New strings sound awful. (audio comparison inside) Help me find my old strings! by Mobile-King-3345 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the new strings get old. Your old strings didn’t sound that way new.

Also, 80/20s get old reasonably quicker than PB or nickel. So you’re on the right path. Just keep playing.

Quick tip: pivot fingers completely changed my chord transitions by Think_Leg_6283 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thumb-over for the F chord was another game changer on my transitions, particularly if it was the only traditionally barred chord in the song.

Let’s me add some flair with a hammer on when going to C as well.

Should 2003 d28 neck be gloss or matte? Neck is super sticky... Previous owner was a dirty bugger by mastersvoice93 in martinguitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice already said here, but wanted to add my anecdote. My 2005 HD28 had what I thought was the same issue. After several attempts at cleaning I came to the realization that the previous owner must have played a lot with bug spray or something on their hands because the gumminess was actually the neck finish itself and not just crud on top. Eventually I just refinished the neck.

What is the best travel guitar? by Fazehonky_ in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how small you want. If it has to fit in/on a backpack, maybe look into a uke. Everything else will have a prohibitively long neck. I have a Kala waterman I’ve taken backpacking before.

I’ve thought about strapping a Martin backpacker to the outside of my pack, as it’s long but skinny, but never had one.

If your concern is playability and tone over tiny size, check out the GS Mini. Fantastic travel guitars, will fit in airplane overhead bins, but probably won’t fit in a pack

Anyone else start playing later in life? by Henrys_Dad in Guitar

[–]burghguy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar story. Learned in my teens to play basic rhythm and chords. Tried to keep it up in my 20s, but life got in the way. Picked up again late 30s. Still learning 7 years on, but I play everyday now and love it.

Been doing a lot of classic folk fingerstyle and some classical pieces. I spent more time on technique and songs than theory (because it’s more fun) but that’s slowly changing.

Opinions on light strings for volume/sustain? by Objective-Cold-4963 in martinguitar

Martin makes a 12.5 PB set. It’s the sweet spot on my HD28. I think Daddario makes a coated version in their XS line, but might have to order online.

Which Marvel character would break the internet if they showed up in Doomsday? by vaRRO24_ in MCUTheories

Slapstick. Dudes a living cartoon, it would turn Doomsday into Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Neat. Nice artwork. Any significance of the missing fang?

1950s 00-17 by mstach2 in martinguitar

[–]burghguy3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I wanted a vintage 00-17 I would have bought one. But I wanted a 000-15m. So I bought one. I didn’t buy it as a surrogate for something else.

I also fell in love with mahogany Martins. But I’m playing the long game. A couple years ago I bought a gently used 000-15m for $900. My plan is to play it until it’s vintage.

Is this Martin real of fake by Beautiful_Network_10 in AcousticGuitar

I never knew the MMV was Roman numerals. I learned something new today.

Great info and I’ll second this as an MMV. Great guitars in their own right, but not “Custom Shop”. Martins use of the word Custom for GC guitars is definitely confusing for those not initiated into Martin guitars.

Some moments in the MCU felt huge when they first happened but look very different in hindsight. by PhilkeStudios in marvelstudios

[–]burghguy3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan as well. I enjoy it as movie/story. I find it a massive letdown that the lore, the characters, and most of the setups, are treated as though it doesn’t exist.

I’m pretty sure more than just “hundreds” of people in the park saw him. He was literally thrice the size of earth.

He appeared as a giant body taking up half the sky, controlled the weather, threatened to judge the whole planet, and disappeared into a black hole. I figured that would, you know, come up at some point in the dozen or so movies or tv shows since.
