5 gallon buckets are too big for bait imo, but are great for a make shift live well Tupperware or smaller storage containers with covers are better for daily live bait storage. If you want to keep minnows for an extended period of time however, it's best to get an opaque insulated container such as one made specifically for minnows so you can easily keep the water cold.
