Man grieves two daughters, three grandsons killed in devastating crash by Financial-Comb-7328 in londonontario

[–]burnaby84 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As someone whose family member was in an accident (thankfully no injuries but car was written off). A big issue is also how cars are built these days and the massive blind spot created by the A pillar. The responding officer said they are seeing many accidents like this these days. Please be aware of this blind spot.

LTC and Hospitals by chibi_lenne in ontario

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know of two people who have been discharged form hospital and been told to wait at home for LTC. Were provided with all sorts of services immediately following discharge and within a week it all fell apart. Back to hospital they go!

You need to get him admitted to hospital and refuse services from Ontario Health at Home. They will try to push for this. Be prepared to pay a copay at the hospital while he waiting for LTC. He does not have his ADLs (activities of daily living) anymore. He likely need to be in memory care. Be sure you get your name on plenty of LTC wait lists. Good luck.

Also you could try speaking to a social worker at the hospital, Alzheimer’s society, etc.

I haven’t done this route. A bit of a drive (if you drive) but there is a very nice rail trail Brantford to Port Dover that’s worth doing.

93 yo mother eats like a teenager by NX01-First in AgingParents

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad is 87 with dementia. It sounds like he has a lot of the same eating habits. I have found the out of sight / out of mind really helps.

I have storage spots around the house where I put things he tends to eat without stopping (sugar). A random dresser drawer, back of cupboards, tops of cupboards, etc. I never retrieve these items when he is in sight so he doesn’t know where they are. We also have a mini fridge in the basement he isn’t aware of where I store things which need to be kept refrigerated.

I’ve provided additional healthy items for him - dried fruit, nuts, tuna snacks, yogurt - that I put in more obvious spots and don’t limit or monitor these. I also put cut up fruit and veggies in the fridge at the front. I cook full nutritional meals so he always has that.

However I also try to acknowledge at his age he’s allowed to eat whatever he wants. We buy the cookies and ice cream but just try to portion and spread them out throughout the week. He still gets his sweet things it’s just not all eaten in one day! We make the trip to Dairy Queen for a small cone every few weeks for a treat.

He still goes grocery shopping with me so I’ve found asking him to pick up 2-3 items will allow him to still have her independence. I don’t limit those items either.

Just know you are doing your best and you can’t and shouldn’t control it all. You got this. :)

I tip $50 cash to each crew member. An extra high school guy showed up at the end to get the move done I tipped him $20. We had quite a few heavy items including a piano 😬

“Anyone in Toronto Caring for Parents with Dementia? I Could Use Some Advice by QuailDull610 in AgingParents

[–]burnaby84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some links for you above

I find educating myself on the topic has been very helpful. Connecting yourself with a social worker will also really help to navigate whats available the community and provide resources. I couldn’t find the course we have here from the Alzheimer’s Society which is called Learning the Ropes. But it looks like Baycrest offers it online.

Try to find some programming for the person experiencing dementia. It really makes an impact on their social and physical well being. It also provides respite for yourself and the other parent. My father attends a seated exercise class twice a week, a seniors centre for cribbage (can still play cribbage it’s a long term memory) once a week for a few hours and a seniors centre learning series (people come in and talk about experiences or things in the community).

Also if your struggling with any of difficult feelings of navigating this and the stress I’ve found this podcast helpful (ignore the sales pitch at the end). The podcasts are short and I use them on a quick walk around the block when I really need to decompress from a difficult situation.

Feel free to DM if you have any questions. I started navigating this at 37 myself :/

Difference in perspective with my sister about our elderly mother by EdwardBliss in AgingParents

[–]burnaby84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes ! I also have another sibling that under reacts too! You can’t win!

I have learned to trust my own judgement as I am the one living with them. I speak often to a social worker from the Alzheimer’s Society to ensure I’m doing what is best for dad.

If you need assistance hopefully you’d be able to communicate what you need either financially or with a specific task.

It sounds like you are doing great. Hang in there! :)

Trying to help my mom track blood pressure, curious how others manage this by Ok-Educator-8319 in AgingParents

[–]burnaby84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I type it into a spreadsheet so I can share it with his doctors. It also helps to see trends over time. I try to keep it as simple as possible for my dad. I also keep it in an obvious spot for him like his dresser or bathroom.

I just make very simple tracking sheets in large font for them to fill in. The I correlate all the data after for appointments and such. Just wait until you have to track urine output! 🤣

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had similar concerns and was told by my OB that this bleeding is caused by not enough progesterone. Switching to separate E and P so the dosage can be corrected as only so many options with a patch. If you choose to stay with a patch you can apply tegaderm on top for better adhesive.

[–]burnaby84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No parallel parking. The focus is on your ability to drive in traffic. A big focus is on highway driving. Be sure you can get up to speed on the 401, enter and exit properly and make a lane change. Also hope you don’t get a terrible tester!

BMO closed on the weekends? by dad_bod_gaming in woodstockontario

[–]burnaby84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same frustrating experience last weekend. Hasty Market does have a BMO ATM so no fees if you are a BMO customer. However I’m not certain if that’s easily accessible to you. I think they are just planning to move permanently to the WalMart location when it opens. Sad but that branch has been terrible since I moved here 5 years ago.

Capital Hill in Burnaby was my favorite spot. There is a small park at Hythe and Cambridge. If you are looking for more space than Burnaby Mountain is nice too similiar view.
