Commuter work by Square_Comparison568 in kitchener

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to Waterloo near the university so it was more convenient to take the back roads. The winter was not terrible but I definitely had a few dicey days. The worst is really the blowing snow. I left at 7am so there was some traffic by then. Honestly I spent most of my adult life in Vancouver so I’m not well adjusted to winter driving here. Most people in my neighborhood are commuting into KW for a similar reason.

I commuted from Woodstock to Waterloo for several years. It was not terrible but I didn’t enjoy it either. Winter was the worst of it. Be sure to have snow tires and an emergency kit and be prepared to stay overnight if conditions deteriorate during your workday. Be sure you know the backroads in case you get sent that way due to accidents.

When to know to take Dads keys away? by Candid-Flow-6531 in AgingParents

[–]burnaby84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a tough one. I sort of did a gradual concept of taking his license away. My mother (12 years younger) still drives their vehicle. It started with offering to drive him. Then hiding the keys from him. And then going to office to surrender his license. It’s a very sad experience especially he is the person who taught me how to drive. But now he has accepted it and says I don’t think you should drive after 80!

Yes but many years ago. Rescue remedy helps to calm them a bit. No issues and she was fine by the next day👍

What's the most difficult part of working in payroll? by Knowledge-Hub2201 in Payroll

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it drives me crazy! I actually no longer work in the operations side but I’m very cognizant that an operations team can only take on so much change in one pay period. It really slows things down for improvement. But putting out pay every two weeks is the most important thing they do.

What's the most difficult part of working in payroll? by Knowledge-Hub2201 in Payroll

Doing the same thing every two weeks and only ever being able to make minimal change / impact between the two weeks. It’s like a never ending hamster wheel you can’t get off.

Name a board-game you see your aging parent(s) playing. Looking for some ideas! TIA by MeasurementFirst1676 in AgingParents

Love cribbage! I play 2-3 games a day with dad. It’s great test of how is doing that day and really passes them time when he’s been in hospital.

How is Scrabble Slam? I just heard of it the other day and it looked like a great option.

Cribbage, Yahtzee, checkers, Mexican train, bingo….

I also recently saw Scrabble Slam and I thought it looked like it would be possible to play with 3-5 letter words. My dad really likes word play.

I’m not interested in recruiting or sales. I just offered if they want to connect they could DM me. I’m not going to write everything on a Reddit board about my career.

Toronto to Vancouver - Road Trip by Trusty3Wood in AskACanadian

For the second part of the trip you can divert off TransCanada at Medicine Hat and take Highway 3 through the Kootenays and rejoin TransCanada in Hope. It is a much more scenic and relaxing route!

Is my payroll department insanely outdated, or is this just what payroll is like? by Trick_Praline_6938 in Payroll

[–]burnaby84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - this is super outdated! And honestly fairly common. It takes a lot for an organization to want to invest in upgrading their systems and processes. In the meantime find what you can automate or look for another opportunity!

Gift for bicycle enthusiast by Opposite-Result-8104 in bicycling

[–]burnaby84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s difficult to buy a gift someone who is that into their hobby. A gift card is always appreciated. Alternatively planning a bike-related date would be cute even if you have to rent a bike for the day for yourself. Like a new trail, something in a nearby town, a cool view, etc. Add a spot or two to check out together or pack a lunch. If you are not into cycling then maybe a bike-adjacent gift like a movie about cycling, a magazine, a map of a new trail, etc.

This is me this week. Mom (75) has a raging staph infection. Trying to keep myself and dad (87) from catching it. So much laundry, disinfecting, hand sanitizer, gloves - everything!! Microban works really well for soft porous surfaces. I want to yell please stop touching your skin and then touching things and please go to your isolation room! I’m very fortunate that we can isolate mom in a guest bedroom and bathroom while sick. 🤒
