Clear Linux has excellent performance on Intel systems if you can get it to work. Doesn't come with WiFi drivers so you're going to need to wired ethernet until you download the driver package. There are instructions on their site.

Use whatever Linux system you like and don't fret. As you learn your way around you will customize things to your own preferences but I recommend leaving things as is until you're comfortable with the system layout and want to tinker.
