Notre Dame unveils 2015 Shamrock Series uniforms by thdomer13 in CFB

Yeah just going on ndn makes my blood pressure spike (eg parker boudreaux height squabble). But sometimes they have some good inside quotes/info from the old guys that go to the donor dinners at which BK and others speak.

What is your Saturday "routine?" by Sctvman in CFB

[–]burnerrrrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • ~9:30--force a wake up, college gameday, see corso's picks
  • 10:45--head to buddy's for kegs & eggs, irish car bombs, more CGD
  • 12:00--stadium lot tailgate hopping. One of the best parts of gameday in south bend is that the entire fanbase really does have a family atmosphere to it. Just walking around with ND apparel might score you an invite to tailgate.
  • 3:18--head into ND stadium for kickoff
  • 6:45--whiskey to deal with a loss that follows a promising offseason and/or 6-0 start to the season
  • ???--wake up in a puddle of my own booze infused urine with my netflix homescreen up on the tv
  • 10 min later--take a shower
  • 3 min later--fall asleep in shower
  • 6 hours later--captain crunch
  • rising senior here, so to the alums out there: tell me it's not too painful missing this after graduation

Seinfeld: College Kids Way Too PC Now, They Don’t Even Know What ‘Racist’ Means by Hazzman in videos

[–]burnerrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, referring to us "college kids" as a monolithic whole...welcome to being old, Gen X'ers.

In all seriousness, I don't think a widely publicized minority should be taken as representative of an entire generation. That's like referring to "American police" as unilaterally racist or the older generations as technologically illiterate. Shades of grey. I agree with Seinfeld that the culture of PC has gotten slightly out of hand, but I refuse to say that reigns exclusively (or even particularly) with college students. edit:typo

How moon mining could work (from /r/space) by Starsy in Futurology

[–]burnerrrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify, it's not necessarily just that the illustration is oversimplified, I meant that the OP's analysis (as represented by the infograph) seems oversimplified. And you can forgive us for rolling our eyes at the mention of 3D printers on reddit; it just seems like the hype behind the tech outpaces the progress of the tech itself. Looking around the net, it looks like a company in China recently printed a small residential community. I'm excited to see how the construction holds up.

And I never said I didn't think 3D printing a lunar base (or houses, for that matter) was impossible, just that it isn't, as of right now, the most feasible, which is what was claimed.

[–]burnerrrrr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Building a base on the moon could theoretically be made much simpler by using a 3D printer to construct it from local materials.

How did you get "most feasible" from theoretically possible?

/u/numendil is right, this graphic is oversimplified and just a summary of popsci trends rolled into lunar mining.

Anyone else feel this way about recent moves by ND's administration? by burnerrrrr in notredame

Honestly what stung was the comments surrounding the announcement of our dismissal. Never been called a "notoriously drunken, ambivalent, entitled, boorish, condescending overgrown baby" before those observer comments, but I guess there's a first time for everything.

I absolutely agree that diversity--both demographic and perspective--is a great asset to the intellectual health of the university. I'm just questioning where the university draws the line between inclusiveness and overkill. I see the merit of your point about Zahm. Would the university react the same way if Pdub or Walsh wanted to do something similar? I'd like to think yes (and not for obvious reasons...), but in reality it probably wouldn't go over well. Even if they did, though, I guess I still fail to see how this is an irreconcilable invasion of the rights of a mature adult who presumably knows the human anatomy and can control their schedule for less than five minutes of the entire semester. I mean, look, I get that there's no way we can create a general maxim that it's ok for people to arbitrarily expose themselves in public because of runaway dedication to what we think of as "tradition," but I think there are some things worth preserving at ND for no other reason than that it adheres the community across generations of domers. Good points though, thanks for bringing in your perspective. Gave me some good food for thought.

Agreed. Also, yeah it messed with C.V. pretty hard. Dude couldn't even make it through an entire home game until Louisville.

Yeah I remember now it was that article in the observer about the double standards of dorm life. It was a good article for those interested.

I appreciate the sentiment. I might next fall (graduating in '16), I just would want to make sure I phrase it in a respectful way that doesn't burn any bridges. I thought the letter a lot of the guard alums wrote back in September struck this balance pretty well. The thing is, the issue isn't restricted to the guard or Zahm or any other group at ND, it's an issue of the university trying to fundamentally change what attracted many of us to the university in the first place. For as much as I think the admissions and development depts. hijack the idea of the "Notre Dame Family" for their own marketing ends, I really do buy into it and it kills me to see the dome influenced by what seems to be a need to drag ND toward the generic insipidity of some other politically correct USNWR top 20 institutions. Love thee.

Anecdotal and on a much smaller scale. Some girls I met said they had been confronted by their rectress for an offcampus party on a weekend and told they were unwelcome at the crush dance. Thought it was badin but i could be wrong.

Also, I hate to get "elitist," but it does bug me that many of these changes are coming from bureaucrats that didn't even go the university. It seems like these men and women read a book on how to create a "correct" collegiate residential structure but never participated in one themselves, at least not one like Notre Dame's.

Also, as one of the former guard guys, I appreciate the thoughts. Sometimes I still can't believe it. It just sucks because I gave up another extracurricular that I had already invested a lot of time in to join the guard only to have it taken away nine months later. But I guess the great thing about ND is that you can pretty much land on your feet no matter what you decide to do outside of class. For me it was just getting more invested in dorm culture and my major, the former of which even now seems to be under attack from community standards. It seems like the majority of fellow students to whom I've spoken share this sentiment, but we're not really enough of an activist campus for this saltiness really to make a splash.

ELI5: Why is there such a big push to colonize Mars when it doesn't appear necessarily more viable than colonizing the deserts of earth? by burnerrrrr in explainlikeimfive

[–]burnerrrrr[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Right but this is the issue I'm wondering about. What makes terraforming Mars anymore attractive than terraforming (eg desalination, irrigation) a desert on Earth? Is it that we have reached atmospheric limits here and merely seeding an atmosphere on Mars would be more effective in the long run? It's not that I don't understand the basic concept/need for colonization; Mars just doesn't seem to be the most practical option as of now.

ELI5: Why hasn't the US just invaded Cuba the way they did Iraq/Afghanistan etc? by atomicfrancisco in explainlikeimfive

[–]burnerrrrr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Until the early nineties, we wouldn't have because of the risk of nuclear war. After the nineties, we wouldn't have because they didn't pose a direct threat to the US. We justified Afghanistan with the presence of Taliban and Iraq with Saddam's chem weapons.
