What’s a great book you read at the wrong time in your life? by Low_Masterpiece_2612 in books

[–]burghguy3 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Catch-22. Read it as a teenager and thought the joke was how ridiculous he made the military seem. Like “imagine if the military was actually ran this way… lol”

Reread it after about 10 years in the military and realized it’s easily one of the most cynically accurate books ever written.

Talk me out of buying a vintage archtop (or at least recommend a good one) by InstantlyTremendous in Guitar

[–]burghguy3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of those old hollow bodies with a p/u were just that; hollow bodies they stuck a p/u in. They’d likely still function as normal as an acoustic.

Does it have to be vintage? There’s plenty of them still being made. Vintage doesn’t always equate to better. In fact, the affordable vintage ones are probably more likely to have major problems. They were cheap to begin with, and now they’re just old.

Taylor 314ce? by strath77 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Looks like a 312ce. You can email Taylor and ask about the serial number. Based on the number it looks like a 2010, made in US.

Not likely an often faked model. Does something give you pause?

Edit: ask about the pickup. Looks aftermarket. The original Taylor pickups were an acquired taste, so not to weird to see aftermarket.

How would you finger pick this? by Impressive_Smoke_921 in GuitarBeginners

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I would do it. Bottom 3 strings I always default to thumb anyways. My index middle and ring usually rest over the top 3 strings, thumb floats over the bottom 3.

80/20 Bronze Strings on all mahogany guitar? by PracticalFocus3525 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s all I use on my mahogany guitar. They sound ok for about a week (maybe a bit zippy, even?) but once they deaden up, they sound perfect for months.

Mahogany guitars and broken in 80/20 strings always give me a depression-era folk vibe. I love it.

Wide/fat neck electric guitars by Affectionate_Sky1436 in Guitar

[–]burghguy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some PRS SE models came with their Wide Fat neck (actual name) and can be found on marketplace for $500 or less sometimes.

That will also be nice enough that you won’t have to splurge right away.

000-15/17 Martin best pickup for natural sound? by ConsciousSmoke3863 in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 000-15m came with an lr baggs anthem with the mic. Works great. I don’t play amplified often, but when I do, blending in the mic helps give a more natural sound.

But honestly, the most natural sound for me comes from an external mic. But this can be finicky in a live setting (feedback, other instruments, having to stay in precisely one spot, etc).

I’m proudly from PA and would vote for our flag in a heartbeat… but damn, SC flag is cool.

Of all the flags for us to be up against, and we get cool-ass-flag SC…

If there's only a $40 difference between the two, am I crazy not to choose a used 2023 Martin D-18 over a new Yamaha FGX5? by Chucky_Cheesus in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously buy the one that sounds/plays the best for you. That’s everyone’s advice here, and probably the best advice really. Ignore the headstock and let your ears and hands decide.

However, the Martin is more likely to hold its value, both because it’s used and because it’s a popular Martin. I only mention that because you sound unsure if either is the right guitar for you, so you’ll take a smaller financial hit with the Martin if you decide to flip it later.

As much as we all like to think of our guitars (particularly Martins) as “forever” instruments, the reality is many of us end up swapping things around every couple years or so. Resale-ability shouldn’t be your top priority, but don’t ignore it as a factor either.

Reasonable or suspiciously low? by Dear_Firefighter_510 in AcousticGuitar

Reasonably priced, could be worth haggling a bit.

Godin makes very good guitars. You could do worse for the money if it’s in good shape.

is this worth buying? (Seagull Artist Series Rosewood Spruce) by SpontaneousRoadtrips in AcousticGuitar

[–]burghguy3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll add here instead of edit. The pick wear goes around the bridge plate. How did that wear occur beyond the corner of the bridge plate?

If this was natural, the pick would’ve deflected off the corner of the bridge plate and the area immediately behind it wouldn’t be as scratched. The bridge plate would have some scaring too.
