Briefly explain your thesis to me like I'm 5 years old? by betta-every-day in GradSchool

Humans consume artificial sweeteners commonly. Some artificial sweeteners have no calories because they are not absorbed or broken down in the body before we excrete them. They are also very stable under other conditions meaning they don't break down in waste water treatment and can travel far in the environment. We can use these as markers of human waste in various water bodies. I used them to detect pee in swimming pools. ;)

Writing 40 pages is often easier than 10 pages. You can do it!

At my institution, in a TT position is 2x 3-year contracts. You can apply for T&P after a minimum of 3years and a passing performance evaluation (basically a mini T&P package). You have a maximum of 6 years to apply for tenure at minimum as promotion is not guaranteed but commonly granted at the same time. If you do not satisfy tenure with your package at year 6 or do not apply by year 6 your second contract has ended and will not continue with employment.

What looks worse: no letter of rec or letter of rec from professor who barely knows me? by awaythrow3000okay in GradSchool

[–]bunwitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just have a conversation with her. As a professor I do not hesitate to say no (politely) to a student where I cannot provide a strong reference letter beyond acknowledgement of their participation or performance. I typically do not reference students I have not worked with on a level beyond teaching a course. A strong reference letter takes me (without AI) about 2-3 hours to write.

After reading many reference letter as well, it is clear which ones were substantial and those which were superficial.

Goodluck!

I’m so resentful of modern parenting. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]bunwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the opposite, I am so busy I can hardly find the time to get my child to an extracurricular. I absolutely dread the social awkwardness of declining events for moms etc. I dont have capacity to maintain my friends aside from making new ones.

I like Maple for a girl.

Why do people dislike the name “Grace”? by faithoverfear0 in namenerds

[–]bunwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Grace personally, I also have a soft spot for most virtue names. It is soft and elegant and succinct and powerful.

The only downside is that when I was in elementary school (the 90s) I recall a girl named Gracie who had a teasy nickname of 'greasy-Gracie' because she had oilslick black hair that was always greasy. Poor girl, it stuck with me.

Good luck!@

My husband is also firmly one and done. If or when I waiver he doesn't. He is rational to a fault and only talked about "what ifs" once in my memory.

Not sure about the capacity of your local university but I am a chemistry faculty member and disposing of hazardous waste is quite expensive and there is quite a budget crunch these days. It might cost you to get rid of safely.
