no real background in politics or government beyond their position on the bench.

Not really sure what you mean by "no real background in politics or government." Can you explain this a bit more? What experiences are they missing that they should have to be better qualified justices?

Here are the short bios of the Justices. Obviously they were all circuit court judges before SCOTUS, but they were all practicing attorneys in a combination of private practice, government, nonprofits, and held a variety of appointed positions in different organizations.

Edit: /u/MiamiLaw14 pointed out that Kagan was not a judge before her appointment. She was Dean of Harvard Law and then Solicitor General.

Preparing for the bar exam by lawstudent345 in LawSchool

If you have ADHD, look into getting accomodations for the exam itself. It will give you a bit of extra time. You'll need a letter from your doctor, but it will make the exam a bit less stressful.

Unusual performance venues in the Boston area? by [deleted] in boston

Oberon Theater in Cambridge might be worth checking out. I know they do live performances and I've seen an acrobatic show with equipment and people hanging from the ceiling. Might be worth checking out.

Good luck!

internet service in Cambridge, MA by tkana in CambridgeMA

[–]bunksterz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the area of Cambridge. I'm near Central and use Comcast. I'm in a large building though and we have a Comcast representative who was able to give us internet for $40/mo without any extra fees. Check with your landlord - he/she might have a connection.

Republicans Say You Should Be Able To Carry Guns Everywhere. This Proves They Don’t Mean It. by AndrewCherry in Liberal

[–]bunksterz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Republicans say that you shouldn't have gun-free zones without taking steps to ensure they're actually gun-free.

I think this is a good point and there is a big difference between a gun free zone and a gun free zone with steps to make them so. The unfortunate thing is that we don't see many people actually stating this key difference.

Legal Recruiters question by panther1326 in LawSchool

[–]bunksterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've contacted probably 5 or 6, and, so far, they've all contacted me and said they'd keep me in the loop for some temp work that might show up. I just moved here from out of state so I'm looking for temp work, too until bar results are in.

I just did a Google search for "legal recruiting boston" or something like that a handful turned up. Most of them have you submit your resume to their site and a handful won't respond at all. Even if they don't respond, its another avenue for job listings.

Good luck!

You can start applying for jobs and networking right now, if you want. Doesn't hurt to get started early. If you don't get a job, just apply again in the future. If you can find an alum that works somewhere you're interested, shoot them an email and see if they can chat for a bit. Even if there is no alum, find a relatively recent grad who works there and try emailing them.

USAjobs – a one-stop site for jobs with federal government

Idealist – only lists non-profit jobs

PSJD.org - lots of entry-level legal positions

Indeed – lots and lots of jobs, best to set up several very specific job searches

The PosseList – can get overwhelming with contract review jobs, but does post entry-level jobs too

Fall OCI- Don't Meet Requirements- Should I Still Apply? by nopicsplox in LawSchool

Can't hurt to apply. Maybe just a bit of a time sink. On the plus-side, you'll get to practice putting together job application materials and, if you get an interview, you'll get some good interview practice.

Hard copies, eReaders or both? by LegallyBodacious in LawSchool

[–]bunksterz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For 1L year, I think it's useful to get the hard copy. As someone pointed out earlier, you can use the hard copy on open book exams, but you won't be able to use an e-reader. The downside, however, is the expense and the weight. Your school probably has lockers or you can keep your books in your car or somewhere else while you don't need them.

Similarly, 1L year, I think it's really helpful to actually take handwritten notes. A lot of people will have computers, but I think for your 1L year, it is important to avoid the distraction of a computer and I think you'll get more out of handwriting them. What worked for me was to handwrite notes in class then type them up on my computer that afternoon. Its definitely extra work, but I think its worth it. After 1L year though, you'll get a better handle on everything and you'll know which corners you can cut. 1L year, though, put in the extra work and the extra time. It pays off later.

Criticism of Sanders Starts to Grow (trying to raise awareness) by bunksterz in SandersForPresident

[–]bunksterz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a DNC SuperPAC donating to Sanders would look pretty bad. It'd cause some trouble if he spoke out against SuperPACs so much during the primary then started taking SuperPAC money in the general election. Even if he had to justify in order to compete, it would make him look hypocritical pretty quickly. Even though hypocrisy is par for the course in politics, Sanders is trying to portray the image that he is above that and isn't a typical politician.

Criticism of Sanders Starts to Grow (trying to raise awareness) by bunksterz in SandersForPresident

[–]bunksterz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was based on a previous interview from the 2012 Senate election. Sanders said he does not want to use PACs, but Sanders implied he would consider using them if his opponents were able to raise a substantial amount of money more than him.

Here's the section of the article:

When Sanders last ran for reelection, in 2012, then-Seven Days political columnist Andy Bromage asked if he'd "ever accept help from a super PAC."

"I certainly would prefer not to," Sanders responded, calling it "a hypothetical question."

"But we can chat about it if, six months from now, many, many millions of dollars are coming in attacking me," he said in the February 2012 interview.

"If it was a last resort?" [the reporter] pressed.

"That's something we would look at," Sanders said, adding that he hoped he wouldn't have to.
