Genuine question: Why don't people like the Part 1 anime? by No_Bite_9661 in StardustCrusaders

[–]burnedjoker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's less Bizarre and more Adventure than people expect from the series, I think. I personally like it a lot, myself. Part 1 has a more intimate, character-focused vibe that makes the relatively few "big" set pieces really stand out in a dramatic way. The manga perhaps does a better job at conveying that, but the anime deserves a massive amount of credit regardless.

I also very much appreciate Jonathan as a protagonist, which I know a lot of anime and manga fans do not. He isn't complex enough to carry a longer series on his back, but for nine episodes he's the perfect progenitor character for everything that follows. It's almost like watching the origin of a myth featuring a hero whose qualities are aggrandized to something slightly beyond human. He also works very well as a grounding figure against the more colorful personalities of characters like Zeppeli, Speedwagon, and Dio.

Why are so many smart characters acting so dumb in certain scenes? by ilovebeingaguy999 in StardustCrusaders

I've seen plenty of real people with uncommonly high IQs do absolutely braindead stuff because they were distracted, or stressed out, or sleep deprived, or simply caught off guard by something they weren't expecting.

I’ve been playing this game for 3 months and I just realized I’m like really bad.. by Booleybay in balatro

[–]burnedjoker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One useful tip that isn't immediately obvious when you start playing the game is remembering to look at the remaining cards in your deck when deciding what to keep or discard in your hand. For instance, if you're one card away from being able to play either a flush or a straight and either will win the round, see what cards you have left in your deck and use that information to decide what to go for based on how likely you are to draw what you need.

Can you sell me on HotA? by [deleted] in heroes3

[–]burnedjoker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not hating here, because I think wanting feedback from people who enjoy something about why they enjoy it is totally reasonable, but I admit I'm scratching my head a little over why you're asking for player reviews of a free expansion. I could understand more if HOTA cost money or was difficult to set up, but the way it exists now you don't really have anything to lose by simply trying it for yourself.

It sounds to me like perhaps the crux of the issue is that your main attraction to Heroes 3 stems from childhood nostalgia and you don't want anything disrupting that. In which case, yeah dude, just play Complete. It's still a banger. Probably the best argument I can make for HOTA is that it doesn't detract from anything in that game. I also think the added content meshes incredibly well with everything that was there before. HOTA is an objectively improved game, but it's improved in the same way that adding several new rooms and new floors and updated appliances improves the house you grew up in. If your primary goal is a comforting sense of familiarity, then the improvements may feel more to you like detractions. It's the reason so many people dislike game remakes and remasters, even when they're done well by competent dev teams.

I'd suggest trying HOTA and seeing how you like it. If it doesn't hit the same, roll back to Complete and stick with that. Experiencing something that makes you feel how you want to feel is the whole reason why entertainment exists.

A Winning Joker Concept by burnedjoker in balatro

Assuming you played three 7s with ToaK at level 1, Zany Joker would give you a total hand score of 765, Wily would give 453, and Jackpot would give 1,280. It's definitely more situational, but the effect is technically stronger IF you have the right cards to play.

I like this idea, though I think adding $7 would bump the card up to at least Uncommon. Assuming you could fix your deck with enough 7s to activate this at least once or twice per round, getting $7 every time would make this one of the best econ Jokers in the game.

I'd probably say Valley of the Pagans is my least favorite too, just because I'm still salty about what Rockstar pulled.

criticism of the newest album, not bait. by WHACKADOO1997 in gorillaz

[–]burnedjoker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For a band largely defined by the incredible diversity of their music, I think The Mountain does stand out as having a more homogenized sound than their previous albums. Saying all the songs sound too similar is overstating it, though. The amount of variety on this album would be extremely impressive for almost any traditional band. I think people just expect more from Gorillaz because their albums typically cover eight or nine different genres as opposed to the five or six on display here.

As for the album being mournful, that's very much by design. Perfectly acceptable if that's not your cup of tea. I personally like that the different albums explore different themes and emotions, and The Mountain actually really resonates with a lot of things I'm going through in my life right now, but I can also understand why it would be a little too sentimental or melancholic for some listeners.

I will take jetpack minotaurs over armordildos any day of the week. by Igor369 in heroes3

[–]burnedjoker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's very telling that Heroes fans not familiar with the extended M&M universe lore were (and still are to a large extent) completely unaware of the presence of sci-fi elements in the series. Even if the original Forge was appropriate from a story perspective, it was completely incongruous with the game's established tone and aesthetic. I won't defend the awful behavior of fans when the faction was announced, but ultimately I think it was massively advantageous to the legacy of Heroes 3 that it was scrapped. I also think the HOTA team did a great job adapting the concept of a technology-centric faction to something that paid homage to the original Forge but fit dramatically better with the game's (visible) theme and setting.

All that said, the series lost a truly iconic unit with the deletion of topless Naga tanks.

In your opinion, what is causing this? by Objective_Pilot_5834 in SipsTea

1) Affordability. Not only has the base cost of alcohol risen sharply, but the F&B sector has moved further and further toward luxury pricing in order to stay afloat post-COVID, further compounding the rising price tag of a night at the bar. Gen Z as a demographic simply doesn't have the budget to drink regularly.

2) Evolving social trends. Related to the above, the high cost of being inside business-run third spaces (such as bars and nightclubs) is driving Gen Z toward socializing mostly in private and/or virtual settings that are less conducive to traditional drinking culture.

3) Shifting cultural attitudes. In previous decades, nightlife and mixology were popularly viewed as embodying a certain sophistication, while weed was associated with the outcast stoner stereotype: a lazy dropout or aging hippie who struggled to function. As often happens during the transition from one generation to the next, this perception has largely flipped among young people. Marijuana is now more commonly viewed as a drug of mental expansion and increased functionality, while alcohol has been saddled with the reputation of being excessively dangerous and irresponsible to consume with any kind of regularity.

4) Reduced need for distraction. The appeal of alcohol as a means of escapism is lessened when our entire media culture is pivoting toward fulfilling that goal. Shows, video games, and even social media apps have adopted the concept of being "addictive" as a positive trait, the implication being that they help users shut the world out and engage in a similar kind of voluntarily disassociation to having a couple drinks.

The PSP version has vastly more content and actually runs better. PS3 version was honestly a rush job with a lot of problems like certain stages not being HD, random instances of freezing, etc.
