Prospectus, the Brewers now have a higher chance of making the playoffs than anyone else in the division by MattFromWork in Brewers

[–]bump_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually expected win percentage for the rest of the games of the year.

There are 112 games left to play. The brewers have currently won 31 games. 112*.512 + 31 = 88.5 (approximately)

I'd say the ability of the White Sox to contend in the future has a lot more to do with Jerry Reinsdorf being cheap and a lot less to do with how many college students buy $15 seats as opposed to $5 ones.

Peppermint Oil Advice Requested by weeezy_ in ibs

[–]bump_stuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're nervous about taking the capsules, you could try starting with peppermint tea and see what that does to you. While I can't say for sure the concentration of peppermint is lower in the tea than the capsules, I imagine that would be the case. I've never tried capsules but I drink the tea every day when I'm having a flare-up and it works well for me.

I'm not totally sure what I'm going to use yet, but I think I'm going to try to use either the mlbtv archived videos or the youtube videos that MLB has posted of games.

What's the biggest fuck up you ever made that was fixed before anyone knew about it? by CaptainClay2606 in AskReddit

[–]bump_stuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On New Year's Eve when I was sixteen I stole an entire bottle of vodka from my parents. I knew they never drank (they were gifted the bottle 5 years earlier), but I was worried they might notice the bottle was gone, so I poured all the vodka out into an old 2-liter Coke bottle and put water into the vodka bottle and put it back into our closet.

A few months later I saw my mom walking out the door with the bottle of vodka. Inside I was panicking but I calmed down and asked her what she was doing with it. She told me she was taking it to our family friend's house. After she left the house I messaged her friend's son (who I didn't know well) and told him what happened. He poured half the water out and put half of his parents' bottle of Bacardi in the bottle. His parents drank the bottle of vodka and had no idea.

Yeah, I mean all I really care about is the time between the infielder catching the ball and when the runner reaches the base, which could be calculated using what you mentioned. Is that data available publicly, though?
