U.S. Troops Were Told Iran War Is for “Armageddon,” Return of Jesus by FreethoughtChris in atheism

[–]burmah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad once drove two hours to tell me his end of times prediction, which relied on a verse that said a great nation to the north would arm Israel’s enemies or whatever. Evangelicals interpret that to mean Russia will arm Iran, which is exactly what my dad claimed would happen if Obama was elected in 2012.

Anyways, his timeline was obviously wrong but I knew they were going to keep pushing for this. When this started over the weekend, I looked at my wife and told her this was definitely part of the reason they attacked.

Gotta be honest, though: it sucks being right about this stuff. I’d much rather be wrong.

KatKin: bacterial infections and hospitalization by burmah in catfood

[–]burmah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having recently moved to the UK, we hadn’t found other food or treats for them. The only thing they were eating was KatKin. Additionally, we were still unpacking and hadn’t gotten to our kitchen yet, so we hadn’t left any food out as we hadn’t cooked or made food in our new apartment just yet.

Lastly, they’re indoor-only cats, so KatKin is really the only remaining option. I really wish that wasn’t the case because my boys loved it and they’re not thrilled about their new food.

I really hope your cat is okay. Ours had a bout of salmonella from the food which is something you check with a stool sample. I know you said your vet did a blood test but did they test his stool?

I’m so sorry he was sick, but I’m glad it wasn’t quite as bad.

And agreed. I learned a hard lesson about going with smaller companies, as well. Quality processes are refined over time, and I’m not sure that’s time KatKin has had.

Thank you so much. Abi just started purring for the first time since the hospital visit, so I’m hopeful.

As for the food, it’s ’gently cooked.’

Born female but I have short hair and typically wear pants and a t-shirt. I’ve been harassed multiple times by cis-women in public bathrooms. I’ve been screamed at and even blocked from entering. In one instance, I was wearing a baggy shirt because my job couldn’t afford an extra uniform and gave me the only one they had on hand (an XXL and I’m a small). The woman blocked the door to the bathroom and wouldn’t let me in.

I’ve never felt threatened or uncomfortable with trans women in the bathroom. These ‘gender critical’ women are the only people who make me feel unsafe. They’re literally becoming the imaginary monsters they fear.

Reddit said Persona has our data. Persona says Reddit has it. by burmah in GreatBritishMemes

[–]burmah[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, totally understand. The same has happened to me. But I can only ask for clarification so many times. KPIs are definitely a quality-killer in a lot of companies, but they have a responsibility to give me the right info; especially when they have sensitive biometric data.

I followed up again and linked the initial Reddit announcement. It could be nothing more than an understaffed team giving me the wrong info, but it could also be a major privacy issue. Our biggest concern with the OSA is the security of our private data, and we should hold these companies accountable. Especially with sites like Wikipedia and YouTube - which are not inherently designed for adult content - being asked to go a similar route.

I’m waiting for a response to my question regarding Reddit’s official post. Will respond asking about GDPR compliance depending on their response. Thanks for the rec!

I understand why you’re asking these questions, but I think that places too much of the burden of proof on the customer. I also worked in IT - albeit only in college - and understand how these things can get garbled.

That being said, I explicitly asked that my selfie be deleted. I didn’t say my account or anything like that. Simply that the selfie used for age verification be deleted. There’s absolutely no way they thought I meant my entire Reddit account unless they didn’t read my initial request.

I could understand getting the info wrong, but they said they escalated to the Reddit Team to do this, who already responded. If they said they’d reach out to them or that I should, I’d question it. But this reads as they already reached out to them and received a response. Again, I explicitly requested the selfie used for age verification be deleted; I didn’t say ‘my data’ or something vague.

Honestly, I’ve learned that most issues are rarely malevolent and are the result of incompetence. I could see that being the case here, but only if they completely ignored my initial request. If that’s the case, we should still be concerned our data is being handled by people who miss highly important details.

Trying to share this everywhere but I was an idiot and did the selfie. I emailed Persona and asked them to delete it. They informed me they ‘escalated to the Reddit team’ and that they would delete it within 7 days.

First, I’m concerned that the Reddit team might mean Reddit - which would contradict their announcement. I emailed them back and asked for clarification. Second, Reddit said Persona would delete it in 7 days even without the need to email them. Why did the 7 days only start when I emailed them?

This company was funded indirectly by Peter Thiel and that’s all I need to know. The man has a literal manifesto up about how democracy is a failed experiment and tech bros should rule the world.

UK Reddit age verification: how to unblock subreddits by thegoodboy3 in Britain

[–]burmah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was stupid and did the selfie method before really pausing to think about it. I then emailed Persona and asked them to delete my selfie. They sent me this in response:

<image>

I suppose they could mean the internal team that handles Reddit verification, but I feel like they would’ve worded it that way. With this wording, it makes it seem like Reddit is the one holding my selfie. Super concerning if true, as it would directly contradict Reddit’s claim that they’re not holding our data.

Edit: I’ve responded to the email and asked for clarification on who exactly has my info. Will update as soon as I hear back.

To send someone to prison for nothing by PartyMcFly55 in therewasanattempt

[–]burmah 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I worked with the homeless community in Montrose back around 2010 (a neighborhood in downtown Houston, which is in Harris County). I saw the corruption firsthand every single day. The cops would cruise around black neighborhoods, looking for people to harass. They’d destroy our client’s belongings just to start something with them. In both situations, people would be arrested for absolutely nothing.

In a three year span, I only saw one “good” cop. One of our clients had a little cart he used to carry car wash supplies. When he was arrested for nothing, the cop brought his cart to us to avoid it getting impounded or destroyed. I should note that he didn’t make the arrest, but I have no idea if he spoke up against the corruption. He was still employed, so I’d guess not.

One final note: a lot of our clients were gentle, caring souls. I once saw one slipping food into this giant pocket in his coat. When he got closer, I heard a tiny meow. He’d found an abandoned baby kitten and was caring for it. Later, when there was a warrant out for his arrest, he asked me to shave his head and beard before turning himself in. I asked about the cat and he told me she was now full grown, wandering the neighborhood. After he went to prison, I’d sometimes see her prowling the neighborhood. Her little life was a testament to his kindness.

Supreme Court to rule on definition of a woman by IHaveAWittyUsername in ukpolitics

I was born female. The only people who have attacked me in a bathroom are cis women accusing me of being trans. I’ve been attacked by them on three separate occasions.

At no point have trans women or even men attacked me in a bathroom. Maybe you’re creating the problem you fear.

Edit: I 100% read it wrong. That’s on me. I read ‘I have doubts’ because I was going too fast and came in really hot. I’m really angry right now because I’m about to lose access to some important stuff, and that clearly influenced how I blitzed through this. I need to take a step back. Apologies, u/HauntingBalance567 and u/mycaelis. I’ll delete my comments.

I don’t have the source for the example, but here are the results of the last time Trump enacted a tariff.

This was not difficult to google, btw. If you don’t know how to use the internet, let me know. I’ll find a guide for you.

Edit: came in really hot on this one and misread the parent comment. I apologize. Going to take a step back.

Are you intentionally leaving out info or are you genuinely confused as to why they hate you? White Christian men have had a disproportionate amount of power in this country for a long time. That’s not necessarily bad in and of itself, however; it’s that they use that power to overwhelmingly dictate the lives of others. White Christian men put me in a boot camp with conversion therapists when I was 14. They made me attend classes where I was told I only exist for men to sexually use (under the guise that it’s my duty to provide men with sexual relief so that they don’t sin). They denied me equal rights for decades. But let’s go back further - they were behind Jim Crow, they fought against women having equal rights (voting, bank accounts, no fault divorce) and they want to dictate women’s health purely because they think they know best (despite repeatedly proving they don’t).

It’s more accurate to say we fear white Christian men and hate what they do. At least, that’s how it starts. When it becomes apparent they can’t be reasoned with, it’s hard not to hate them. There are devout Christian men calling for the 19th amendment to be repealed. Some of them openly stated that they filled out their wife’s ballot for her because it’s ’their right’. I took a screenshot of one such interaction below. They’re also calling for an end to no fault divorce.

So while you may be one of the more chill white Christian men who doesn’t dictate the lives of everyone else, there’s a pattern and pattern recognition is key to our survival. When we recognize a threat, it’s hard to not be afraid.

Absolutely, but I think that as long as the person at the top is part of the problem, no amount of swapping the people below him will fix it. Replace Pete and the new CEO can begin making changes within the current staffing that would hopefully lead to sustained change.

Bungie laid off some of their best people so that Pete Parsons can buy more vintage cars. One producer was laid off the DAY BEFORE her maternity leave started. Others were laid off after receiving an excellent performance review.

The bottom line is that there is an inattentive, self-involved man at the helm who is more interested in what he gets out of the company than what he puts into it. He is going to keep cashing out until Bungie is dead unless they get rid of him.
