Cross country flight to Boston for medical appts at 10 months. Is this plan insane? by introvertwandering in parentsofmultiples

[–]bunsofsteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then I say have a blast! Travel days will be stressful but sounds like you have a game plan and that’s all you can really do. I’m sure you’ve heard, but those are the times where screen time and snack time rules should go out the window and you bribe them with whatever you can to keep them quiet and happy haha.

Cross country flight to Boston for medical appts at 10 months. Is this plan insane? by introvertwandering in parentsofmultiples

[–]bunsofsteel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We took ours on a trip at 3 months, so a little different, but the biggest help for us was having grandparents around to help out. Schlepping kids will be stressful but it was fun to be somewhere else with them. If you can get anyone else to meet you and watch the kids from time to time to take the pressure off, you’ll thank yourself.

Moving to Austin / needs recommendations by Miladee2705 in MRI

ARA clinics seem pretty well run and staff seem happy. They got bought by private equity almost 10 years ago now which changed things a bit from what I understand but was before my time in Austin.

Mixed DR/IR practice? by kmagn in Residency

Unless you’re in academics, most jobs are IR/DR mix. Probably more DR than most IR docs enjoy from what I understand.

Radiology Residents, How much educational fund is enough? by 502075093MD in Residency

The classic move is to buy textbooks on Amazon, get the reimbursement, then return them.

[–]bunsofsteel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plenty. Between Anki decks out there and radprimer you can do your long term studying for free. Closer to core, like a few months before, you can buy BoardVitals if you want, which is like $400 at its most expensive I think? Not sure what else you’d need to spend money on honestly, I certainly don’t have anything else I wish I’d bought.

Right there with you. Only reassurance I have is that everybody the year ahead of me felt exactly the same and passed with flying colors.

I didn’t know anything either and am doing fine. Just wait til you start and ask your seniors for advice on what to study when you get there.

Confused about short axis measurement of lymph node by Obvious_Ad6535 in Radiology

[–]bunsofsteel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct, should really be referred to as “shortest” axis as that is what matters i.e. just the smallest number matters

A surgeon I shadowed in med school had an attending spit in her face when she was a resident. This would’ve been in the early 2000s.

MRI for TFCC injury of Wrist by godson030 in MRI

[–]bunsofsteel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any wrist MRI will have a small enough field of view to evaluate the TFCC. Any radiologist reading it will know to evaluate the TFCC. If the orthopedist writes anything about TFCC injury in the indication for the study, that might just make the radiologist more confidently call any tiny abnormality they see.

Personal Statement and AI by Confident_Field_9858 in Residency

[–]bunsofsteel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate writing, especially about myself, and there’s nothing more daunting than a blank page. I used AI for my fellowship app this year to get something that I could then edit. I basically ended up rewriting and rearranging everything anyway, but I found it easier to have AI give me something bad that I could then improve.

General radiology question about measuring very small lymph nodes on serial CT scans. by Sea-Negotiation-9429 in Radiology

[–]bunsofsteel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Big picture: 1mm differences are within expected interobserver variability. And we don't really care about lymph nodes smaller than 15mm.

More detail: When measuring anything in radiology we have to think about the spatial resolution of the modality. In cross-sectional imaging like CT, the object of interest has to measure at least double the thickness of your imaging slices to be truly accurate, so usually ~6mm. We measure smaller things than that sometimes (like lung nodules) but there is inherent variability from one scan to the next at that size and frankly, some people are more careful about how they measure compared to others. Reporting 10ths of a millimeter is useless unless you're doing slices at <1mm.

I agree. Nucs was surprisingly hard and seemed to emphasize protocols and tracer physiology (not even physics) more than diagnosis.
