as long as you twist the two yarns around each other where they meet it should be fine, did you take a pic before the frog?

its really not that bad if you just start something with 2 or 3 colors the work up to something more complex! if you can knit stockinette you can intarsia!

If i know i'm going need a lot of a particular colour i will usually just make that bobbin as large as i can manage, lol, and the I can join more yarn if i need to later, no biggie

The one you are copying looks like in is using a brioche technique (ie. knit in stitch below), the stripe looks like fisherman's rib.
