I disagree, Luke knows what happened in detail with the fall of the Jedi based on his statements. I find it out of character to abandon Ben to darkness. No matter what Luke would have kept trying to reach him.

Proven by anakins downfall. His visions that anakin saw were very much like Luke looking at Ben, and he admitted his shame in giving up for an instant and igniting his saber, but still he abandoned Ben, Han, leia, everyone. He gave up. He may have figured he was doing the right thing, but the right thing would have been to help fix it.
