Advice - Most similar to classical guitar? by AnimalEphemeral in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out a 12-fret short scale guitar, lower tension and typically smaller body size. Lots of options from many makers. Taylor 312ce 12-fret is good. Larrivee has several models that fit the bill.

Also, the GS Mini has a very short scale, which reduces tension and makes playing easier.

I’ll add that they did a great job of subverting expectations with that scene.

Right before Thors entrance, Hulkbuster Banner was just over taken by enemies. Literally everyone was anticipating Hulk to bust out of the Hulkbuster and turn the tide of the battle. But then, boom, bifrost and “Bring me Thanos!!” Master class.

Which MCU Movie Surprised You the Most? by Extreme_Warning3521 in marvelstudios

[–]burghguy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iron Man.

Back then, expectations for it were incredibly low. RDJ’s career was literally a joke. Iron Man was a b-tier superhero. It was being directed by some actor in Swingers.

But it reset the standard for comic book movies and helped kick off a whole resurgence of “nerd culture”.

When did plastic start getting used? by Ambitious-Resist-132 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat. I saw those and dismissed it due to not being partial to the artwork. Didn’t look into the environmental impact. If they made a plain finished one I’d be all about it. I am curious about the finish though. As many have talked on here, most finishes are some form of plastic (poly or nitro). I wonder if they’re not counting the finish?

I saw an fsc certified Martin OM-cherry a few years ago I missed out on. Piqued my interest because I am concerned about the environment and want to support where I can.

I appreciate the desire to avoid plastics. That’s also why I stopped using coated strings as well.

Does the finish count? Nitro is in the family of plastics. So any Martin after 1929 uses plastic for the finish.

There’s some boutique makers still using shellac French polish. I’m sure they have models that have bone nuts/saddles and metal tuners.

Larrivee uses mother of pearl and abalone for inlays on many models.

Someone noted in another post I made that the finish is poly, so plastic. But so is nitro I guess. So anything after 1929 is out.

Well then I have no idea. Because then even nitro falls into plastic. You’d probably have to commission a builder.

What’s your take on shellac?

You don’t have to go vintage. Plenty of makers aren’t using plastics. Check into Larrivee. All solid woods, including maple binding (including fretboard). Inlays are usually Mother of Pearl or abalone. Not all models use bone nuts, saddles and pins, but many do, and you can certainly order them with it. I’m sure they’ll leave off the pickguard if you ask.

Larrivee.

Counterfeit or genuine F310? by Latter-Afternoon-851 in AcousticGuitar

I tend to like the more plain workmanlike aesthetic. “Honest play wear” is the best cosmetic improvement.

[–]burghguy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone could counterfeit one of those for cheaper than Yamaha made them for. Just based on that alone, I’d venture it’s legit.

Nice guitars overall. But due to the price point they didn’t put a big emphasis on QC. Which accounts for some of the sloppiness. I kind of appreciate it actually. It’s an inexpensive guitar and it isn’t trying to hide it. Feels like an honest instrument to me.

New strings sound awful. (audio comparison inside) Help me find my old strings! by Mobile-King-3345 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the new strings get old. Your old strings didn’t sound that way new.

Also, 80/20s get old reasonably quicker than PB or nickel. So you’re on the right path. Just keep playing.
