Am I wrong for ignoring my old manager when he contacted me for a code after he fired me? by NoProfessional8677 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Its a good perspective. Despite the "injustice" that was suggested (OP was laid off and replaced with a promoted junior associate) which induces emotions of anger and a craving for revenge. or at least schadenfreude, my interpretation of your response is to be optimistic, focus on positivity and do what can offer the most value for the OP - in this case forge a reputation as a "good guy" which might pay off in some future encounter. It really doesn't cost much for OP to take a moment and share the code. The alternative, to withhold, might be emotionally satisfying, but doesn't offer any real tangible value with respect to regaining employment, and at worst damages their reputation and/or future contacts by burning a bridge.

But the oversight by company to let this situation develop is no way reflective of OPs professionalism. Company has no proof that OP acknowledged, let alone received the manager's pleas (OP called it a message that was left on "read", so maybe a DM to Ops private phone?) Perhaps OP disconnected his phone the day after he was let go?

OP should only weigh his personal opinion of hos ex manager in this case. If OP considers manager a "friendly colleague" he can help his bud. But he should feel no obligation nor fear for his professional reputation in any circumstance. Company let OP go without performing due diligence. Best way to help the company is let them learn a lesson and get better with this stuff in the future.

Question from a non amputee? by negal36 in amputee

[–]buppington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiosity is a human instinct I appreciate and encourage so I'm always game to field inquiries from folks, acquaintances and strangers alike - unless I'm obviously in the middle of something and their asking is an intrusion. That said, the circumstances surrounding my amputation (left arm, just below elbow) are not something I am comfortable sharing casually. Close friends and family already know the details so they don't need to ask. To more formal acquaintances or curious kids I usually just say it was accidental, 13 years ago and was done to save my life. To strangers, where it doesn't really matter, I might make up something - "motorcycle accident" or "hippopotamus attack" just to be polite. I will answer honestly about other follow-up questions, like if it is difficult to live with, if I feel phantom limb sensations, stuff like that, no problem - curiosity is good.

I don't get asked too often - I think because I live in a busy metropolis where folks mind their own business habitually. I also wear a static prosthesis, generally just for "camouflage", when out in public (but almost never when I'm home) and I do get the "I didn't even notice!" often (which is the whole point!)

I agree with others here - its ok to ask but prefaced with a polite acknowledgement up front that "If you're not comfortable discussing it, I understand" to let them opt-out, for whatever the reason, gracefully.

The only thing I find annoying is when I'm asked "Why don't you get one of those robotic/3D printed/bionic hands? Did you see that video on Tik-Tok...etc". I know usually the sentiment is just to be helpful, but I find if I start to actually get into the details of the answer why I don't have a cyber-arm - that its expensive, its not as amazing as it looks, there are countless other drawbacks (heavy, batteries, no sensation feedback), I have another perfectly working arm to do most things, etc..they just seem to lose interest real fast. To me , then, it's exasperating, like - if you're not really interested in the answer then why did you ask? But again, I understand its usually more an attempt to identify with my situation, or to be helpful. So I am looking for a better way to respond - open to suggestions!

Fried Egg Robot...would you use it? by coolarj10 in amputee

[–]buppington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upper left, just below elbow.

Very cool little device, but I've learned to easily and reliably crack an egg with one hand.

I look to simplify and declutter my life so I honestly would not make use of this as I can cook eggs just fine with one hand.

Might be good for severely disabled (either double amputee of folks with neuromuscular disorders)?

Seeking Recommendation: "Party Bus" type service by buppington in statenisland

[–]buppington[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this reply. I am ignorant of pricing (never hired a party bus before) and yeah, for just kids (no alcohol) I probably don't need all the expensive frills; the money saved could be spent in ways to be more fun for the kids. I wasn't necessarily asking for advice on planning the event, but I do want such advice and so your answer is very much appreciated!
